A Race Against Shadows
The city pulsed with life around them, but Alina felt like she was moving through a nightmare. The cold night air bit at her skin as she followed Damon through the dimly lit alley behind the diner. Every footstep felt like a countdown to disaster.
Damon moved with calculated precision, his grip on her wrist firm but not painful. His sharp eyes scanned every corner, every shadow, every movement. He was a predator navigating familiar terrain, but tonight, the hunt wasn't in his favor.
'We need a car," Damon muttered under his breath.
Alina's pulse pounded. 'Where's Lena?"
'She'll be safe," Damon assured her. 'For now."
For now.
The weight of those words settled heavily in Alina's chest. Everything was unraveling too fast. They had the flash drive, but Adrian knew. That meant they weren't just running for answers anymore—they were running for their lives.
Damon suddenly stopped, pulling Alina to a halt beside him. He pressed her against the wall of a brick building, his body shielding hers as his eyes flicked toward the street.
Alina held her breath.
A black sedan rolled past slowly, its windows tinted, its presence deliberate.
Damon's jaw tightened.
'Adrian's men," he whispered.
Alina felt a cold dread creep up her spine.
The car didn't stop, but it didn't need to. The message was clear: they were being hunted.
Damon exhaled sharply and reached into his jacket. He pulled out his phone, his fingers moving quickly over the screen.
'What are you doing?" Alina asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
'Calling in a favor," Damon said without looking up.
His phone vibrated a second later. He answered, his voice low and clipped. 'We need a car. Now."
Alina couldn't hear the response, but whatever was said made Damon nod sharply. 'Two blocks over? Got it."
He ended the call and turned to her. 'We move fast and stay low."
Alina swallowed and nodded.
They slipped through the back alleys like ghosts, weaving between dumpsters and side doors until they reached a narrow street. Parked at the curb was a sleek black Audi with tinted windows.
The driver—a man in his early thirties with short blond hair and a rugged build—gave a nod as they approached.
'Get in," he said, unlocking the doors.
Alina hesitated for only a second before climbing into the backseat. Damon slid in beside her.
The driver pulled away smoothly, merging into traffic as if they weren't fleeing for their lives.
'Who is this?" Alina asked, glancing at Damon.
'Colt," Damon answered. 'He's one of the few people I trust."
Colt smirked in the rearview mirror. 'That's saying something."
Alina wasn't in the mood for introductions. 'Where are we going?"
Damon's expression was unreadable. 'Somewhere safe."
Alina let out a humorless laugh. 'Does that place even exist anymore?"
Damon didn't answer.
Colt took a sharp turn, maneuvering through the city like a man who knew how to disappear.
After a few minutes, he spoke. 'You have company."
Damon turned, looking out the back window. Alina followed his gaze.
A black SUV was trailing them.
Her stomach dropped.
'They found us," she whispered.
Colt's grip on the wheel tightened. 'Yeah, no kidding."
Damon's voice was calm but cold. 'Lose them."
Colt smirked. 'With pleasure."
He suddenly accelerated, weaving through traffic with an expertise that had Alina gripping the seat. The SUV followed, pushing its way through the lanes.
'They're persistent," Colt muttered.
Damon's eyes were sharp. 'They won't stop until we make them."
Colt made another sharp turn, tires screeching as he maneuvered down a side street. The SUV followed, closing the distance.
Alina's breath came in quick bursts.
Then Colt did something unexpected.
He slammed the brakes.
The sudden stop made Alina lurch forward, but before she could process what was happening, Colt threw the car into reverse, backing into a narrow alley.
The SUV sped past them.
Colt wasted no time. He turned the car around and sped off in the opposite direction.
Alina glanced back.
The SUV was trying to turn around, but they had gained a few precious seconds.
'We need to ditch the car," Damon said.
Colt nodded. 'I know just the place."
A few minutes later, they pulled into an underground parking garage. Colt drove up two levels before stopping near a row of parked vehicles.
'Out," he ordered.
Alina and Damon didn't hesitate.
Colt tossed Damon a set of keys. 'The black Range Rover. It's clean."
Damon gave a single nod. 'Thanks."
Colt gave Alina a quick glance. 'Stay close to him. And don't trust anyone."
Alina nodded.
Without another word, Colt walked away.
Damon led Alina to the Range Rover.
Once inside, he started the engine and pulled out of the garage.
For a few minutes, there was nothing but silence.
Then Alina turned to him. 'Where are we going?"
Damon's grip on the wheel tightened.
'To finish this."
Alina exhaled.
There was no turning back now.
