Chapter 20: Trash Sweeping
Janet had always been curious as to what exactly happens when you use mental contamination on a contaminant.
Janet had come into contact with very few contaminants. Fishman's obsession was because he had yet to catch the last train of the vanishing Line One.
She'd since checked the news that day. Underground radiation was spreading throughout the district, and the last train on line one was temporarily stopped due to the radiation right before the stop where Fishman was waiting.
Fishman had been waiting at the station. The more he waited, the more he panicked. He kept thinking he had missed the last train.
He kept saying that he couldn't find the last train, that he didn't have money for a cab.
The contaminant also needed a safe zone to maintain his mental stability.
Most contaminants would rationalize their actions when they do bad things; otherwise, they could easily have a mental breakdown.
What about Jack?
After killing his boss, he was sane for a while and soon drove himself crazy again.
He convinced himself that the boss tried to kill him first, that he was just defending himself.
He contaminated the rest of the hot pot restaurant.
He put his fingers in the cash register.
To make sense of the fondue restaurant, he made the whole thing look like Hailey's diary.
Make the hallucinations seen after the mental contamination come true. Then everything makes sense.
The rotting meat in the fondue restaurant, the monster in the garbage can, the strange smells.
Employees who keep disappearing, a strange basement, a boss who's molded into the root of all evil.
At the same time, he leaves tapes in the toilet tank, and he becomes the most logical victim.
This contaminated area had maintained an internal ecological balance until Janet shattered it.
Nora felt that the present situation was bizarre because Janet had done nothing in her eyes.
But the vast pig's face suddenly stops in front of her.
Jack's expression was pained as if he wanted to say something but couldn't.
He wanted to hiss in anger, then realized he had no reason to hiss.
He wanted to laugh happily, then realized he had no reason to laugh.
He wanted to cry, but he likewise had no reason to cry.
The fondue restaurant was starting to get chaotic.
A few of the employees had been clapping wildly.
They were halfway through the broken hole and looked like they were hanging upside down from the ceiling, including the Pigman.
They were laughing, the corners of their mouths pulled up to their ears, and clapping their hands very fast as if they were going to break them.
Jack in the mirror cried and laughed, the broken lens undulating and fluctuating with each movement.
Janet's order from the hot pot restaurant was utterly broken, and the people here started to go mad en masse.
Janet took a step forward.
The mirrors in front of her backed up, and Jack looked at Janet warily as if she were looking at an absolute monster.
Janet took a step forward, and the Pollutant took a step back.
Eventually, the mirror was cornered, but there was no way for him to drill back in.
Nora could see the Pollutant trembling.
The Pollutant's brain was confused.
The prop Janet had used had an effect.
If it had an effect, then add more.
She tapped the system panel again.
[The system has opened "Rotting Fish Head"; this prop will consume five life points. Is it possible to use Spiritual Pollution on Jack's stack?
Janet: "YES."
Immediately afterward, the source of pollution revealed a blank expression.
The entire contaminated area began to become extremely quiet.
It was so quiet that the sound of breathing could be heard.
This rhythmic breathing filled the contaminated area. But it wasn't Nora and Janet's voices; it was the voice from the source of contamination.
The Pigman, hidden in the mirror, tentatively stretched out his hand.
Both of his arms are covered in scars.
After he stretched out his hand, he paused and looked down at his palm.
As if pondering a difficult question.
Then, his arms reached out to his face and slightly tugged the sides.
A deep crack appeared inside the contaminated area.
The crack spread from the pig's face in the mirror and continued to extend to the ceiling and the floor.
The contaminated area was so fragile that it was almost like a papier-mâché toy, slowly collapsing from the inside.
The Pollutant had actually committed suicide!
Nora looked at this incredulously.
Contamination spores gushed out from the mouth torn open in the contaminated area.
Thousands of contamination spores.
It wasn't until she saw the contamination spores that Janet breathed a sigh of relief, her tense body relaxing.
