Chapter 3 Forgiveness
Lisa, do you know? Actually, the hospital had already found a kidney donor before this, but I refused. You've caused me so much pain, and I want you to taste the agony of living death."
Kevin left triumphantly, leaving me stunned in my tracks.
Perhaps to Kevin, it was just a fair trade of a kidney for a human life, but only I knew it was a desperate gamble of life for life.
Almost the next day, I dialed Kevin's number.
I agreed to his demand, but only if I could see Logan one last time.
With a black cloth over my head, I was brought to the agreed location. Seeing the familiar figure before me, my eyes welled up with tears.
I carefully held the dying Logan in my arms.
"Don't be afraid, Logan. We'll get out of here soon... I'll rescue you soon."
Kevin was standing right in front of me at that moment. He should have been an indifferent bystander, but there was a flicker of anger in his eyes that I couldn't comprehend.
As if stimulated by our heartwarming scene, he suddenly mocked,
"Whether you can get out depends on whether the surgery succeeds. What if you're unlucky and die on the operating table... That would be too unfortunate."
Actually, Kevin was right. There was a good chance I would die on the operating table, but not because of any accident.
Linda took me for the preoperative examination, monitoring me the whole time as if afraid I might escape.
Later, annoyed by her constant watching, I said sarcastically,
"Logan is still in your hands. Do you really think I can escape?"
But Linda's reaction was unexpectedly abnormal, with an uncontrollable air of triumph.
"I'm just curious how someone who's about to die can be so calm."
I lazily gave her a white-eyed look, a bitter smile rising in my heart. Yeah, I was about to die.
The surgery was long and painful, but my suffering was doubled.
Because Kevin specifically instructed the doctor not to give me anesthesia. He wanted me to personally taste the agony of living death.
I was fully awake throughout the surgery, calmly welcoming the countdown to my death.
Finally, when the doctor made the last cut, I couldn't hold on anymore, and a mouthful of blood spilled from the corner of my mouth.
In a daze, I seemed to hear Kevin talking to the doctor.
"Mr. Kevin, Miss Linda's kidney transplant surgery was successful, but the other one... is dying. Before this surgery, she had already undergone a kidney transplant. Now she has no kidneys left, and she won't survive."
Kevin's reaction was as expected. He even rushed into the operating room despite the doctor's protests.
"Lisa, you're about to die. Do you know how happy I am? That pest who's been haunting me for so many years is finally going to die."
But as he laughed, Kevin suddenly began screaming wildly, rushing towards me like a madman.
"No... Lisa, you caused me so much pain. How can you die? I won't let you die. If you have to die, it has to be by my hand."
The doctor instinctively avoided such a madman.
Later, I don't know how long it took, but Kevin's state calmed down again.
"You knew you'd die without two kidneys, but you still gave them away. It's your own fault."
At this moment, I could hardly speak.
I stared at him blankly for a long time, then mustered my last breath to tell the truth.
"But, Kevin, my other kidney was for you."
A bitter smile crossed my face as tears fell from the corners of my eyes.
After I died, my soul didn't dissipate immediately. Instead, it hovered in the air not far from Kevin.
This time, I really granted Kevin's wish, but there was not the slightest sense of satisfaction on the man's face after taking his revenge.
He cried, the first time in his life he had cried for me, sobbing uncontrollably, demanding that I clarify everything.
But no matter how he shook my body, I couldn't give him any response.
Later, Kevin fainted in the operating room and Linda took him to the emergency room.
But after hearing from the nurses that the man had regained consciousness, she didn't rush in. Instead, she turned to the next room to change her clothes.
The clothes looked familiar. I had only seen them once in my memory.
Half a month after my eighteenth birthday, Kevin and his friends went up the mountain to race cars and accidentally hit someone.
Kevin was too scared to tell anyone and fled the scene in a hurry. Later, I found clues.
There was an inconspicuous camera in the mountains, but the footage was very blurry. It could barely make out the clothes the person was wearing, but not their face.
I once sent someone to look for her, but there was no sign of the woman at the crime scene. I thought she might have been rescued by nearby villagers, but after inquiring for a long time, there was no trace of her.
Then, on Kevin's twentieth birthday, he didn't learn his lesson and went out racing again.
