Chapter Twenty Eight - Fight it or Learn - Maya's POV
He disappears after telling me I'll move rooms.
'You could have closed the door. Oh, wait. It's busted," I say sarcastically.
He never comes back, even after several seconds and then I hear a door slam a few down from me. I breathe out a heavy breath and look down at the splintered wood. Broken shards litter the floor where he came in earlier.
Well, his wolf came through.
As I stare down at the broken pieces, I'm reminded that nothing about this place is safe. At least they can't lock me in.
Footsteps fill the hallway and a few seconds later, Evelyn is standing in the wreckage. She looks down at the pieces beneath her shoes and sighs. 'Boy, he really did it this time."
For a moment, I feel safe. Evelyn has been kind to me and never been a reason for alarm, but now I see her in a new light.
'Are you one of them?"
Her eyes glow. 'Yes."
As if the eyes glowing weren't enough to tell me, she felt like she needed to respond, I guess.
I shut my eyes and groan. 'Okay. Is everyone here a wolf like you two?"
'Yes," she says again. 'We're all wolves here except you. I'm sure you have more questions, but I have been instructed to only tell you certain things. Domain wants to be the one that tells you."
I remember asking him about the prophecy he mentioned. When I look up at her and meet her warm gaze, I know she probably can't answer it. 'Fine. You won't be able to tell me about a prophecy or being his mate, right?"
'What?" She asks, looking confused.
If she knows anything about what I just asked, I sure can't tell. 'You're a good actor."
'Who says I'm acting? I know nothing other than you need to go to another room. That is what I'm here to do. You will be staying a few rooms down next to Damian's."
'I don't want to go I say," I say, taking a stance in the middle of the room. 'This is my room and where I feel safe."
'Do you really feel safe with a broken door?" She asks, eyeing the nearly broken frame. 'How will you sleep with people looking in on you?"
'I will sleep in the bathroom if I have to, but I'm not leaving."
Evelyn breathes out a heavy sigh. 'Damian won't like this at all."
'I don't really care if he likes it or not," I say as I stare at her.
She smirks. 'You really are a defiant one, aren't you?" She asks, while letting out a soft laugh. 'Fine, you can stay the night, but tomorrow we will move you to another room. I'll talk to Damian and explain the situation."
I exhale a slow breath, the tension in my shoulders easing just slightly. But before she steps out, she glances back at me.
'Don't think of going anywhere else. The manor is off limits. Until you meet the pack and have your formal introduction, it is good for you to stay in this room."
I arch a brow. 'For a second, I thought you were going to tell me not to run away."
Evelyn chuckles as she leans against the ruined doorframe, arms crossed. 'And just where would you go? There are woods surrounding the property and go for miles. He would find you before you got too far away."
She's right. Even if I ran, where would I go? I don't know where I am exactly and, like she said, there are woods for miles. How far would I make it before he caught up to me? Could I even make it off the property?
Evelyn doesn't leave yet, but stands in the doorway, still looking at me. 'You're thinking about it, aren't you?"
'I don't enjoy feeling trapped."
'Well," she says as she motions with one hand to the open doorway. 'You shouldn't feel trapped with an open door."
A sharp retort rises to my lips, but I bite it back. Arguing with her won't get me anywhere and she isn't my enemy. Not yet, anyway.
I sigh and run a hand through my long locks. 'So, I just stay here and sleep with the door gone."
'I guess," she adds. 'You said this is the only place you feel safe and you don't want to move yet. I told you I would talk to Damian so we can do this in the morning."
'What if I refuse?"
She hides her chuckle with her hand. 'Then refuse. But I promise our alpha won't take this lightly."
'Oh, really?" I counter. 'He doesn't seem to want to tell me anything. Apparently, even this display wasn't how I was supposed to find out."
She grins as she rolls her eyes. 'He's a good leader, but you'll probably have a hard time with him. You see, he is very stubborn and when he thinks something needs to go a certain way, he likes for it to go exactly like that. Our alpha wanted to break you into our world easily, but his wolf had other ideas, it seems."
'Great," I laugh. 'Just what I need. A stubborn wolf who thinks fate just gets to decide my life for me and thinks it should go according to his plans."
Evelyn tilts her head in surprise. 'Fate is kinder than we realize. It gives us what we need. I know you are human, which is something I've reminded him of, but I promise you everything will be fine in the end."
Her words settle over me, but for once, don't fill me with dread. It feels like I truly have no choice and even Evelyn is stating almost the same thing as Damian.
I sit down on the edge of the bed as my legs cave from under me. 'You really believe all of this, don't you? That fate is why I'm here and fate will push us together?"
She's quiet for a long moment before answering. 'I believe in fate, but I also believe in choices. And right now, you only have one."
'Oh? And what reason is that? Because he told me I either choose this or die."
When I glance up at her, she's smiling at me as if I was a child.
'Your choice is to fight this every step of the way while it plays out before your eyes or figure out why it chose you."
