Chapter 13: Lawyer Riley Mintz
Aiden's P.O.V
Who are they?
From Riley I look at the direction of the door when the door slammed open, my body freezes on place not in astonishment, in curiosity. Taking a deep breath in I let it out as I keep a step forward watching each of them.
"Destroy everything in here," one of the five men orders and the others walk to their separate ways in the small room, my gaze follows his steps.
That man goes close to the shelf where the framed certificates and awards are placed on it, keeping another step forward I glare at that person whose face is plastered with a slick smile, he eyes at Riley and at me smugly which gets onto my nerves.
"If you dare, pull that down," I challenge squinting my eyes following his every subtle action.
The corner of his lips twitch up to an ugly smile, he chuckles softly sarcastically followed by the laughter of his mates, he raises his brows at me in amusement "Just a kid," he grunts under his breath yet I heard him.
I place my palms on the large desk in front of me, leaning over my arm I swing over to the other side as I grab the globe from the table. I move my gaze to the man who touches the frame, jumping forward I throw the globe to the targeted direction.
He grunts holding onto his nose which bleeds, I run towards him in a blink of an eye and I push the shelf beside onto his leg, his scream captures the environment. I turn around swiftly to see the other four men stomp to my direction, stepping back I move my hands behinds picking up the umbrella from the basket. My eyes follow their actions from left to right, I spread my legs wide, jumping forward abruptly hitting the side of one of their face.
Dusting my hands I look down at the four men on the ground, I turn around passing a glance at Riley.
What is he doing?
He keeps on hitting the man's head with a thick book, the man's arm stuck in the drawer while Riley leans over it, breaking his arm, watching them I walk towards him.
It's hilarious to watch him this way anyways
I stop in my tracks my eyes widens when the siren gets into my ears. Riley steps behind away from the drawer, the man takes his arm out painfully, he stumbles back falling to the ground for a slight push.
"Did you call 911?," my voice comes out loud when I see him relaxed.
"Yeah, isn't it something which I'm supposed to do," he replies, his smile shrinks when he watches me and I'm sure that he noticed me flustered.
I'm sure that Eric will be sticking his nose on everything which happens in this city to keep himself and his bosses safe. Calling him for help is like digging our own graves.
I let out heavy sigh looking around, hurrying to the window I peep out to see the cars parked down. Without hesitation I grab the penholder from the table, lofting my hands I hit hard on Riley's forehead.
"My goodness," he screeches along with hisses, crouching his body a little he places his right palm on the wounded area, he moves down his hand, those pair of brown eyes widens in horror when he sees the blood. Crimson red liquid flows down at the side of his face, running my hand through my hair I look away as he gapes at me with furrowed eyebrows ,squinted dyes curiously. In a blink of an eye I snatch the pen knife on the table, seizing the second of his lost attention I use the tiny blade of the pen knife. The left sleeve of his white shirt absorbs blood the very next second.
A loud yelp leaves his lips as he steps forward furiously "What the fuck are you...," He stops when he faces me "do...in..g," the last words comes out softly.
"Why are you mad at mw?," He howls.
I look around at the five men on the ground, four of them passed out, keeping a step back I face him again "Tell then it's self defence," I turn the pin board swiftly "Don't let them see that," I say pointing at the pin board, passing a glance at the astonished Riley I jump over the window, my feet landing on the excess ceiling of the bottom room.
"What happened?" The familiar cold voice Eric gets into my ears, I stick my body to the wall walking side way, hoping that no one peeps through the window.
Turning my head I lean over my left cheek trying to hear what's happening inside but no sound got through the walls. I stay there my legs feeling numb as I remained unmovable, blowing put some ait I walk sideways to the window, holding onto the grill I peep in a sigh of relief leaves my lips when I see the room empty. Jumping in I hurry out quickly, staring the car I drive to the station.
Taking the phone I call Blake.
"On duty?," I question as soon as he answers the call, my fingers tap on the steering wheel impatiently when the traffic light appears red.
"You alright, I'm off today," he asks, he always worries about me when I take over cases forgetting that I'm the one who is always worried about him for his recklessness.