Unfortunately, this time it was him who was hurt. Kevin was involved in a car accident with multiple fractures and severely ruptured kidneys.
Kevin's condition was urgent, and there was no time to find a new kidney donor.
At that time, my mind was so dull that I couldn't think straight. My only reaction was that I couldn't let anything happen to Kevin.
So I secretly gave him a kidney transplant without telling anyone.
At that time, I foolishly thought this would be the best start for us.
But everything changed after six months of treatment in England. Kevin had a new love, and I became the person he hated the most.
"Linda, what do you mean... Clarify, what do you mean by saying that it was Lisa who gave me her kidney and you replaced her?"
Kevin was trembling all over, his face so pale that his eyes looked hollow.
"Literal meaning... Kevin, do you know how ridiculous it feels to hear you say you love me every time?
Years ago, when you hit and ran, I was bedridden for almost half a year and almost paralyzed. I hated you so much that I couldn't possibly love you.
The only one who has truly loved you from start to finish in this world is that stupid Lisa.
The saddest thing is that that fool is already dead. Watching all those who loved and protected you leave you one by one, do you know how satisfied I feel?
But all this is what you owe me."
Linda's tone was flat, but it was like a knife stabbing into Kevin's heart.
I saw the man crying, breaking down in sobs.
But Linda wouldn't let him off the hook. She grabbed the man's collar and repeated those cruel facts in his ear over and over again.
"Why didn't you kill me too?"
Kevin's eyes were red, and there was a strong hatred burning in them as he looked at Linda.
"Because I wanted to help you. You hated Lisa so much, and I helped you kill her, fulfilling your wish.
Years ago, my right kidney ruptured, and my left kidney was barely saved but had to be removed due to infection.
I knew it was Lisa who gave you her kidney, and I replaced her. During the years I stayed by your side, I killed every single person who truly cared about you in every possible way. Lisa was the only one left, and I definitely couldn't let her have it easy.
So I bribed the doctor to tell you that both of her kidneys were intact, so that you could conscientiously let Lisa undergo surgery with me. Then, Lisa, without her two kidneys, would die silently in this accident, hahaha..."
After Linda left, Kevin looked like a broken rag doll without a soul, staring blankly at the ceiling. After a long time, he muttered a few words.
"Lisa, I'm sorry. I was wrong..."
Kevin's cries sounded desolate, and I instinctively sighed.
I silently said a few words.
But it was too late.
My funeral was arranged by Logan, and Kevin insisted on coming to make a scene.
In the end, he was unwelcomely kicked out.
"Mr. Kevin, I think Lisa wouldn't want you at her funeral."
Logan was almost broken, tears streaming down his face uncontrollably.
Yet he had to muster his energy to take care of everything for me.
Seeing him like this, my heart was torn apart, but when I reached out, I grasped only emptiness.
Listening to the man cry and confess his guilt beside my coffin over and over again.
"Lisa, it's all my fault. I accidentally fell into Kevin's trap. Otherwise, how could you... Lisa, can you forgive me?"
Logan's eyes were swollen from crying, but I could only stand less than half a meter away from him, unable to do anything.
Fool, it's me who owe you an apology.
If it weren't for me, you wouldn't have been captured by Kevin and suffered so much.
I didn't realize that I had such good connections.
People came to pay their respects continuously, but none of them welcomed Kevin.
"Kevin, Auntie is begging you, for Lisa's sake, who did so much for you, just let her rest in peace, okay..."
My mom, who usually frets over every tiny wrinkle that appears, suddenly seemed to have aged ten years overnight.
Yet, she had no thought for herself; all she cared about was me.
My eyes welled up again with tears.
Mom, I'm sorry. I'm not a good daughter. I've made you sad.
Kevin was speechless. After a long pause, he cast a pale glance at me, lying silently in the coffin, and then left.
I don't know what's going on, but though my soul can exist briefly, it can only stay by Kevin's side.
Following him, I met Linda again. The woman has now propelled her company to the top in A City.
"Linda, it's all your fault! You killed Lisa. I'm going to kill you."
Kevin's eyes were glassy and dull at that moment. It seemed like, to him, killing someone was as simple as slaying an animal.
"Kill me? Kevin, you had your chance to do away with me before, but you didn't cherish it. Moreover, your life is in my hands now."