She had succeeded.
Janet had spent ten life points in order to gamble on whether the contamination source would be mentally contaminated again.
Too high a concentration of contamination would cause the internal balance of the contaminated area to break down, ultimately leading to collapse.
Ding!
The system's mechanical voice sounded in Janet's head - Congratulations on completing the random mission of the cannibal hotpot restaurant, purification level 100, rescue survivor mission, completion level 100!
Reward settlement is in progress.
Congratulations on obtaining the base reward, spirit value restored to 100
Congratulations on receiving a purification reward of 2,000. Currently, your purification value has accumulated to 2,154.
Congratulations on receiving the Pigman Reward "Pigman's Guillotine."
Reward Description: A c-contaminant item that can kill a mission target once within 24 hours.
Congratulations on receiving the Beginner's talent "Metal Manipulation." This talent allows the beginner to manipulate metal materials within a meter's distance.
Congratulations on obtaining the randomized quest reward, Master Key.
Reward Description: Can open any door
This quest line promotes the side quest - Finding the Truth of Death, key clues have been found, search progress 20
The progress bar for the side quest has increased from 5 to 20 because of Forever Pharmaceuticals.
Janet hasn't heard of the company, so she must investigate once she gets out.
After the contaminated area collapsed, the fondue restaurant was restored to its original appearance.
A thick layer of dust had accumulated inside, and the interior of the hot pot restaurant that no one had operated for thirty years was filthy.
Scrap table tops, beer bottles scattered everywhere, blackened walls.
If one ignored the rotting flesh and contamination spores on the ground, it looked like an ordinary abandoned building.
Thousands of spores of contamination illuminated the fondue restaurant's interior in blood red.
Janet was more experienced than the first time. She knew she had to start sheltering the contaminated spores immediately.
Next to her, Nora looked shocked; it was the first time she had seen so many contamination spores at once.
She had only seen them in the lab before, and only three of them.
In Nora's mind, Janet was simply a talent. She still didn't understand how Janet killed the contaminants without a weapon.
Nora: "Thank you for saving me."
Nora was wondering how much it would be appropriate to give Janet as a thank you.
Janet was canceling the automated message that she had completed her mission less than an hour after entering the contaminated area.
Janet asked, "How are you doing mentally now?"
Nora thought Janet was concerned about her and said stoutly, "Not bad, I don't seem to have lost my mind."
Nora: "You saved me. I will thank you. My family will bring money."
"No need." Janet already had the system reward, which was very rich this time.
Janet continued, "You just need to sweep the garbage for me."
"What?" Nora froze.
Janet actually asked herself to sweep the garbage.
Nora had never even seen a broom since she was born.
"I'm supposed to sweep the trash." Janet opened her cleaning backpack, pulled out her cleaning tools, and tossed one to Nora. Thousands of spores were inside the contaminated area, and Janet would be working alone until dawn.
Nora could do her this favor if she weren't severely mentally contaminated.
Nora needed clarification on the cleaning tools she had in hand.
Janet demonstrated and collected a contaminated spore, "Did you learn how to do that?"
Nora nodded.
All she had to do was bring the straw close to the contaminated spore, and it was automatically collected.
Nora tried it and found the process quite healing.
Nora: "Do we just need to collect the contaminated spores?"
If that's all we do, it's not really that hard to tolerate.
Janet explains, "We need to clean up the site after we're done collecting, cleaning up all the rotting flesh and blood. We need to make sure there aren't any contaminated spores left. The two of us should be able to get it done in two hours if we're fast."
Nora."
Janet had found out the hard way that if she ever wanted to do something like sheltering contaminated spores in the future, she certainly couldn't do it alone. She would have to find a way to develop her own companions later.
Janet was already envisioning how to expand her trash sweeping team. Nora was her first development.
Janet: "Remember to call your family to tell them you're okay. Let's get to work."
