Chapter 43: Shadows in the Light
Rieka, wrapped in a silken nightgown, sat by the window, staring out into the gardens. She had spent many nights planning her take over but tonight, something was amiss-something like a thread in her perfectly woven tapestry was starting to fray.
Her bodyguards stood vigilantly outside her chambers. But in the quiet of the night, a loud knock resounded against the heavy doors.
One of the guards peered inside. "My queen, the Alpha has summoned you to the war council chamber. He says it's urgent."
Rieka frowned; this was an unexpected summons. "At this hour? What's the matter?
The guard shifted uneasily. "I'm not sure, my queen. He mentioned… a threat to the kingdom."
Her pulse quickened. Lleus rarely called for her so suddenly. Something significant must have happened.
---
The war council chamber was dimly lit, its long table adorned with maps and glowing lanterns. Alpha Lleus stood at the head, his face grim. Beside him was General Kael, his usual stoic demeanor replaced by an air of unease. A handful of advisors murmured among themselves, their voices hushed.
"Rieka," Lleus said as she entered, his voice heavy. "You're here. Good."
"What's happened?" she asked, stepping closer.
He gestured to a chair beside him. "Disturbing news has reached us. An assassin was caught trying to gain entrance through the palace gates tonight."
Her brow furrowed. "An assassin? Under whose commission?"
Kael cleared his throat, his voice slicing the tension. "We interrogated him. He refused to speak, but he carried a dagger engraved with the crest of a rival pack."
Rieka went rigid. The nuances of werewolf politics were treacherous, but the audacity of such an action was unparalleled. "What rival pack would be brazen enough?"
Lleus shook his head, fists clenched. "That's what we must find out. But that is not all. The assassin was not only after me, he mentioned you, Rieka."
Her breath caught. "Me? Why would anyone target me?"
Kael stepped forward, his voice low. "That's what we're trying to uncover, my queen. But it seems your rise to power has stirred unease beyond these walls."
Rieka's mind raced. Could this be the work of those in the palace who resented her? Or was it something more sinister?
Lleus leaned forward to take her hand, his hand warm against the tension coiling in the room. "I won't let anything happen to you, Rieka. I'll increase your guards and personally look into the threat."
She nodded as she hid her rising discomfort. "Thank you, Lleus. You have always protected me."
However, deep inside, this was more than a random attack: somebody knew her secrets-or was getting uncomfortably close.
Later that night, Rieka returned to her chambers, her mind spinning. The palace felt different now, its grandeur tinged with an invisible menace. She dismissed her maids and sat alone by the fireplace, her thoughts churning.
The assassin had mentioned her. Why? Had someone uncovered her true intentions?
As the flames crackled, a shadow flickered across the room.
"You're troubled, my queen," a deep voice murmured.
Rieka's head jerked toward him, her heart leaping in surprise. In the shadowy darkness of her quarters, standing in the corner of her room, was Kael.
"General," she started to say roughly, automatically laying her hand on the dagger sheathed beneath her robe. "What are you doing here?"
Kael walked forward, very deliberately placing one foot after the other. "Forgive the intrusion, but I needed to speak with you alone."
She frowned. "About what?"
He hesitated, then said, "The assassin wasn't sent by a rival pack."
Her blood ran cold. "What do you mean?"
Kael leaned closer, his voice barely above a whisper. "He was sent by someone within the palace. Someone who wants to see you fall."
Rieka's heart pounded. "Do you have proof?"
Kael nodded. "Before he died, he whispered a name. One of the king's closest advisors."
"Who?"
Kael's gaze was unwavering. "Advisor Alric."
Rieka's jaw clenched. Alric was one of the oldest, most respected members of Lleus's council-a man of influence and connections.
"If this is true," she said, her voice even, "then Alric plays a dangerous game."
Kael's face darkened. "He sees you as a threat, my queen. And he is not alone."
---
Next morning, Rieka did not waste any time. She requested a private meeting with Lleus, determined to expose Alric's betrayal.
In the king's private study, Lleus listened intently as she related Kael's revelation.
"Alric?" Lleus said, his brows furrowed. "He's been loyal for years. Why would he do this?"
Rieka leaned forward, her voice firm. "Because he fears change. My presence has disrupted the status quo. Men like Alric thrive on stability and control."
Lleus sighed, running a hand through his hair. "If what you say is true, then I can't ignore it. But I need proof before I act."
"Then let me handle it," Rieka said, her eyes gleaming. "I'll find the evidence we need."
Lleus hesitated, then nodded. "Be careful, Rieka. I can't lose you."
---
Under the light of night, Rieka set her plan in motion. She had Kael help her plant a forged letter in Alric's chambers that implicated him in a plot to overthrow the king. By morning, the letter was found by one of Lleus's guards, who delivered the finding directly to the Alpha.
Instant chaos broke out in the palace as Alric was hauled before the king.
"This is a lie!" Alric shouted, his face flushed with anger. "I would never betray you, my king!"
But the evidence was compelling. The letter detailed meetings with rival packs and plans to assassinate both Lleus and Rieka.
Lleus's eyes blazed with fury. "How dare you conspire against your own king?"
"Innocent, I swear!" Alric pleaded.
Rieka stepped forward, her face calm but cold. "The evidence speaks for itself, Alric. You've betrayed the crown."
Lleus raised a hand, silencing the room. "Take him away. He'll face trial for treason."
As Alric was dragged out, his gaze locked on Rieka.
"This isn't over," he hissed.
She met his glare with a faint smile. "Oh, I think it is.
