Chapter 058
~~~Hailey~~~
As I lay in the hospital bed, cradling my newborn baby in my arms, I couldn't help but feel a mix of emotions swirling inside me. The warmth of my baby's tiny hands and the gentle rise and fall of their chest as they breathed filled me with an overwhelming sense of love and gratitude. But alongside these positive emotions, a nagging sense of guilt and anxiety gnawed at my heart.
My mind wandered back to the whirlwind of events that had led me to this moment. The chance encounter with Aiden, the one-night stand that had changed everything, and his subsequent disappearance only to reappear just in time to save my life. It all felt like fate, but fate had also dealt us a cruel hand. Aiden had disappeared again, and this time, it seemed like something was terribly wrong.
Four days had passed since his disappearance, and the police and his father were working tirelessly to find him. I could see the worry etched on his father's face, the stress and fear that seemed to weigh him down. And I knew that I was the cause of it all. Ever since I had entered their lives, I had brought nothing but trouble. The incident in Germany, Aiden's lost focus at work, and now his kidnapping – it was all my fault.
A wave of shame and regret washed over me, threatening to engulf me. I felt like I was drowning in a sea of guilt, unable to escape the weight of my responsibility. It would be better for everyone if I just left, took my baby and disappeared. Aiden had done so much for me already; it was time for me to return the favor. But the thought of leaving him, of abandoning him when he needed me most, filled me with a deep sadness.
As I wrestled with my emotions, a voice in my head whispered words of caution. "But it's his baby too, Hailey. He has equal rights to the child as you do." I felt a surge of determination through me. I would do whatever it took to protect my baby, even if it meant keeping the truth from Aiden.
But fate had other plans. As I paced back and forth in my room, trying to gather the courage to tell Aiden about my decision, he appeared at my doorstep with a group of guards. His father's efforts had finally paid off, and Aiden was safe. But my relief was short-lived.
Aiden's eyes locked onto mine, and I saw a flicker of knowledge there. He knew. He knew that he was the father of my child. My mind flashed back to the drive I had received in the envelope, the one I had never gotten around to checking. It seemed that Aiden had found it, and now he knew the truth.
A mix of emotions swirled inside me – fear, anxiety, and a hint of relief. I knew that I had to face Aiden, to confront the consequences of my actions. But as I looked into his eyes, I saw something there that gave me pause. Something that made me wonder if I had misjudged him all along.
Aiden's eyes blazed with a fierce determination as he grasped my shoulders, his fingers digging gently into my skin. "Hailey, you can't give up now," he urged, his voice low and husky. "We're so close to uncovering the truth. I can feel it."
Tears streamed down my face, hot and unchecked, as I shook my head. "I don't think I can do this, Aiden," I whispered, my voice cracking with exhaustion. "I'm so tired. I feel like I'm drowning in all of this."
Aiden's expression turned fierce, his jaw clenched in anger. "You think I'm not tired?" he spat, his eyes flashing with indignation. "I was almost killed, Hailey. Sandra nearly took my life. And you know why?"
I shook my head, feeling a chill run down my spine.
Aiden's voice dropped to a whisper, his words dripping with venom. "It's all because of you, Hailey. She's obsessed with me, and when you entered my life, she snapped. She planned her own kidnapping with some scarred man, just to get to me."
Aiden's eyes welled up with tears, his voice cracking with emotion. "Do you know what she said to me?" he asked, his words barely above a whisper. "She offered me a chance to escape with her, to leave all this behind. But do you know what I told her?"
I shook my head, feeling a sense of unease.
Aiden's face contorted in anguish, his eyes blazing with intensity. "I told her I'd rather die than go anywhere with her," he spat, his voice dripping with disgust.
Aiden's eyes locked onto mine, filled with a deep sincerity. "Hailey, I had the chance to run," he whispered, his voice filled with emotion. "But I came back. I came back for you, for our baby."
I trembled, my heart racing with emotion. "Why?" I whispered, feeling a sense of wonder.
Aiden's face contorted in anguish, his eyes blazing with intensity. "Why?" he repeated, his voice cracking with emotion. 'Really Hailey, you want to know why?" He fired back at me.
'Why, is because I love you Hailey, that's why." He said his voice calm and collected as I stared at him in shock, 'but…. B…"
"I know this isn't supposed to happen," he interrupted 'but I couldn't control myself anymore, Hailey," Aiden said, his voice calm and reassuring. "I love you so much, and I promise you, I won't let any harm come to you. Please, just stay, and we'll work this out together."
My heart sank, torn between different emotions. I had fallen deeply in love with Aiden, but that was precisely why I had made the decision to leave in the first place – to keep him safe. My mind was a jumble of conflicting thoughts, and I couldn't muster the words to respond.
I muttered incoherently under my breath, confusion etched on my face as I retreated to my room, ignoring Aiden's calls. My mind was overwhelmed with too much information, and I struggled to process it all.
Was it the fact that Aiden's ex-girlfriend had become his rival that unsettled me? Or was it Aiden's declaration of love, which had left me breathless? Perhaps it was the knowledge that he was willing to embark on this perilous journey with me, despite the unknown dangers that lay ahead.
As I entered my room, my gaze fell upon a familiar object – another envelope, lying on my bed. I stared at it, wondering what message it carried this time, my heart heavy.
I approached my bed cautiously, my hands trembling as I picked up the envelope. I hesitated for a moment before opening it, my heart racing with anticipation. The note inside read: "Ask Mr. Lover boy what he was really doing the day he saved you from the accident."
This time, the handwriting was different from the previous notes. A shiver ran down my spine as I felt a sense of unease. I glanced towards my balcony, and my eyes widened as I saw a shadowy figure lurking in the darkness.
I rushed towards the balcony, my heart pounding in my chest. The figure, dressed in all black with a mask covering their face, was attempting to jump off. "Who are you?" I demanded, trying to keep my voice steady.
The figure paused, turning towards me. "He's right, Hailey, you're very close," they said, before leaping off the balcony and disappearing into the night.
I stood there, frozen in confusion, my mind reeling with questions. Who was this mysterious figure? What did they mean by their cryptic message? And what did Aiden have to do with it all?
"Why does everything seem to get more and more complicated?" I screamed, my voice echoing through the night, shattering the silence. The sound of my own desperation hung in the air, a stark reminder of the chaos that had consumed my life. I felt like I was drowning in a sea of secrets and lies.
"With all of this, I don't even know who to trust anymore," I whispered, my voice trembling as my knees buckled beneath me. I collapsed to the floor, overcome with emotion, and sobbed uncontrollably. The world around me seemed to be spinning out of control, and I felt like I was losing my grip on reality. Tears streamed down my face as I cried out in frustration and despair, feeling utterly alone and vulnerable.
