Chapter 12: The King’s Debt
'Beta Aleron, I have a task for you," King Ileus began, his voice firm yet thoughtful as he paced the grand hall. His silver cloak trailed behind him, shimmering in the sunlight streaming through the tall windows. 'You must go to the village on the outskirts of the city. There's a woman there, she saved my life. Her name is Rieka. She lives alone in a small cottage, surrounded by dense woods."
Aleron bowed, his hand resting on the hilt of his sword. 'Your Majesty, I will find her and bring her to you. But why this urgency?"
Illeus stopped pacing and turned to his trusted beta. 'She risked her life to save mine when no one else dared. I owe her a debt I cannot ignore. Go now. Convince her to come, no matter what it takes."
Aleron nodded. 'As you command, my King."
The village was quiet when Aleron arrived, the scent of freshly tilled earth and wood smoke lingering in the air. Children played by the riverbank, their laughter mingling with the rustling leaves. Aleron's sharp eyes scanned the area until they landed on a small, weathered cottage at the edge of the woods.
He approached the door, his boots crunching on the gravel path. Knocking firmly, he waited. The door creaked open, revealing a young woman with piercing green eyes and auburn hair tied loosely behind her head. She was dressed simply, yet there was an air of quiet strength about her.
'You must be Rieka," Aleron said, his deep voice cutting through the stillness.
Rieka's eyes narrowed. 'Who's asking?"
'I am Beta Aleron, sent by King Ileus. He requests your presence at the castle."
Rieka's face darkened, her grip tightening on the edge of the door. 'I don't think that's a good idea. Tell your king I appreciate his gratitude, but I prefer to remain here."
Aleron sighed. He had anticipated resistance. 'Rieka, the king owes you his life. He simply wishes to repay you, to offer you whatever you desire. This is not a request I can deliver lightly."
'I know exactly what he'll ask," Rieka said, crossing her arms. 'He'll want me to make a request. And I'll be expected to name something grand, something that will entangle me further in his world. I don't want it. I want my peace."
Aleron's expression softened. 'You saved the king when no one else dared. Don't you think it's only fair that he has the chance to thank you properly?"
Rieka hesitated, her eyes darting to the dense woods beyond her cottage. The trees swayed gently, whispering secrets she wished she could escape to. She exhaled sharply. 'I'll come," she said reluctantly. 'But I'm not making any requests today. And after this, I'm going home."
Aleron nodded, satisfied. 'Very well. Shall we leave now?"
Rieka grabbed her shawl, her movements sharp and deliberate. 'Let's get this over with."
The grand hall of the castle was intimidating, its high ceilings adorned with intricate carvings and banners bearing the royal crest. Rieka walked beside Aleron, her steps measured but hesitant. Her gaze flickered over the opulent surroundings, but her expression remained guarded.
King Illeus stood at the far end of the hall, his tall frame imposing yet regal. His dark hair was swept back, and his piercing blue eyes softened as they landed on Rieka. He stepped forward, a warm smile breaking the tension in the room.
'Rieka," he greeted, his voice filled with genuine gratitude. 'You came."
Rieka inclined her head slightly. 'Your Majesty."
Ileus gestured for her to step closer. 'I owe you my life, Rieka. Without your bravery, I would not be standing here today. For that, I am forever in your debt. Please, name anything you desire. Wealth, land, protection, it is yours."
Rieka looked up at him, her green eyes sharp and unwavering. 'I don't want anything, Your Majesty."
Illeus blinked, surprised. 'Nothing at all? Surely, there must be something I can do to repay you."
'I ask only to return to my home," Rieka replied firmly. 'Give me time to think about your offer. If I decide there is something I need, I will let you know."
The king studied her, his expression thoughtful. 'You are a curious one, Rieka. Most would seize such an opportunity without hesitation."
'I'm not most people," she said simply. 'And I don't make decisions lightly."
Ileus chuckled softly. 'Very well. Take your time. But know that my offer will always stand. You are welcome here whenever you choose."
Rieka inclined her head once more. 'Thank you, Your Majesty."
The journey back to the village was quiet, Aleron walking beside Rieka as they left the castle gates behind. The setting sun bathed the land in hues of gold and crimson, casting long shadows across the road.
'You handled yourself well in there," Aleron said, breaking the silence.
Rieka glanced at him. 'I've learned how to navigate such situations. It's best not to get too involved."
'And yet, you're already involved," Aleron pointed out. 'You saved the king's life. That's no small thing."
'Perhaps," Rieka replied, her voice tinged with weariness. 'But I'd rather not let it change my life any more than it already has."
Aleron nodded, respecting her resolve. 'If you ever need anything, know that the king and I are here for you."
Rieka's lips twitched into a faint smile. 'I'll keep that in mind."

As the lights of her cottage came into view, Rieka felt a weight lift from her shoulders. She turned to Aleron. 'Thank you for accompanying me."
'It was my duty," he said with a slight bow. 'Stay safe, Rieka."
She watched as he disappeared down the path, the sound of his footsteps fading into the night. The forest seemed to sigh around her, welcoming her back with its familiar embrace.
Inside her cottage, Rieka sat by the fire, her thoughts racing. The king's offer lingered in her mind, a question unanswered. What could she possibly ask for? What could she truly want that wouldn't come with strings attached?
Her fingers traced the edge of a small wooden carving on the table, a gift from her late father. His voice echoed in her memory, a quiet reassurance that she would always find her way.
Rieka exhaled deeply, staring into the flames. 'What have I gotten myself into?" she murmured.
Far away, in the castle, King Ileus stood by the window of his chambers, gazing out at the distant woods. 'She's different," he said quietly, almost to himself.
Aleron, standing nearby, nodded. 'She is. And she doesn't trust me easily."
'Nor should she," Ileus replied. 'But I have a feeling her story isn't finished yet."
As the moon rose high in the sky, its silver light spilling across the land, Rieka lay awake in her small bed. Unbeknownst to her, shadows were stirring in the forest, their movements silent but deliberate.
And at the heart of the castle, Illeus's thoughts lingered on the young woman who had saved his life, the one who refused to ask for anything in return.
A distant howl echoed through the woods, low and haunting. Rieka sat up abruptly, her heart pounding. Something or someone was out there, watching her cottage. The shadows pressed closer, and a faint voice whispered her name.'Rieka..."
