Good Parents
The soft hum of evening settled in around them, and Harris couldn't help but be drawn to the woman sitting across from him. Mallory, with her warm smile and nurturing presence, had a way of putting his worries at ease, even when he knew she had her own concerns.
Harris sipped his coffee, savoring the moment of tranquility before he ventured into the complexities of his day. The meet-up he had with Dominic was stressful, but it was all gone when he saw Mallory and Harriet.
"So, how was your day?" Mallory asked concern laced her voice, seeing how drained Harris's face was.
"Good. It turns out, I was right all along, so the talk went smoothly." He plans on keeping what he knows about Dominic until he must share Dominic's identity with Mallory.
Mallory nodded, her eyes reflecting pride in her partner's achievements. "I'm glad to hear that, Harris. You've always had a way of turning things around."
He chuckled, grateful for her unwavering support. "Well, I have a brilliant co-pilot in this journey," he said, winking at Mallory.
Mallory blushed at the compliment, her cheeks tinged with a soft pink.
Their conversation shifted, as it often did, to their daughter, Harriet. Mallory's eyes lit up as she recounted the day's adventures with their little one. "We spent the morning in the garden," she said, her voice filled with warmth. "Harriet insisted on feeding the fish, and we had a small picnic by the pond."
Harris listened intently, hanging on her every word. The image of his two favorite people enjoying a simple day together brought a genuine smile to his face. "Sounds like a perfect day," he remarked.
Mallory's gaze softened as she continued, "And then, your mom visited. Harriet was thrilled to see her, Harris. She's been asking about her grandparents lately, and I thought it would be nice for them to spend some time together."
Harris couldn't help but feel a pang of guilt for his earlier worries. He knew that Marian's presence in their lives was a sensitive topic, given the circumstances surrounding their family dynamics. "Did everything go okay?" he asked, concerned creeping back into his voice.
Mallory reassured him with a gentle smile. "Yes, Harris, everything was fine. Your mom played with Harriet, and they seemed to enjoy each other's company. Harriet was so happy."
As they talked, Harris couldn't help but admire Mallory's unwavering love and understanding. She had a unique ability to see the good in people and situations, even when he struggled to do the same. Her devotion to their daughter was evident in every word and gesture, and it filled his heart with warmth.
Later that night, as they checked on a peacefully sleeping Harriet, Harris couldn't contain his admiration any longer. "Mallory, you're an amazing mother. Harriet is lucky to have you," he said, his voice soft and filled with gratitude.
Mallory's heart beating in harmony. "And she's lucky to have you as her father," she replied, her voice a gentle whisper.
"Thank you, Mallory, that means so much to me. I want you to know, I am confident Harriet will grow up to be a good citizen in our community with your guidance." All the doubts that Dominic instilled in him in the cafe were gone. He is Harriet's father, and he can provide the best for his daughter.
"Thank you," she replied, trying to ignore the way her pulse quickened at his words. "It's not always easy, but she's worth it."
Harris nodded, his eyes full of understanding. "I can only imagine. But I want you to know that if you ever need anything, I'm here for you. Both of you." His gaze flicked briefly to Harriet, peacefully sleeping.
Mallory swallowed hard, touched by his concern. "I appreciate that Harris. And I want you to know, you're doing even better each day as a father."
"I'm trying my best to fill the years I've missed. Seeing Harriet happy brings me joy. You two motivate me to do my best and be the best I can be."
Hearing those words made Mallory nervous even more. She has been adamant in rejecting Harris's love offer since the first time they met again. Yet he keeps on flirting with her whenever he has the chance, leaving Mallory breathless and even more confused about her feelings for him.
"By the way, I have good news for you," she said, diverting the topic. Mallory's eyes shimmered with excitement as she leaned forward to share her recent triumph.
"Harris, you won't believe how well the photo you released is doing. Some people are loving it, and the comments have been so heartwarming. I'm getting more followers on social media every day! And my friends from Harriet's former school are supporting me too."
Harris couldn't help but smile at her enthusiasm. He knew how important it was for Mallory to be recognized as a loving mother and an equal partner in their journey. "That's fantastic, Mallory," he replied, his pride evident. "You deserve all the love and support."
As their conversation flowed when they went out of Harrot's room, Mallory hesitated for a moment before bringing up another topic. "Harris, there's something I've been thinking about lately. With the positive attention we're getting, I was wondering if I could start an online candle business. It's something I've always been passionate about, and I'd love to turn it into a reality."
Harris's eyes brightened at Mallory's entrepreneurial spirit. "That's a wonderful idea, Mallory. Starting an online business can be a rewarding journey. What kind of advice are you looking for?"
Mallory felt a wave of gratitude for Harris's support and willingness to help. "Well, I know you have a lot of experience in the business world. Do you have any advice on how to get started? Like, what steps should I take first, and how can I make it successful?"
Harris leaned in, his tone earnest. "Absolutely, Mallory. First, you should develop a business plan. Define your niche, your target audience, and your unique selling points. Research the market and your competition to understand what sets you apart."
Mallory nodded, absorbing his words. "That makes sense. What about the practical side of things, like funding and logistics?"
Harris continued to share his insights. "Funding can come from various sources, like personal savings, loans, or even investors if you're looking to expand. As for logistics, you'll need a reliable supplier for materials, a platform to sell your products, and a solid marketing strategy to reach your audience."
Mallory listened intently, grateful for Harris's guidance. "Thank you, Harris. This is really helpful. I feel more confident about taking the first steps now."
Harris smiled warmly, his admiration for Mallory growing with each passing day. "You've got this, Mallory. I'll support you every step of the way. And if you ever need any help or advice, just know that I'm here for you."
With a newfound sense of purpose and Harris's unwavering support, Mallory felt ready to embark on her entrepreneurial journey.
As Harris was about to go to bed, he got a call from his private detective. "Jane, do you have anything important for me?" He asked. Given the time of calling, Harris thought Jane must have urgent information to share.
"Absolutely, Mr. Thompson. This is about the suspicions you have if Dominic had any help from people in your circle. And yes, he did."
