Shadows in the Dark"
The tension in Damon's penthouse was suffocating. The air felt heavier, as if the walls themselves were closing in. Alina sat stiffly on the leather couch, her fingers clenching the fabric. Lucas stood near the window, his phone still gripped in his hand, his face grim.
Damon's eyes were locked onto him. 'Say that again."
Lucas exhaled, shaking his head. 'I said—Victor isn't the biggest problem anymore. There's someone else."
Damon leaned forward, his elbows on his knees. His patience was razor-thin. 'Who?"
Lucas hesitated, then said the name that would change everything.
'Adrian."
A slow, deadly silence filled the room.
Damon's expression darkened. He had spent years eliminating threats, making sure no one could challenge him. Yet this name—"Adrian"—was completely foreign. And that made him dangerous.
Alina swallowed hard. 'Who is he?"
Lucas ran a hand through his hair. 'We don't know much yet. But from the way Victor's men talked, Adrian isn't just another rival." He met Damon's gaze. '"He's someone they fear.""
Damon's jaw clenched. If Victor's people feared this man, it could only mean one thing—"Adrian was worse."
A sickening realization settled in Alina's chest. 'Do you think Victor was working with him?"
Lucas frowned. 'I doubt it. If he was, he would have used Adrian's name as leverage before you put him in handcuffs."
Damon stayed silent, his mind piecing together fragments of information. Victor had been arrogant. Ruthless. But he had never once mentioned a greater force at play.
Yet his final words now played in Damon's mind like a haunting echo:
*"You won't see him coming."*
At the time, Damon had thought it was a desperate attempt to hold onto control. But what if it hadn't been about Victor at all?
What if it had been a warning?
Lucas continued, his voice low. 'We need to find out who Adrian is before he makes a move."
Damon nodded. 'And we need to do it fast."
Alina exhaled, wrapping her arms around herself. "She wasn't just afraid of Victor anymore."
Now, there was something far worse lurking in the shadows.
And his name was Adrian.
New York City pulsed with life, but for Damon, the city had never felt more suffocating. He stood by the penthouse window, staring at the glowing skyline, his mind lost in calculations.
Adrian. The name felt like a ghost. An unknown enemy lurking beyond his reach.
Lucas sat on the couch, scrolling through his phone. 'I've got our people digging, but so far, there's nothing. No records. No affiliations. It's like he doesn't exist."
Damon's fingers curled into fists. 'Everyone leaves a trail. Find his."
Lucas nodded, his expression grim. 'Yeah, but what if he wants to be found?"
Damon didn't respond. The idea was unsettling, but it was possible. A man like Adrian wouldn't just appear without a reason. "And if he was showing himself now, it was intentional."
The sound of footsteps made them both turn.
Alina stood in the doorway, wearing one of Damon's shirts, her hair slightly tousled from sleep. But her expression was sharp.
'I couldn't sleep," she admitted, stepping into the room. 'I kept thinking about what Victor said."
Damon softened slightly. 'You don't have to worry about that now."
Alina shook her head. 'No. I do." She hesitated. 'What if Victor's warning wasn't about himself? What if he was warning you about Adrian?"
Damon's stomach tightened. "That thought had already crossed his mind."
Before he could respond, Lucas's phone buzzed. He answered immediately, his expression shifting as he listened.
A second later, he cursed under his breath.
Damon straightened. 'What?"
Lucas ended the call, his face tight with tension. 'One of our informants—he was supposed to meet me tonight. They just found his body in an alley downtown."
The room went still.
'Execution style," Lucas added. 'No signs of struggle. One clean shot to the head."
Alina gasped.
Damon's grip tightened. 'Adrian."
Lucas nodded grimly. 'Looks like a message."
Damon's heart pounded. He had played this game long enough to know how it worked. "This wasn't a coincidence. This was the first move."
Alina's breathing was shallow. She had seen the brutality of Victor's world, but this felt different. More calculated. More "deliberate."
She stepped closer to Damon. 'What do we do now?"
Damon exhaled, turning toward the window again. The city stretched before him, glowing and vibrant, but he saw none of it.
Because in the darkness, a new threat was rising.
"Adrian was here."
And he had just declared war.
