Chapter 064
~~~Hailey~~~
I stood frozen, my eyes locked on the man before me. He gestured for me to follow him, his voice low and mysterious. "We need to have a little chat, Chickadee." The nickname sent a shiver down my spine, a nickname only my dad had ever called me.
At first, I hesitated, unsure if I should trust this stranger. But as I glanced at Damien, calm in his arms, I knew I had to take the risk. Aiden tried to stop me, but I shook my head, my voice firm. "Save your mom, Aiden. I'll be fine."
The man led me to a luxurious chamber, the walls adorned with lavish artwork. He poured me a drink, but I hesitated, unsure if I should accept anything from him.
"Come on, Chickadee," he said with a warm smile. "You don't think I'd poison you, do you?" His eyes sparkled with amusement, and I felt a lump form in my throat.
Tears welled up in my eyes as I searched his face, and suddenly, I knew. This man, with the same piercing eyes and gentle smile, was my father.
"Dad?" I whispered, my voice trembling. I felt like I'd been punched in the gut, my emotions swirling in a mix of shock, joy, and relief.
I gently took Damien from him and placed him on the couch, my eyes never leaving my father's face. I threw myself into his arms, tears streaming down my face.
"Dad, I'm so sorry," I sobbed, my words tumbling out in a rush. "I looked everywhere for you, but they told me you were dead. I wanted to apologize for not listening to you, for trusting Evans. He betrayed me, Dad, just like you said he would. I'm so sorry."
My father's arms wrapped around me, holding me close as I cried. His voice was low and soothing, his words a gentle whisper in my ear. "Shh, Chickadee. I'm here now. I've always been with you, even when you couldn't see me."
As I held him tight, I felt a weight lift off my shoulders, a sense of peace and closure that I'd been searching for my entire life.
My father's expression turned cold, his eyes glinting with a menacing intensity. "It's okay, my child, but now is not the time for tears. What we should be focusing on is how to take down those scumbags."
I felt a shiver run down my spine as I pulled back from his embrace. "What?" I whispered, my voice laced with confusion and concern.
He nodded, his jaw clenched in determination. "Yes, Chickadee. The Brooklyns are not your family. They've been manipulating you, using you for their own gain. From your accident to the present day, they've been pulling the strings."
I shook my head, feeling a wave of uncertainty wash over me. "Dad, you can't just show up after five years and expect me to turn against the people who've been taking care of me. They may have kept secrets from me, but they've also been kind to me."
My father's eyes narrowed, his voice taking on a sinister tone. "And how sure are you that they're not still keeping secrets from you, Chickadee?"
I frowned, feeling a sense of unease creeping over me. "What do you mean?"
He leaned in, his voice dropping to a whisper. "Were you told that Sandra wasn't just an ex-girlfriend that Mrs. Brooklyn hated?"
I shook my head, confusion etched on my face. "What are you talking about?"
My father's eyes seemed to bore into my soul. "I'm saying that they're all family, Chickadee. Sandra, Aiden, Mrs. Brooklyn... and even Aiden's dad."
I felt like I'd been punched in the gut. "How's that even possible?" I stammered.
My father's expression was grim. "Sandra is Mr. Brooklyn's bastard child."
I stared at him, my eyes wide with shock, as I struggled to process the bombshell he'd just dropped.
I shook my head, trying to process the revelation. "That's not possible," I whispered, my mind reeling with the implications.
My father's expression was grim, his eyes burning with intensity. "It's the truth, my child. And if we don't take action, it'll mean more family reunions. Sandra is Aiden's sister, and don't you think he'll want to be even closer to her now?" He raised an eyebrow, his voice dripping with malice.
I felt a chill run down my spine as he continued, his words painting a dark picture. "If we go back there, they'll team up against us. Trust me, Hailey, they won't hesitate to pull the trigger. They've been waiting their whole lives for this."
His eyes seemed to cloud over, his voice dropping to a low tone. "You want to know how I got this scar?" He touched the scar on his cheek, his eyes flashing with anger. "It's all because of Aiden's dad. He set me up, planned the car accident... but I managed to escape before my car exploded, leaving me with this scar."
I gasped, my eyes wide with shock. "But the report said there was a body in the car..." I protested.
My father's expression was cold, calculating. "That was my trusted guard, not me, Hailey. And all this... everything I'm doing... it's all for us. So we can get what's rightfully ours and take our rightful place."
I felt like I was living in a nightmare, the truth about my family and my past shattering everything I thought I knew.
I stared at my father, my mind reeling with the revelations. But what I couldn't grasp was his connection to Aiden's dad. What secrets had he been keeping? I searched his eyes for any hint of deception, but all I saw was a burning anger, rage, regret, and a deep-seated desire for vengeance.
My world had been turned upside down, and I felt lost and confused. But one thing was certain - I couldn't trust anyone in that building. Not Aiden, not his mom, not his dad, and not even Sandra. She was family, and at this point, anything was possible.
Despite the turmoil, I believed my father's words. There was a ring of truth to them, and I couldn't ignore the family bonds that tied us together. I made a decision - I would stick with my own flesh and blood, no matter what. It was the only way to protect my child and escape this mess.
I looked at my father with determination etched on my face. "What should I do?" I asked, my voice firm.
He grinned, a hint of pride in his eyes. "Now that's my girl," he said, handing me a short pistol. "Kill the first person who pulls the trigger."
With a deep breath, I took the pistol, even when I didn't know how to operate a gun, but at this point I was eager and desperate to learn in an instant, my heart racing with anticipation. We made our way out, but not before I carefully placed Damien in his crib, clutching it tightly. "No one will hurt us," I whispered under my breath, a fierce determination burning within me.
As we emerged from the shadows, I was met with a sight that made my heart sink. Aiden, his mom, and Sandra stood before us, their guns trained on us with an unnerving intensity. The ties that had bound them lay discarded on the ground, a testament to Sandra's handiwork.
I felt like I'd been punched in the gut, my eyes fixed on Aiden's determined expression. How could he even think about pulling the trigger on me? We'd shared so much, our love had been so strong... and yet, here we were, staring down the barrel of a gun.
Tears streamed down my face as I thought about the finality of it all. Was this really how we'd say our goodbyes? The thought was too much to bear, and I felt my legs tremble beneath me.
My father's hand on my shoulder steadied me, his eyes locked on the group before us. "Remember what I told you, Hailey," he whispered, his voice low and urgent. "Protect yourself, no matter what."
I turned to my father, nodding resolutely, and together we approached the group. Aiden was the first to speak, his voice laced with concern. "Hailey, what has he done to you?"
I fixed him with a fierce stare, my voice dripping with venom. "I should be the one asking you that, Aiden. Especially after discovering your little family secret."
Aiden's eyes narrowed, confusion etched on his face. "What do you mean?"
I scoffed, my words spilling out in a torrent. "You know exactly what I mean, Aiden. Fucking your stepsister?"
Aiden's face paled, and he took a step back, his hands raised in a placating gesture. "Hailey, I didn't know. I swear, I had no idea."
Sandra tried to intervene, but Aiden stopped her with a stern voice. "I said I've got this, Sandra."
My father's frustration boiled over, his voice rising in anger. "Oh, for crying out loud, can we just cut through all this family drama tonight, Hailey?"
Suddenly, a gunshot echoed through the building, making me jump. I closed my eyes, clutching Damien tightly as he wailed in my arms.
My heart racing, I wondered, "Who did my dad just shoot?"
