The start
Alpha Kain looked around at his pack members in the hall. Dead and wounded, no one was spared. He had prepared to attack Virgo, but before he could, he found himself in the midst of a ferocious group of ferals, and he lost sight of her. Now that the dust had cleared, he couldn't see her anywhere. He could see his son's mate, her brother, and the one that seemed to be her lover arguing at the door. It seemed he had been right after all. They were witches. He had caught sight of Aria fighting. But she had fought for them, so although he didn't trust her, he didn't attack her either.
"Alpha," a warrior bowed. "We lost twenty lives, and the rest are injured; about four men are unaccounted for."
Alpha Kain clenched his fist. So many. In a medium pack like theirs, a single loss of life would be felt, let alone twenty. He arranged for those that were injured to be taken to the Pack hospital. As for the dead, he recorded them and prepared to inform their families. He worried about how the news would be received. Who would want to believe that their loved ones had gone to a feast with the Alpha but ended up dead? He also had to report the event that transpired to the Alpha King.
He sighed in frustration. How did this happen? How could she be revived? Her heart was buried in such a place that even his beta was not aware. A seal was even placed on the entrance and poison too, just to ensure that not even a rat could get in. So how was she still revived?
He couldn't dwell on it for long. He took note of the deceased and left the hall. He walked towards the general pack house. He hesitated at the door and changed his mind. He really did not want such a confrontation tonight.
He calmed his mind and decided to speak through the pack link.
His eyes lost focus. He mentioned the names of the dead, "These brave warriors died while fighting against ferals; they died with honor to protect the pack."
It didn't take a second when his head nearly exploded with screams and shouts. The pack link was in chaos. Since he opened it up, he could hear everyone. He quickly closed the link. Tomorrow he would deal with the aftermath, but for tonight, they should dwell on it and accept it. Perhaps by tomorrow, they won't be as hysterical.
Since he no longer had any business here, he made his way to the Alpha King's accommodations. At the door, two guards stood guard. They stopped him.
"I need to see his Majesty," Alpha Kain entreated.
The stoic guards did not move. "The King is busy and cannot be disturbed."
Alpha Kain frowned. His sharp ears picked up on movement in the room followed by ambiguous sounds. It didn't take a genius to know what was keeping the Alpha King busy.
Alpha Kain nodded. "I'll return; please inform his Majesty that there was an attack at the banquet hall."
The guards nodded.
Alpha Kain sighed as he walked away. It seemed that his discussion with the Alpha King would have to wait. He mind-linked the Omega taking care of Sinbad. After confirming that he was fine, he finally relaxed. He walked towards his office. The guards at the door bowed in greeting. He nodded.
He could see the questions in their eyes. Since he offered no other explanation after announcing the dead, they, like every other person, must have been confused. It seemed that despite how intense the fight in the hall had been, the battle hadn't been noticed by the people outside. It didn't matter; everyone would receive an explanation tomorrow. Not a very detailed one though; he planned to keep the part about Virgo to himself. He would only tell the Alpha King. If Virgo is back, they would need all the help they can get.
He entered his office, and at once noted that something was wrong. The picture frame on his desk was broken on the floor. He picked it up; a hole was burnt into his wife's stomach, and their faces were scorched as well. He opened the door with a bang, startling the guards.
"Did someone come in here?"
One guard saluted. "No Alpha, we have been standing guard since morning, and aside from you, not even a fly had entered." Alpha slammed the door shut. Virgo! Only she could do this and escape discovery.
His heart skipped a beat when he recalled something he had long forgotten. He shook the frame in his hand, and it came up empty. He bent and searched the floor. He scattered his table. He didn't see what he was looking for. No no no! She can't have it! How did she even know it was there?
He overturned his office and finally gave up. He slumped in his chair. She really did take it; things are worse than he thought. He stormed out of his office. He wanted to mind-link his beta, but remembering Beta Charl's slothful demeanor, especially when dealing with pack matters, he changed his mind. It would be better he did it himself.
Forget explaining tonight's tragedy to the pack; he had to get them somewhere safe or risk experiencing an even bigger tragedy.
He called over a few warriors, including the captains of the units. He told them to round up the Pack of a few thousand members and be ready to move. He couldn't explain much. But as their Alpha, they trusted him and obeyed. When they left to start packing, Alpha Kain returned to the hall. It had been cleaned up, and Aria and her friends were no longer in sight. He didn't really care to ensure their safety; it would be good enough if they didn't cause him trouble. Besides, looking at how they fought, they wouldn't be in danger anytime soon.
Just as he was about to leave, someone mind-linked him. It was Sinbad's caretaker.
"Alpha, he's awake," the Omega said.
Alpha Kain turned and set off towards Sinbad's quarters.
