A Deal with the Devil
Alina's pulse thundered in her ears as Adrian's words sank in.
*"If you don't cooperate, Damon dies."*
The car's engine purred beneath them, the road stretching into the abyss of the night. Cold air seeped through the barely cracked window, but Alina's body burned with a mix of fear and fury.
She couldn't let Damon die.
But giving Adrian access to the drive meant giving him power—power that could destroy more lives than just Damon's.
Alina forced herself to breathe evenly. Think. She had to be smart about this.
"How do I know you won't kill Damon anyway?" she asked, testing his reaction.
Adrian chuckled, glancing at her through the rearview mirror. "Ah, now you're thinking like me. I like that."
Alina clenched her jaw.
Adrian continued, his voice smooth as silk. "But to answer your question—I gain nothing from killing him. Not yet, anyway. I need him alive. And I need you willing to cooperate."
Her fingers curled into fists behind her back, the zip ties biting into her skin.
"I want proof that he's alive," she said firmly.
Adrian smirked. "Of course you do. You always did have a soft spot for him."
Reaching into his pocket, he pulled out a phone and tapped the screen. A few seconds later, the device rang.
Alina held her breath.
Then—
A muffled groan.
"Alina?" Damon's voice was strained, weak.
Tears burned in her eyes. "Damon!"
"Don't—" His words cut off abruptly, followed by a sharp grunt of pain.
Alina's stomach lurched. "Stop! Stop hurting him!"
Adrian sighed dramatically. "That depends on you, darling. Help me, and he stays alive. Refuse, and, well…" He trailed off, letting the silence fill in the threat.
Alina swallowed the bile rising in her throat.
"I need time," she whispered. "To unlock the files. It's not something I can do instantly."
Adrian's eyes flickered with amusement. "Now we're negotiating. Good girl."
She wanted to slap the smug look off his face.
But she had to be careful.
"I'll need a computer, access to secure software," she continued, trying to sound as if she was already considering his demand. "If I try to force the encryption open the wrong way, the data could self-destruct."
Adrian's smirk faded slightly. "Is that so?"
She nodded, forcing a shudder into her voice. "Yes. Damon has fail-safes. He wouldn't have left something this valuable unprotected."
Adrian studied her, his fingers tapping against the steering wheel.
Then, he smiled. "You're lying."
Alina's breath hitched.
Adrian chuckled. "But that's okay. I admire the effort. And since I need you alive, I'll play along. For now."
Her stomach twisted.
This was a deadly game. One wrong move, and Adrian wouldn't hesitate to kill them both.

The car finally came to a stop in front of a grand estate hidden behind towering iron gates. The structure was nothing like Damon's sleek city penthouse—it was old-world, European, with tall, arched windows and ivy crawling up stone walls.
Adrian's home.
A place drenched in secrets and blood.
Alina was yanked from the car the moment the door opened. Strong hands gripped her arms, forcing her forward. She stumbled, but they didn't slow down.
Adrian walked ahead, his posture relaxed, as if this were just another night.
The inside of the mansion was cold, impersonal. The floors gleamed under the chandelier's dim light, and the scent of expensive cigars clung to the air.
"Put her in the study," Adrian ordered.
The guards shoved her into a room lined with towering bookshelves, a grand mahogany desk at its center.
Adrian followed, closing the door behind him.
"Sit," he instructed, motioning to a chair.
Alina hesitated.
He arched a brow. "Do I need to remind you of what's at stake?"
Grinding her teeth, she sat.
Adrian walked to a cabinet, poured himself a drink, and then leaned against the desk.
"You know, I always knew there was something different about you," he mused, swirling the amber liquid in his glass. "Damon isn't the type to get attached. Yet, here we are."
Alina glared at him. "You don't know anything about us."
Adrian smirked. "Don't I?" He took a sip, watching her over the rim of his glass. "Damon and I were once like brothers. I know exactly what kind of man he is. And I know he would burn this entire world down for you."
Alina's heart pounded.
"And that," Adrian continued, "is what makes you his greatest weakness."
She swallowed hard. "If I'm his weakness, then why am I still alive?"
Adrian chuckled. "Because I don't want to destroy him just yet. I want him to suffer first. To watch as everything he's fought for crumbles."
His eyes darkened. "And you, my dear, are the perfect tool for that."
Alina forced herself to hold his gaze. She couldn't let him see her fear.
"So what now?" she asked, keeping her voice steady.
Adrian smirked. "Now? Now you do exactly what I say."
He gestured to the laptop on the desk.
"Get to work."
Alina's fingers trembled as she reached for the keyboard. She had no idea how she was going to get out of this.
But she had to find a way.
Damon's life depended on it.

Hours passed.
Adrian left her alone, but the guards outside the door reminded her that escape was impossible.
She stared at the screen, pretending to work, but her mind raced with possibilities.
There had to be a way to turn this around.
She had the drive. She had access to Adrian's network now.
Maybe, just maybe—
Her fingers hesitated over the keys.
If she could send a signal, a message, something to let Damon know where she was—
The door suddenly swung open.
Alina's heart stopped.
Adrian stepped inside, his expression unreadable.
"You've been quiet," he said, strolling toward her. "Too quiet."
Alina swallowed hard. "I'm working."
Adrian studied the screen. "Are you?"
He reached for her wrist, his grip firm.
Alina winced.
"You're stalling," he murmured.
Her breath caught.
Adrian leaned closer, his lips curving into a slow, wicked smile.
"But that's okay," he whispered. "Because time's up."
A knock at the door interrupted them.
Adrian straightened.
The guard outside stepped in.
"Sir, we have a problem."
Adrian's eyes narrowed. "What kind of problem?"
The guard hesitated. "Damon Cross is here."
Alina's heart leaped.
Adrian's smirk returned, but this time, it was laced with something far more dangerous.
"Well, well," he murmured. "Looks like the fun is just getting started."
Alina's pulse thundered.
Damon was here.
And everything was about to explode.
