Chapter 35
"Hamma Muhsin, you guys go somewhere else and flirt with each other, we're trying to watch here..." Hadiza lamented. "Who asked you to...." Salmah wasn't done with her sentence when she felt a sharp pain across her fair cheek. The slap was as loud as a clap and stung her face. She swiftly looked up and before she could utter a word, amira's hand cracked across her face again and the living room went silent.
All the ladies and men in the living room looked at amira with awe. "You slapped me?" She furiously stood up to revenge but muhsin held her hand. "How dare you try slapping my wife? Are you okay?" He thundered before he glared at amira. "Leave this place," he ordered. She hissed loudly and walked away. "She slapped me for no reason and you're telling me not to revenge, hamma muhsin? I did nothing to her and she slapped me, twice." Her voice cracked as she spoke. "She hissed at my mother earlier but none of us did anything to her. She was being rude to your mother, still you didn't do anything, now she slapped me and you're yelling at me?"
He looked at the preying eyes on him. They sat there looking at him in silence. They started to whisper to each other. He was now the centre of attention. He left the living room without a backward glance. He met her pacing around the room as she fumed with anger. "I never knew you were this insane...." He connected his hand with her cheek , snapping it back with the force of another smack on her other cheek.
When the black dots quit covering her vision, she stood up right holding both her aching cheek. her tears blurred her vision as she tried to look at him, baffled. "You slapped me, because of that stupid girl?"
"Insult any of my family again and I will do more than what I just did," he thundered moving closer to her, however she shifted back. His temper was on a hair-trigger. The smallest thing would have him flying into a rage, yelling, and spitting out each jagged word.
"My mother was speaking to you earlier to day but you were being rude her, I did not say anything to you. Salmah's mother was scolding you about what did to my mother but you hissed a her and walked away. Now you slapped her daughter, still you're wondering why I slapped you? What do you take yourself as, amira? You're very useless in my life, we both know that. You always disobey me but I leave you to that but now it has reached to the extent of disrespecting my mothers? No, I will not take this! The next time you will try something as dumb as what you did today, consider yourself as divorcee!" His holler reverberated in her ears like a clap of thunder, such was his rage. It was a roar of pure anger. He barged out of the room after he had finished talking.
She slumped down there, as she screamed in anger. She cried like her spirit needed to break loose from her skin, desperate to release an elemental rage on the world. Now they have bought themselves an unending war from her.
It was a big and memorable day for the two couple, Hadiza and Ahmad. The whole men were getting dressed for the wedding Fatiha which was going to take place at yola central mosque. The whole ladies of the house dressed in enticing laces while the men wore their white Kaftaans.
After they have taken lots of memorable pictures together, the men left for the Nikkah.
Aunty sauntered into the room holding a plate of toasts and roasted chicken while she held a cup of hot tea in her other hand. "Dalia come and eat now please, it's already passed twelve and you haven't eaten much." She kept the plate on the side drawer and helped her to sit up. She was the only in the room. Fauzah and the rest were out taking pictures and helping the bride with the preparation before the knot gets tied.
"Or do you want something else?" Muhsin's mother asked. She slowly shook her head as she smiled a lit. "Thank you, aunty," she mouthed. Aunty returned a smile, "now eat before I come back. You need to take your drugs afterwards." She left dalia after she had started eating her brunch.
Salmah looked at her cousins again while she thought of their insane plan. She was still angry about what amira had done to her and how muhsin ignored it. "How can we do that when mommy and the rest are busy walking around the house?" She asked and fauzah quickly spoke. "They're all downstairs and soon everyone would head outside before the wedding Fatiha. You'll start going to her room then I will follow you, then Sadiya and the rest."
Salmah nodded as she smiled brightly. They all left the gazebo and headed back into the house. Salmah started walking towards amira's room and few moments later the rest followed her as they planned.
Amira raised her head when she heard the door squeaked open and close. She hissed and returned her attention to her phone. Even though deep within she was afraid of what Salmah was doing in her room, she still acted like she never cared or she wasn't afraid. Her stomach churned as she felt chills down her spine when she saw the rest of Muhsin's cousins barged into the room. They all sent daggers her way. Her mouth trembled as she spoke.
