Chapter 14: Risky Partnerships
There were Watchers all about. They resembled shadows, waiting, observing, and hiding in the shadows. Their presence was always there, like a heavy burden on my shoulders.
I had Nathaniel as my bulwark against the night. He was constantly there, keeping an eye on me and defending me. However, I was aware that he was also at risk. The Watchers also desired him.
An assault occurred on me one evening when I was going home from the library. A masked individual materialised from the darkness, a blade gleaming in the lunar light.
My heart was racing in my chest as I yelled. I made an effort to defend myself, but the assailant was stronger than me. With an iron-like grasp, they pinned me to the ground.
A pistol went off just as they were going to hit me. The assailant halted, their eyes going wide with shock.
With his rifle pulled Nathaniel sprang out of the shadows. After he let out a warning shot, the assailant ran away into the darkness.
I fell to the ground, breathing in short, sharp breaths. With worried eyes, Nathaniel knelt next to me.
"Are you alright?" he questioned, his voice faltering.
With my heart still racing, I nodded. For now, I was safe. However, I was aware that the threat was far from gone.
It was getting closer to me, and the Watchers would not stop until they got me. I needed to figure out how to break their curse and stop them.
However, as the days stretched into weeks, I started to understand that I was not alone in facing danger from the Watchers. Someone else existed, someone nearer to me.
I heard a noise one evening as I was reading the journal in my living room. With my pulse racing in my chest, I glanced up.
Liv was standing there at the doorway. She had a pistol in her hand and a calculated, icy malice in her eyes.
With a low, scary voice, she replied, "You have gone too far, Emma."
It seemed unbelievable to me. My closest buddy Liv was one of them.
"How were you able to?" My voice trembled as I asked.
She laughed at a cold sound that made my skin crawl. She said, "I have always been one of them." "I was only acting out a scene."
A shiver of treachery ran through me. My buddy Liv had been an employee of the Watchers from the beginning.
"Why?" With anguish in my voice, I questioned. "You would do this, why?"
With a shrug, her expression is lifeless and icy. "It is easy," she said. "Might. In charge."
I was unable to speak. She had deceived me, and I had trusted her.
With just a whisper, I replied, "You are one of them."
She gave a nod, a peculiar pleasure shining in her eyes. "Yes," she said. "I belong to that group. You are going to join us immediately."
Her rifle came up and she aimed it at me. I shut my eyes, preparing myself for what was about to happen.
Then something started to sound. A shot from a gun. When my eyes opened, I saw Nathaniel standing in the doorway, pointing his rifle at Liv.
He spoke the words, "You are going to pay for this," in a furious tone.
Liv turned to look at him, terror shining in her eyes. She trembled in her voice and answered, "No." "This is not something you can accomplish."
Nathaniel thought of nothing. Liv dropped to the ground, shocked and with her eyes wide open as he shot.
My heart was racing in my chest as I yelled. With a calculated, icy malice in his gaze, Nathaniel turned to confront me.
"You are next," he stated in a menacingly low voice.
Then he threw himself at me.
I sidestepped his blow by ducking. Heart thumping, I got to my feet and hurried towards the door.
Nathaniel followed closely, his footsteps echoing behind me. With excruciating agony in my legs, I ran out of the home. While I rushed through the streets, I looked for a spot to hide in the darkness.
As I arrived at the town's outskirts, darkness encroached from all directions. I turned to check for Nathaniel, but nothing was there. He has vanished.
I sat down on a park seat, my body shaking from lack of sleep. For now, I was safe. However, I was aware that the threat was far from gone. Still out there, Nathaniel would not give up until he got me.
I gazed up at the sky as I sat on the park seat. Their aloof, frigid glow stood in sharp contrast to the warmth of the fire that formerly raged inside me as if they were making fun of me.
I was lost. My innocence, my friends, and my trust. I was alone, lost in a black sea.
I was not going to give up, however. I had been through so much and seen so much. I would make it through this and figure out how to halt the Watchers.
I got to my feet, a peculiar resolve shining in my eyes. I was willing to pay any price to stand up for what was right.
I turned to face the town as I left. A hamlet engulfed in darkness, Eldridge Falls was a land of secrets and deception. However, I would alter that. I would make Eldridge Falls a better place and restore the light.
And I realised that the battle was far from done as I made my way towards the horizon. The Watchers remained on the field, their influence expanding every day.
However, I was prepared. I had never felt stronger than I do now. I would go into the dark, and I would triumph.
I saw a guy standing in the shadows as I rounded the corner. It was a lady wearing a black coat. Her eyes were filled with an unusual intensity as she watched me.
My heart was racing in my chest as I froze. That number seemed familiar to me. Sarah, the person from the journal, was there.
She emerged from the shadows with a calculated, icy anger in her gaze. With a low, scary voice, she replied, "You have gone too far, Emma."
It seemed unbelievable to me. Among them was Sarah, the lady I had looked up to and adored.
With a quiver in my voice, I apologised. "I believed you to be unique."
She laughed at a cold sound that made my skin crawl. "Altered?" she inquired. "You know, we are all the same. Everybody here is a part of something bigger."
I shook my head, tears rolling down from my eyes. "No," I said, my voice brimming with willpower. "I am not the same as you."
With a step closer, she reached for her pocket with her hand. Then I caught sight of it. She had a dagger in her hand.
I knew I had to move quickly. I took a quick swing at her, removing the knife from her grasp. For a short period, our bodies twisted and turned as we struggled.
I was able to extricate myself, and as I raced, my heart was racing. She came running behind me, footsteps echoing closely.
I felt the ache in my legs as I sprinted through the streets. She was coming closer, and I could sense the wrath in her voice.
As I arrived at the town's outskirts, darkness encroached from all directions. I turned to look for her, but nothing was there. She had vanished.
I sat down on a park seat, my body shaking from lack of sleep. For now, I was safe. However, I was aware that the threat was far from gone. I could still feel the Watchers out there, and they would not give up until they got me.
I gazed up at the sky as I sat on the park seat. Their aloof, frigid glow stood in sharp contrast to the warmth of the fire that formerly raged inside me as if they were making fun of me.
I had been through so much and seen so much. I was still upright, however. I would make it through this and figure out how to halt the Watchers.
And I turned to face the town as I turned to go.
