The Cipher’s Edge
Alina felt the weight of Adrian's words hanging in the air like a thick fog, suffocating everything around her. Langston's daughter. The one who held the key to the encryption. The one who could unravel everything they had fought for.
But there was no simple path to her. There never was. Not with people like Langston in the equation.
'You're lying," Damon's voice was firm, controlled, though Alina could hear the tightness in it. 'Langston had no children."
Adrian didn't flinch. 'The world has no idea about her. Langston's dirty little secret. But believe me, Damon, she's real. And she's hiding somewhere that even I can't reach."
Alina's mind raced. 'Why would she help you?" she asked, her voice steady even though everything inside her was a whirlwind of questions and fear.
Adrian smirked, taking a step closer to them, his eyes gleaming with a mixture of arrogance and something darker. 'She doesn't need to help me. She just needs to protect herself. Just like the rest of us."
'Why are you telling us this?" Damon asked, his voice sharp. 'You think we'll just run off and find her for you?"
'No." Adrian's smile faltered for a second. 'You'll find her for yourselves. For your own reasons. I'm just providing the road map."
'And what's in it for you?" Alina pressed, stepping closer, her gaze unwavering.
Adrian's eyes locked with hers. 'You don't get it, do you? I'm not here to make deals with you. I'm here to make sure Langston's empire falls. You think I'll just sit back and let you play hero while the rest of us burn? No. I've got my own score to settle. But I don't mind sharing my information. So long as we're all going down the same path."
Damon tensed, clearly not trusting a word Adrian said, but Alina knew this was their only lead. The only way to find the last piece of the puzzle.
'And you'll be in the shadows, waiting for us to fall into your trap?" Damon asked, narrowing his eyes.
Adrian's grin widened. 'Don't fool yourself, Damon. You and I both know I never play fair. If you want to find Langston's daughter, you'll have to follow the trail I'm giving you. But I promise, by the time you find her, there will be nothing left but dust."
Alina's pulse quickened. Every fiber in her being screamed at her to trust her instincts. To not walk down this path that Adrian was laying out. But there was no other choice.
'We'll find her," Alina said, her voice low and resolute. 'But this ends with Langston. Not you."
Adrian tilted his head, his smile never fading. 'We'll see about that."
Later that night, Alina sat alone in the penthouse, the weight of the decision pressing down on her. Damon had gone silent after their encounter with Adrian, disappearing into his office to make arrangements. Tobias was out, trying to track down any leads on Langston's daughter. But Alina couldn't shake the feeling that they were being pulled into a game far bigger than they understood.
She stared at the encrypted files from the drive, still untouched on the table. The clues were there, hidden beneath layers of firewalls, but without the cipher, they were useless.
And without Langston's daughter, they had nothing.
She stood up, pacing the floor, her thoughts spiraling. What did Adrian know that they didn't? What had he been through that had twisted him so completely?
A soft knock on the door broke her from her thoughts.
'Come in," she called out.
Damon stepped into the room, his face tense, his eyes shadowed. He looked at her, his expression unreadable.
'We need to talk," he said.
Alina nodded, her stomach tightening. 'About Adrian?"
'About everything."
He walked over to the table, staring down at the encrypted files. 'We're running out of time. If we can't crack these files, we're dead in the water. And Vale's not sure how long we can keep the trackers off our trail."
Alina didn't say anything. She had no answers. She had nothing but the gnawing feeling in the pit of her stomach, the sense that this entire thing had been a setup from the start. They were chasing ghosts, fighting against forces much bigger than them.
Damon's eyes met hers, and for the first time, she saw the vulnerability in them. The raw, unguarded truth that had always been buried beneath layers of lies and secrets.
'I'm sorry," he said, his voice low.
Alina felt a sharp pang in her chest. 'For what?"
'For not telling you everything. For not preparing you for what's coming." He paused, his gaze unwavering. 'But I promise you, I'll protect you. No matter what."
Alina swallowed hard, the words she wanted to say stuck in her throat. She wanted to tell him that they didn't need promises, that they needed the truth. But the truth was buried so deep in both of them, they could barely see it.
Instead, she simply nodded. 'We need to find Langston's daughter."
Damon sighed, raking a hand through his hair. 'I know. And we will. But we need to move carefully. Every step we take from here on out is a risk."
Alina glanced at the encrypted files again. 'We have no choice. The clock's ticking."
The next day, the team was on the move.
They had a lead—a place Langston's daughter might be hiding, a remote location in the Catskills. Vale had hacked into Langston's old contacts, triangulating every signal they could find, every piece of information they had. But even with all the resources at their disposal, nothing felt certain.
As Alina climbed into the SUV, Damon at her side, Tobias behind the wheel, she couldn't shake the feeling that they were walking straight into a trap.
But they had no other choice. The game had changed, and the stakes were higher than ever.
And as they drove toward the unknown, Alina knew one thing for sure: they couldn't stop now.
Not when everything was on the line.
