Chapter 25: Betrayal at Dawn
Adriana rode her midnight-black stallion to the rival pack's borders, in anger. The pale light of the moon shone down on the heavy growth of the forest. She was done with alpha lleus
She was stopped by One of the rival pack members.
One of them, a towering man with a scar running down his left cheek, stepped forward. 'You dare approach the borders of Alpha Kieran's territory?" His voice was laced with suspicion and authority.
Adriana dismounted gracefully, her bloodied cape fluttering behind her. She raised her hands in a gesture of surrender. 'I've come to join your pack," she announced firmly, her piercing gaze locking onto his.
The man's eyes widened briefly before he regained himself. "Why would a man such as yourself—a most trusted warrior of King Ileus—betray him and come to us?
Adriana threw her chin upwards, defiance laced across her features. "I am done with Ileus Finnair. He's chosen a weak Luna over me, cast me aside after everything I've done for him and his pack. If loyalty is rewarded with disregard, then I have no reason to stay."
The warrior regarded her a moment before he turned and gestured another guard forward. "Take her to Alpha Kieran.
Alpha Kieran's quarters were stark and intimidating, much like the man himself. At the head of the long table, he sat and commanded presence. His dark eyes gleamed with curiosity as Adriana was brought before him.
"So, Adriana," Kieran began smoothly, though with a steely edge to his tone. "You've chosen to defect. Why should I believe you won't betray me as well?
Adriana met his gaze unflinchingly. "Because I have no love left for King Ileus. I want to see his pack fall, and I believe your strength can make that happen."
Kieran leaned back in his chair, studying her intently. "A convincing story, but words mean little here. If you want to stay, you'll have to prove your loyalty.
"And how do you propose I do that?" she asked, her voice steady.
"You'll start at the bottom," Kieran replied, gesturing for a subordinate to step forward. "You'll train with my warriors, follow orders, and show me you're more than just talk. If you survive, we'll discuss your position in my pack."
Adriana nodded, her face impassive. "I accept your terms."
Kieran smirked. 'Good. Let's see if you're as formidable as they say."
---
Adriana was escorted to the warriors' quarters, a cold, utilitarian building that smelled of sweat and steel. The rooms were sparse, with narrow beds and minimal furnishings. She was led to a small chamber at the end of the hall, where the guard dropped her bag unceremoniously on the floor.
"This will be your room," he grumbled. "Training starts at dawn. Don't be late."
As the door closed behind him, Adriana let out a deep breath, her shoulders easing for the first time that night. She sat on the edge of the bed, her mind racing with thoughts of what she had just committed to.
Before she could dwell too long, a familiar voice echoed in her mind.
"Adriana."
Her eyes widened slightly. Kael.
"Where are you?" His voice was strained, almost imploring.
Adriana closed her eyes and focused on the psychic link. "I'm taking a break, Kael. I needed to get away from the madness."
"That's not an answer," Kael urged. "Tell me where you are. We need to talk."
Adriana wavered. Her loyalty was to Kael, and yet she had this mission now. Finally, she gave in. "Alright. I'll see you tomorrow night, at the old ruins near the northern pass."
"Adriana," Kael's voice turned soft. "I just want to understand what's going on. Don't shut me out."
"We'll talk," she promised, cutting off the transmission before he could press his advantage.
Adriana leaned back against the wall, her jaw tightening. She couldn't afford to let Kael-or anyone else from Ileus's pack-discover her true intentions. She was here for a reason, and she wouldn't let sentimentality ruin her plans.

As the hours passed, Adriana lay on the narrow bed, staring at the cracked ceiling. Memories of her time in King Ileus's pack flooded her mind: the countless battles she had fought, the sacrifices she had made, the moments she had stood by his side. And for what? To be discarded like a broken weapon?
Her fists clenched. 'I'll make him regret it," she muttered under her breath.
The next morning, she was training with the warriors of the rival pack: sparring, running drills until her muscles burned. Although she was placed with the lowest-ranking soldiers, she carried herself with the grace and precision of a seasoned warrior.
The other warriors watched her warily, some openly hostile, others intrigued by her presence. Adriana ignored them all, focusing on her task. She needed to earn Kieran's trust, and that meant playing her part perfectly.

That evening, as Adriana returned to her room, she overheard a conversation between two warriors in the corridor.
"Did you see her in the sparring ring today?" one of them said. "She's good, no question about it."
"Good, but volatile," the other said. "I don't trust her. She may be spying for Ileus."
Adriana smiled wryly to herself as she entered her room. Let them doubt me. It'll only make it all that sweeter when I prove them wrong.
As she sat on the bed, she felt the faintest tug of unease. Kael's words lingered in her mind, a reminder of the life she had left behind. But she pushed the thoughts aside. She couldn't afford to waver now.

Late that night, Adriana stood by the window, looking out toward the rival pack's territory. The moon was high, casting a ghostly glow over the trees. Her reverie was broken by a knock on the door.
"Come in," she said.
One of Kieran's men entered, his face impassive. "Alpha Kieran wants to see you.
Adriana followed him to the main hall, where Kieran awaited her. His eyes were keen; his whole bearing was forbidding.
"I have a task for you," he said without any preliminaries. "If you succeed, it will prove your loyalty beyond doubt."
"What kind of task?" Adriana asked, being cautious.
Kieran's lips curled into a predatory smile. "There's a supply caravan from Ileus's pack traveling through the northern pass tomorrow. I want you to lead the raid."
Adriana's heart quickened, though her face remained impassive. This was her chance to prove herself-or to gather valuable information for her revenge.
"I'll do it," she said firmly.
Kieran nodded, his smile broadening. "Good. Let's see if you're as committed as you claim.
