How To Control Magic
ARIA
I woke up with a pounding headache. Memories of what seemed as unbelievable as a dream flooded my mind. I looked up and met Ivy's confused eyes. We sat across each other right outside her hut.
"What..." I began when the sound of footsteps cut me off. A boy about our age walked out from the cluster of trees. He had dark hair and dimpled cheeks as he grinned. His grin fell when he caught sight of me. He looked between Ivy and me sitting on the ground.
"What are you doing there?" He asked. He walked over briskly and pulled Ivy to her feet. I stood up as well.
He leaned over her and whispered in her ear. I'm sure he's asking about my identity. Ivy still seemed groggy because she didn't reply. The boy grabbed her shoulder and shook her.
"What's wrong with you?" He turned to me. "What did you do to her?"
Ivy held his arm. "I'm fine, just slightly dizzy."
He turned to her; this time, he didn't bother whispering. "Ivy, who is she?"
"She's... just a friend."
"Okay firstly, you have no friends... Besides, even if she is a friend, why is she here? You know the coven does not take kindly to strangers!"
"Don't yell! My head is killing me!" She walked into her hut, and he stormed in after her. I heard him shout, and I assumed he has seen Sue and Jerry.
"Three people, Ivy! What the hell were you thinking?"
"I wasn't thinking much, okay? It was late, and they needed help."
"Still, you could have showed them the way out and let them be on their merry way... you know what will happen if my father finds them here!"
At the corner, they both furiously whispered. I don't know why they even bothered; their conversation wasn't exactly quiet.
"He won't find us if you say nothing," I shrugged. Both of them turned to look at me. Beside him, Ivy nodded. She held his hand and looked at him.
"Please don't tell your dad about this."
His cheeks turned a shade of pink.
I felt like a bright third wheel watching them. I rolled my eyes, after making sure that Sue was still comfortably sleeping, I left the cramped room.
Outside, the cool morning air calmed me. For some reason, my mind wandered to Sinbad. I hadn't really thought about him since our escape from prison. It didn't help that I was busy trying to find my parents. Perhaps the PDA inside made me feel a bit lonely. It doesn't matter, though. He is probably romping around with the plastic Sue. I groaned at the thought.
The door opened, and Ivy walked out.
"I hope your boyfriend can keep a secret," I said.
She looked startled, her eyes widened, and she shook her head hard.
"No, no, no, he's not my boyfriend!"
I raised a brow with a smirk. "No need to be shy, I won't judge; he's a cute catch, congrats."
"He's really not my boyfriend!" She explained anxiously.
She didn't seem to be joking, but I didn't care for the details of their relationship, so I simply nodded. "Sure, sure."
I re-entered the hut, blocking out the sound of her protest when I saw something that made my blood boil. On the ground, Jerry was asleep and sprawled like a pig. But on the bed, the boy was slowly taking off Sue's jacket!
I rushed at him and shoved him off her body.
"What the hell do you think you're doing!?" I yelled.
He raised up both hands. "Nothing, just taking a look at her."
The fuck did he just say?
I got off the bed and threw a punch at his face. Before it could hit him, a gust of wind threw me back. I crashed into the wall, and I could taste something metallic; I spat out a clot of blood.
"What is wrong with you?? Shit! Are you okay?"
He walked towards me. I was mad. So fucking angry. How dare he hurt Sue!
The sudden anger curled inside me like a venomous snake. I couldn't control the scream that tore from my lips.

IVY'S Pov
I patted my cheeks after Aria entered my house. I didn't know why I hurriedly denied Thaen; it made me seem so suspicious. I recalled holding his hand and begging him not to tell. It was ridiculous; I knew he would never tell, but for some reason, I wanted to hold his hand... act spoiled a little.
I shook my head. Of course, I liked him. He was my sunshine. When I was young, even before the war, I wasn't exactly popular in my coven, and once when I was starved and beaten, I hid out of sight trying and failing to clean my wounds. Then a little boy snuck towards me. He had a black bag over his shoulder. I recognized him as a popular kid everyone fawned over; I only later knew he was the coven leader's son. He hid whenever someone passed by, and eventually, he got close to my spot.
For a few minutes, we stared at each other; then, he took out something wrapped in paper from the bag. My nose perked at the sweet fragrance. It was bread, and fresh too. I didn't rush to grab it because many times some of the coven kids had brought me good food, but right when I'm about to grab it, they chomp it down right in front of me. I assumed he was here to do the same.
He didn't eat it; instead, he dropped it on my lap and shuffled back, like he was dealing with a doubtful cat. I grabbed the bread and ate it as fast as my small mouth could allow. Suddenly, I felt a sharp pain on my knees. The bread flew from my hands and landed in the dirt; I looked down to see Thaen pouring a bottle of spirit on my leg. His big eyes looked up at me. I wanted to simultaneously punch and hug him. I bandaged my knee with a piece of cloth and reached for the bread. He kicked it away, I was furious, but then he handed me another bread wrapped in paper. We've been friends since.
A loud bang drew me from memory lane. I rushed into my hut when a scream slammed at my eardrums. Blood rushed to my nose, and I felt lightheaded, before I could drop, I looked around groggily and saw that Aria was the one screaming. Thaen was on the floor bleeding from his nose and ears. I made towards Aria and clamped my hand around her mouth. She was still screaming, and the force of it almost tore a hole in my palm.
"Sinthos," I muttered, and she slumped in my arms.
Despite the commotion, neither of her siblings woke up. I knew Sue was sick, but Jerry really is a block of wood!
Thaen blinked up at me; the blood made him look rather tragic. I pulled out a first aid kit from under my bed and handed him something to clean his nose.
"Ivy," he croaked, his voice suddenly sounded grainy and hoarse. "What the hell is she?"
