Chapter One Hundred and Fifteen - We Won't Die - Maya's POV
I open my eyes, and they land on the ceiling again. Why do I keep waking up like this?
A sigh escapes me as I once again sit up, holding the covers to my chest. I look to my right, and there is Damian, snuggled up beside me. The room is dark with only the glow of a nightlight somewhere along one of the walls.
'You scared me," he whispers, startling me.
'I didn't know you were awake," I say, resting my hand over my heart. 'What happened?"
'You've been out for three days," he says, keeping his voice low. 'A nearby pack was attacked and completely wiped out. Well, except for those who decided to switch sides or came running here. They arrived yesterday."
'They're really coming," I whisper, now feeling horrible.
'It's the last time," he reminds me. 'This has to be the last time. I think once they see that you're marked and mine, that it may change their minds. You just need a night of peace so we can finish this once and for all. But that means your powers have to be awakened."
Suddenly, everything comes rushing back to me and I realize that I had a vision. I could see it all so plainly. I was standing there, holding Damian's hand, yet he wasn't Damian in that life.
And I definitely wasn't a wolf. We were so happy together until his brother stepped between us emotionally.
He wanted me for himself, and then he killed Damian. In a rage, I cast a curse that locked us into this vicious cycle, only for us to reawaken five hundred years ago. Things are foggy, but I know Damian died again. Lorcan always won, but now he is the one dead in the ground and Damian is alive.
'I remember. Do you?"
Damian shakes his head. 'No, I don't. I think maybe I'm supposed to before we complete the mating. Maybe that is part of why your powers aren't fully set in."
I swallow hard as I let go of the covers and look down at my hands. Tendrils of magic curl around them. They're shining and bright, something I never thought possible.
'We need to go talk to the pack. They're gathering in the dining hall again," he says, abruptly throwing the covers off himself and slipping out of bed.
'What? Now? It's the middle of the night."
He just shrugs and starts pulling on a t-shirt over his head. 'I know, but something else apparently just got reported back. We need to be there now."
When he stands and turns, I get a good look at his face. There are shadows under his eyes that stand out in the dim lighting. He looks so tired and worn.
'Damian, whatever it is, can wait."
'No, it can't. More might die."
I sigh and get out of bed, quickly slipping on house shoes next to the bed and moving quickly. I don't even bother throwing on anything else, because it doesn't matter what I look like. If they don't like his t-shirt and shorts on me, then they can just not look.
We practically rush down the hallways all the way to the dining hall to find out what everyone is making a fuss over. When we enter the room, a hushed silence falls over the room and I stare at everyone in a new light. They're all scared and worried. I've never seen them look this way before.
'What is it?" Damian barks out, then looks around trying to find Ethan. At least, that is what I assume.
Soon, Ethan comes out of the packed crowd and huffs out a breath. 'Hey, she's awake. This is good news."
'Out with it," Damian growls."
'Got it. More arrived," Ethan says, his tone even and steady.
'What do you mean that more arrived?" Damian asks, his voice slipping and sounding more like a growl.
I look to the left, only to realize Damian is slowly losing control. His wolf emerges, with fur sprouting across his skin rapidly. Those closest to us take a step back and I reach out to stop it before it gets too far.
'Damian. You can't do this here."
He looks at me and all I see are those golden glowing eyes. Something about them looks different from before, then I remember the way the darkness held him when he killed his brother and the other wolves. It's eating away at him and I'm running out of time.
'There was an attack on another pack that hadn't caved. They said everything was gone. At least half of what survived went with the vampires and the rest are here."
That gets Damian's attention. 'Do we have enough rooms?"
Ethan nods. 'We'll make do, but there are so many pouring in from other packs. The war is going to be at our doors any day."
I breathe out a sigh as I watch Damian struggle to stay in control of his wolf. When he looks as if he might crack, I step up fully beside him, wrapping my arms around him, though he doesn't hug me back. 'I'm not afraid and I accept you just like you are."
The deepest breath he could have ever taken escapes him and the trembles in his body stops.
'Thank you," he whispers before shaking his head. 'Make sure they have a place to sleep for the rest of the night. Tomorrow we will prepare."
'Tomorrow? They could be coming tonight?"
'Tomorrow," Damian growls.
Instead of turning to walk back, he scoops me up in his arms first and then hauls me out of the room. He doesn't take long at all to get us back to the bedroom, then throws me onto the bed on top of the covers.
'Damian, what is happening? Why are you like this?"
He breathes out a harsh breath and climbs on top of the bed over me. 'This may be our last night and if we're going to die, I want you to know how much I want you."
His words are tender and sweet. I reach up, cupping his cheek in my hand. 'I know that, Damian. But we're not going to die."
