Chapter 42: Rise of the Queen
Alpha Lleus strided confidently down the corridors with a proud gleam in his eye. Events of the last few days crystallized something deep inside of him-Rieka wasn't only his wife; she was his equal, a woman worthy of power as much as protection.
The man stood in the throne room floor before a filled assembly of high-ranking officials and other counsel.
His voice boomed through the chamber, and he said, "Queen Rieka, from henceforth on, shall have complete dominion over the affairs in and regarding this palace. Her decisions and decrees are to bear my weight.
There was a murmur of surprise among the people, but no one had the guts to oppose him. Rieka stood by his side, poised in expression, her mind reeling with the pride of her suddenly earned right.
Later, when they were alone in their chambers, Lleus looked at her with admiration. "Rieka, you've proven yourself time and again. I don't doubt you in the least. This palace, this kingdom-they're as much yours as they are mine."
Rieka smiled, "You honor me, my king. I will do all in my power to make certain I am worthy of this trust.
The next morning, the palace was alive with action as Rieka's new detail of bodyguards was assembled. Before her stood five of the strongest warriors in the kingdom; their polished armor glittered in the sunlight that flowed in through the high windows.
Lleus gestured proudly toward them. "These are the best I have to offer, Rieka. Each one has sworn an oath to protect you with his life."
Rieka nodded, her gaze sharp as she assessed each of them. "Thank you, my king. And thank you, gentlemen, for your service. I trust you will not let me down."
The leader of the group, a tall man with a scar running across his cheek, stepped forward and bowed. "We are at your command, my queen. Wherever you go, we will follow."
A faint smile twisted the corners of Rieka's lips. "Good. Then let us begin."
---
Days quickly slipped by, and she swiftly settled into her role. Surprising even herself, Rieka commanded attention without flinching. She tightened protocol and staff in the palace down, working towards smooth operation. She also held council, listening to common folk about whatever ills plagued them; within days, a sea of faces filled her throne room.
One afternoon, as she strolled through the palace gardens, surrounded by her two bodyguards, she came upon two maids whispering.
"Have you seen how the queen controls the room? She's nothing like those before her," one whispered.
"Yeah," the other answered. "The king has finally found his match."
Rieka permitted a small, satisfied smile to cross her lips. They were coming around.
---
Yet not all were happy over Rieka's meteoric rise to power.
Lleus sat behind his desk, a glass of wine in his hand, during a private meeting with his most trusted advisor, General Kael.
"Your Majesty," Kael began cautiously, "forgive me, but do you think it wise to grant the queen such authority? Some of the nobles are growing uneasy."
Lleus's expression darkened. "Are you questioning my judgment, Kael?"
The general bowed his head quickly. "Never, my king. I only wish to advise caution. Power can change people."
Lleus leaned back in his chair, a faint smirk playing on his lips. "Rieka is different, Kael. She's not like the others. She has ambition, yes, but it is driven by a desire to strengthen this kingdom, not undermine it."
Kael hesitated. "As you say, my king."
But even as the words left his mouth, the doubt was there.
That evening, Rieka dined alone in the vast dining hall, taking small bites. The flickering light of the candles danced on the elaborately carved walls, an atmosphere of serenity, yet her mind was not still.
But the tiniest problem with her newfound power proved to be Alpha Lleus himself. His sincerity and the building trust had started chipping away at her resolve. For the first time, she felt doubt about her plan.
"Lost in thought, my queen?"
Rieka looked up to see Lleus standing in the doorway, a playful smile on his face.
"Just reflecting," she said, motioning for him to join her.
He sat beside her, taking her hand. "You've done more in a week than most queens accomplish in a year. I couldn't be prouder."
She smiled, though it didn't quite reach her eyes. "You've given me the freedom to act. That's more than most women in my position can say."
Lleus leaned closer, his voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper. "And I'll give you even more, Rieka. Together we'll build a legacy that will be remembered for generations."
Her heart twisted at the words. He truly did believe in her, saw her as his equal. The thought should have pleased her, but instead, it left her feeling exposed.
As Rieka was getting ready for bed, with her bodyguards outside the door, a light knock interrupted her routine.
"Enter," she called, expecting one of the servants.
It was General Kael instead.
"Queen Rieka," he said, inclining his head. "May I have a word?"
She nodded, gesturing for him to speak.
Kael hesitated, his expression grim. "Forgive my intrusion, but I must warn you. Not everyone in the palace is as for you as the king."
Rieka raised an eyebrow. "And why are you telling me this?"
"Because," he said, stepping closer, "I believe you have the potential to bring great change to this kingdom. But power makes enemies, my queen. You must tread carefully."
She studied him for a long moment, her mind racing. Kael's words were both a warning and an opportunity. If there were those who opposed her, she needed to root them out. But she also needed allies—people she could trust, or at least manipulate.
"Thank you for your honesty, General," she said finally. "I will take your words under advisement."
Kael nodded, his expression unreadable. "Good night, my queen."
As he left, Rieka stood by the window, staring out at the moonlit gardens below. She was playing a dangerous game, and the stakes were higher than ever.
But one thing was certain: she wouldn't back down.
The rise of Queen Rieka had only just begun.
