Chapter 15: Working together
Third Person P.O.V
Curling her brows, Aiden runs her hand through her hair drowsily, her mouth opens wide yawning. She sits straight and brushes the few strands of hair on her face behind her ears, her brows furrow curiously when she feels the texture of material around her palm, bringing her hand to view she examines the bandage tied around her palm with a neat bow. The corners of her lips twitch upwards to a spontaneous smile, untying the bandage she stomps to the washroom.
The crispy golden brown sandwiches pop out, taking it Riley sets the sandwiches on the plate, he then removes the grizzling omelette from the heated pan, the yolk wobbly on the top in a way that when the knife cuts through it the yellow liquid flows out. The other companion which joins the plate are the fried sausages. He sets the plates on the table along with a glass of grape juice. He takes his seat and fixes his gaze to the guest room door. The next minute his gaze averts and he looks away facing the opposite side when the door of the guest room opens. Scratching the back of his neck he steals a glance at Aiden who walks out the room.
Aiden sits opposite to Riley where the other plate is placed, licking her lips she takes a bite of the sandwich.
"Hmm," she hums as she chews the food and looks straight "Aren't you eating?," She asks which makes Riley to look straight facing her.
He moves his gaze down to her hand noticing her hand, where the bandage is removed "You removed it," he asks taking a sip of the grape juice.
Aiden nods in reply, licking her thumb she faces him again "The bandage is exaggerating," she chuckles softly "It was rolled around my knuckles, the thickness made my fingers unmovable," she explains dryly watching Riley, he nods and begins to eat.
"Thanks," she states grasping his attention, he looks straight immediately the corners of his lip spread ear to ear.
"No problem," he replies with the smile as it never leaves his face.
"How's your wound, does it still hurt?,"
"I'm doing great, yeah," he nods like talking to himself "fabulous," he blurts.
After breakfast Aiden does the dishes ordering Riley to leave it to her. Wiping her hands with the tissue she walks out the dining room and stops in her tracks when she notices Riley who walks out his room dressed up. She looks at him from to top to bottom, unusual of his presence in the outfit. He looks completely different with navy blue suit, it's buttoned up where only the top three buttons of the inner white shirt is visible along with blue tie.
"Let's leave," he flicks his finger excitedly.
"Where to?," Aiden asks dryly not showing any sense of surprise, she raises her brows questionably waiting till he answers.
"We are visiting a place," he claps suddenly making her lips spread unevenly, she looks with knitted brows baffled.
Inserting his hands in the trousers' pockets he continues "I'm officially starting to work from today, let's visit the prison and take over the case as the trial after a couple of days," he lifts his chin up in pride his orbs settled at the corner of his eyes viewing Aiden.
"Oh," Aiden clicks her tongue, scanning him one more time she walks to her room.
The car comes to an halt outside the large walls, getting out of the car they walk to the gate. Aiden turns to her right to see Riley who is already looking at her, he passes her an assuring smile and climbs the single stair where the small cabin is situated at the entrance by the end of the gate, one officer in there. He pulls out his attorney card from his suit's pocket and displays it to the officer, the card which was printed by his father when he first started to be an official lawyer and got to attend a trial.
Riley stands by the window watching outside at the non busy road. Adjusting the collar of his shirt he turns around and walks to the table which is the only furniture available in the grey room. He takes his seat beside Aiden his inner self puzzled feeling uneasy, he has to take responsibility from now onwards. Leaning forward he rests his elbows on the table and places his chin at back of his palm, the brows eyeballs moves to the left corner of his eyes glancing at Aiden. She stays relaxed unlike him, her eyes are glued to the door waiting till it opens, her arms crossed over her chest and her shoulders rested to the chair head.
"Tensed?," She breaks the silence abruptly, Riley faces her immediately as she averts her gaze to him as well.
"Yeah," Riley exhales as he rests his arms on the table and sits straight "I'm afraid if we lose the trial," his voice comes low, his mind focused to what would happen if he fails. He has been bothered since the beginning when he decided to become a lawyer again, his heart feeling heavy to assume that he cannot clear his father's name and to continue the hard work of his dad.
Mintz has been putting all his effort in the case of the AIM'S industry, it all began when an employee died due the inhaling of anonymous chemical which is added in the medicines, later from the results of his death report proved that he has been consuming the particles of an unknown drug. Mintz tried his best to bring justice to the worker's family, who was his client but he ended up losing the trial with no evidence and proof. Later from research he found out few other deaths of workers. His ultimate plan was to stop the distribution of the medication before the products are launched.
"You know," Aiden says "You sound exactly like your dad," she smiles as her mind replays the day when Mintz was worried about failure "It is okay to be worried about it," the corners of her lips slightly twitches up "But we will win," she states her voice stern and dry.
Riley looks at her for a while in silence, his eyes observing hers in a way like he is searching for something, he chuckles and utters "You are a typical kickass heroine," he sneers as he looks away from her.
The door of the room creeks open which makes both of them to look at the direction where the person they've waited for wanders in, his dull eyes watching them suspiciously, he strolls to the table dragging his left foot which was injured. He examines the two strangers from left to right and takes his seat opposite to them puzzled. Aiden remains quiet observing the situation.
"Hello," Riley stands from his seat leaning forward he hands over his card to the person opposite to him.
"Would you consider to change your lawyer, Mr Philips," he asks politely plastering a smile on his face.
Passing him a glance Philips reads the card, his eyebrows meet when his mind reads out the name "Mintz?," He looks straight facing Riley questionably.
"Yes," Riley nods "The person who was killed in the accident is my father," he declares calmly, Aiden looks at Riley and back at Philips.
Philips body stiffens when the words hit his ear drums, the air around tenses him of the current circumstances.
"We know that you didn't drive," Aiden interrupts noticing the change of expression as he dazed.
"What made you think so?," Philips asks in a low voice.
"Because I saw the driver," Aiden replies dryly as she moves forward "And I know that you didn't want to frame Mr Mintz about bribing, you were his client right?"
Philips stays silent for a second, his heart aching of betrayal "Yes," he nods and lowers his head "My son was murdered for writing an article about the scandal of lawyer Tira," he looks straight facing the two opposite to him, he knew that he shouldn't be telling them this but he couldn't hold back anymore as betray is more powerful than fear, taking a deep breath in he lets it out and continues "She works for the owner of the AIM'S."
"Tira," Riley repeats "Isn't she your lawyer?," He confirms.
"Yes, she is,"
"You know the boss," Riley questions anxiously as the chairman of the company is yet not revealed, even the workers have no idea of their boss, all the messages and orders are conveyed through the secretary, the one who knows everything.
"No, not many know about him,"
"Why did they frame you?," Riley's question comes instantly.
"I don't know but I declared in the court because my wife was held hostage," he lets out a sigh and continues "I'm sorry I cannot help because I should do this to keep her safe."
"Will you agree if I promise you to keep your wife safe?," Aiden moves forward again and continues "And we will get you out of here," she confirms.
"Will you?," Philips asks raising his brows his eyes in despair.
