Learning magic
Aria.
When I woke up, it was dark, a delicious smell tickled my nose, and it had me sitting up. I was on a pile of clothes on the ground. Jerry was nowhere to be seen, but Sue still slept fitfully on the bed. Her face was slicked with sweat, even though the weather was rather cold. The door was pushed open, and Ivy walked in; she held a small tray with a bowl of soup.
"It doesn't look like much, but the taste is good."
I recalled fighting her friend and then screaming; I couldn't remember much after that.
"What happened?" I asked.
"Nothing much," her tone turned bland. "You just attacked my friend Thaen while he was trying to help your sister, then you went totally berserk and screamed like a banshee... So yeah, nothing much really!"
Why was she overreacting?
I retorted, "I screamed? So? What's the big deal? Your friend was trying to molest my sister!"
"He was trying to help her!" She slammed the tray down, a bit of soup spilled from the bowl; her face was dark when she continued. "Besides, he is the next coven leader; he has a range of beautiful and powerful witches he can pick from; your sister would not interest him in the least."
For some reason, I felt like she wasn't really talking about Sue.
I insisted, "He didn't have to take off her jacket to help her, plus he attacked me with magic, and I couldn't even do anything!"
"You really don't know shit, do you? Your scream nearly burst every blood vessel in our body... It's a miracle your siblings were fine and undisturbed!"
"What?" I gasped. Was she messing with me?
"For stars sake, you're a witch! You and your siblings are witches, okay. It was fine when you didn't know you're an Acabi but now you should have really figured it out!"
She looked down at me "Do you think Selena will let her Acabi be a mere human?"
When her friend returned, I reluctantly apologized; in my defense, he could have yelled 'I'm trying to help her,' then the fight wouldn't have even happened. But no, he just said something ambiguous. Even so, I still attacked him, so I guess I should be the one to apologize first.
Also, I can't say I totally understood what Ivy said; how could I be a witch and not know it?
What had happened back at my former school came to mind, but then, just like everyone else, we believed it was a fluke, a freak accident. Even though I was still too afraid to speak the words Sue and I said that nearly took that bully's life, I never considered the possibility of being a witch. I mean how? Was it mum or dad? Or both??
After coming to terms with the idea, I decided to ask him about what Ivy said, not like I didn't believe her; I just needed to confirm.
"Hey, could you tell me something? What exactly happened? When you pushed me, I was so mad, furious even... but I don't remember much after that."
He looked at me skeptically. "You seriously don't remember nearly killing us?"
Then he shrugged. "It makes sense, though; whoever locked your magic would not want you to remember if you ever accidentally breached it. Hey, do you want me to help you? I could unlock your power; it will only be slightly painful."
He had a small smirk that told me he meant otherwise. I considered his words seriously; did I really want any powers I may have unlocked? Remembering what Selena said, having my powers unlocked is basically accepting the burden, which is something I didn't want to do.
Aside from the fact that I didn't want any distractions trying to find my parents, I also figured the others could take care of it. Ivy has half the spirit of Ur, so I would basically be redundant, and the other two looked pretty powerful.
Besides, if the burden was taken care of, then we would all die, and I wanted no part in that. It would be best to remain dormant. And that's what I replied. Thaen looked at me like I was a fool.
"You can't be dormant for long; even without my help, if your emotions are successfully triggered, your power will explode, and like before, you won't be able to control it; you will harm both friend and foe!"
That silenced me; I looked at the figure on the bed, with Jerry and Sue around, I couldn't be careless! My heart aches; I hated this. I hated being alone; Sue was the leader, she always took care of everything, according to her, being born five minutes earlier meant she was in charge, and that was fine by me, but now I had to deal with all this shit alone. I frowned in anger; why wasn't the spirit of Ur split between both of us? After all, we're twins; it just makes more sense!
But then again, I'm glad; if Sue also had Ur's spirit, then mother would lose both her daughters, but still, I wished she was up, sarcastic, and active. Now she was just like Schrödinger's cat, neither dead nor alive.
"So what's it going to be? Should I unlock it so you can learn to control it, or would you rather wait till you accidentally hurt your loved ones?"
I bit my lips. "When you said it would hurt... Exactly how much will it?"
He held my hands with a smirk; his dimpled cheeks belied his schadenfreude. "Just a smidge... You'll barely even notice it, especially when the nausea hits."
Wait a minu-
Zing.
I felt a sharp pain in my abdomen. I opened my mouth to scream, then I shut it back and ran out. When I reached the forest's edge, I bent over at the base of a tree and puked my guts out. Someone held up my hair and patted my back. After what seemed like forever, my heaving finally ceased.
"Here," I heard Ivy say. Something cool touched my lips, and I drank. I gargled and spat out till my mouth no longer tasted acidic.
As she helped me inside, I whispered to her hearing, "Fuck your boyfriend."
She nearly dropped me; she glanced hurriedly at Thaen in the corner when she was sure he didn't hear. She pinched me hard enough to leave a bruise. "Don't say rubbish," she hissed.
I smirked as I lay down beside Sue. I didn't know what Thaen had done, but her temperature had gone down quite a lot, she almost seemed back to normal. I hugged her arm and willed myself to sleep.
"I'll be back tomorrow to help you learn to control it," I heard Thaen say before the sound of the door being shut. Sleep came quickly, and suddenly I remembered something.
"Where is Jerry?" I muttered, already dozing off. I can't be sure, but I think Ivy replied, "He's out hunting for game."