"I'm okay, some men came to destroy Mr Mintz office," I stop my mind recalling Mr Mintz information "There is some evidence there," I blurt while my mind tries to figure out what it is "Is Harry safe?," Harry staying in Blake's place is the best for him as others will have no idea about it as Blake doesn't invite anyone home except me.
"Yes, do you want me to do something,"
I pull the break by the station when the three of the five men exit the station, parking the car in a corner I put the call on hold and take a picture of the last man who gets into the taxi.
"I'll send you a picture I need his information ASAP and stay safe let me know if you find something suspicious around,"
"Alright,"
I send the photo to Blake,
Sitting back I rest my shoulders on the seat closing my eyes waiting till I get a reply from Blake. I've been waiting here from one and now the sun is almost to set as well. My cheeks lifts up below my eyes when my mind flashes about Riley, don't know what he is doing inside now. The way he cried on me, I know how badly he wanted to apologize. My grin widens when I replay my action, when Riley was talking I recorded it and sent it to Mr Mintz at that second. I'm happy that he is aware of what his son needed to tell him.
The beep notification sound of my phone interrupts my thoughts, a weary sigh leaves my lips when I sit straight. Switching on my phone I check the message by Blake.
He has got the address
Without wasting any minute I start the engine driving to the mentioned address, It's been a long time and Riley has been in there alone. The dark road is lightened with the bright street lights and the shop's lightings, stopping the car by the road I get off as the lane is narrow where only a pair of people can walk on together, the brightness of the road reduces as the lane is in pin drop silence with a few a row houses. I walk ahead reading every number of the house my feet comes to an halt when I see the number forty, the last house.
Looking around at the empty lane where only two or three people are walking around, I knock at the door numerous times, my actions stop when I hear some noise from the inside. A smirk appears on my face when the door creeks open slightly and he peeps through the small gap. A gasp leaves his lips in astonishment as his eyes widens.
"Hello," I wave plastering a wide smile.
He acts swiftly, he tries to close the door but before he could defend I push the door open. Stepping in I close the door and follow the person who hurries and grabs a pair of scissors.
Standing by the table I stare at the clock when the small needle gets closer to twelve. The air around the room tenses with silence while Eric stands still leaning over table glaring at the man opposite to him.
"Isn't his explanation enough?," I slam my hands on the table taking others attention outside the room "You have no right to arrest a person when he fought to protect himself," I finally speak crossing my arms over the chest I step a side getting closer to Eric when he stands straight gazing at me, looking up at him I continue "The victim is held hostage while others are sent home "
"They were supposed to be hospitalised to treat their wound," he explains his voice low yet cold.
"So?," I raise a brow questionably "You will put an innocent behind the bars," he stays silent watching me, I could sense under those knitted brows, the pair of burning orbs tell all. He doesn't utter a word as he couldn't.
"I've recorded his explanation with proof," Eric furrows his brows curiously "The amount he received to destroy everything is large," I state "If you don't let Riley out now, I will publish these on media," chewing onto my inner cheek I step back, a grin spreads on my lips when I see him gritting his teeth.
He leaves the room furiously while I wait in the room eyeing at the man an assuring smile makes it's way on my lips "I'll send them abroad," I inform him "I'll get everything arranged tonight, you can visit them later," I exhale.
He agreed to turn back begging me not to kill him and finally spilled the beans. He and the other four men have been doing illegal business and they were forced to broke into Mintz office to save their family. They were blackmailed ordering them to burn down the office if they don't their wrong doing will be exposed and their family will be at risk. I promised him that I will keep his family safe if he proves himself guilty.
My eyes fall on the glass partition, I rush to the open door when I see Riley his eyes fixed to the floor. He walks with Eric and they both stop in front of me.
"You can let this slide now," Eric blurts dryly his eyes looking everywhere except me.
Passing a glance at Riley I face him again "Apologize," I demand which makes Eric to snap at me. He looks straight into my eyes in rage.
"Sorry," he utters softly lowering his gaze.
"He didn't hear you," Riley faces me knitting his brows his lips parted "And for your kind information he is a lawyer," Eric looks at me again and passes a glance at Riley "You've arrested a lawyer for no reason," I smirk, waiting to hear him apologize.
"I'm sorry sir," the words finally comes out from his mouth.
