Chapter 14: For Revenge
Rieka sat at the small table in her kitchen, her hands wrapped tightly around a cup of herbal tea. She had hardly slept, her mind plagued with visions of her past life and the dark shadows of betrayal that had led to her untimely end.
Her chest constricted with the memory of Riftan's visit the night before and the rustling outside her door after he had gone. Memories and the present were colliding in a way that left her disoriented and terrified.
This cannot happen again," she whispered, her voice determinate. She clenched her fists, her eyes ablaze with determination. "If I don't act now, history will repeat itself. But this time, I will be in control.
Rieka knew exactly what she had to do. The king's offer was her chance-not just to save herself, but to avenge the life taken away from her. She would use her request to secure a position of power to make sure those who had wronged her paid for their sins.
She stood from her seat, her actions with a purpose. She took her cloak with her and set off toward the village bakery where Philip and Grandma Lily were normally busy in the morning hours.
The bakery was warm, filled with scents of freshly baked bread. Philip, a stout and cheerful man in his fifties, was kneading dough behind the counter. Grandma Lily was arranging loaves on a shelf, wiry of build, her face kind but her eyes sharp. They looked up as Rieka entered, their smiles dying as they took in the grim determination on her face.
Rieka, dear, is everything all right?" Grandma Lily asked, wiping her flour-covered hands on her apron.
"I need to speak with you both," Rieka said, even-toned, her cloak billowing slightly behind her as she approached the counter.
Philip exchanged a concerned glance with Grandma Lily. "What's happened?
"I have decided," Rieka started, her green eyes sparkling with firmness. "I am going to see the king. I'm going to make my request."
Grandma Lily frowned. "Are you sure about this? You've been so unsettled since his beta came to fetch you. What's changed?
"I've thought it over," Rieka said. "If I don't seize the opportunity, then my past will eventually catch up with me, and that is something which I will not permit. It's my chance to break free, to safeguard myself."
Philip didn't lower his hands from the dough. "And what will you request? Riches? Land?
Rieka took a deep breath, steeling herself. 'I'm going to ask to be his wife."
The words hung in the air like a thunderclap. Grandma Lily's eyes widened, and Philip dropped the dough he was working on.
'His wife?" Grandma Lily echoed, her voice a mixture of shock and disbelief.
"Yes," Rieka said firmly. "As his wife, I will have power. No one will dare touch me. And I'll finally have the means to bring justice to those who wronged me."
Philip shook his head, his face pale. "Rieka, do you know what you're saying? Marrying the king is no small thing. You'll be thrust into a world of politics and danger."
"I know," Rieka said. "But I have lived through danger before. This time, I'll be ready."
Grandma Lily reached across the counter, taking Rieka's hand in her own. "If it is truly what you want, we will not stop you. But promise me you will be careful."
"I promise," Rieka replied, her voice softening. She squeezed Grandma Lily's hand before stepping back. "Thanks for all your help, you two. You have been like family to me. But now I really must do this."
Philip nodded reluctantly. "Go with caution, Rieka. And may fate be kinder to you this time."
Rieka's heart pounded in her chest as she approached the gates of the king's fortress. The huge structure loomed ahead, its stone walls imposing and unyielding. Two soldiers stood guard at its entrance, their armor gleaming in the sun.
"Halt," one commanded as she neared. "State your business."
"I am here to see the king," Rieka said, her voice steady. "Tell Beta Aleron that Rieka has arrived.
The guards exchanged a glance before one of them nodded and disappeared inside. Moments later, Beta Aleron emerged, his sharp eyes scanning her from head to toe.
'You've returned," he said, his tone neutral but curious.
'Yes," Rieka replied. 'Take me to the king."
Aleron studied her for a moment before nodding. 'Follow me."
The walk through the fortress was both daunting and awe-inspiring: grand halls with tapestries and banners, the air thick with the scent of polished wood and stone. As they reached the throne room, Rieka's pulse quickened.
The king sat upon his throne, his presence in command of the room. Recognition lit his eyes as Aleron announced her.
Rieka," he said, his deep voice echoing in the room. "You've come back. Have you come to make your request?"
Rieka stepped forward and raised her chin high. "Yes, Your Majesty."
The king inclined forward with an expression half curious, half expectant. "Then speak. What is it you want?"
Taking a resolute breath, Rieka met his eyes. "I wish to be your wife.
A murmur ran around the room, guards and attendants exchanging astounded glances. The king's eyebrows shot up, but he said nothing a moment, his eyes seeking hers.
"You ask for much," he said finally, his tone contemplative. "Becoming queen is no small matter. Why do you wish for this?
She did not back down, her tone even. "Because I am able to serve you well, my king. I can be your ally, your confidant. And as your wife, I can make certain of the strength of your reign."
The king regarded her, his face unreadable. After a long pause, he nodded. "Very well. I will take your request to my council. If they agree, you shall be my queen."
The council meeting was short, and while several voiced disapproval, it was quieted under the king's authority. The decision had been made by day's end.
Rieka stood again in the throne room, the weight of what had been decided settling over her. The king approached her, his expression resolute.
"It is done," he said. "You will be my wife.
Rieka inclined her head, her heart racing. "Thank you, Your Majesty."
