CROSSROADS OF CHOICES
Lena's POV
Behind us the trees loomed, shadows reaching like fingers poised to pull us back into darkness. Adam's men were shouting, getting closer, and the sound of their boots thumping the ground made me shudder. My heart flew, every pulse reminding us of how urgently we needed to get away.
"Lena, what are our options??" Beside me, Nyla's voice shook with a mix of terror and will.
"Keep running!," Adrenaline driving my legs, I yelled back. "We must get to the cabin before they catch up!"
Emma, the girl we had saved, gasped raggedly and battled to keep pace. "I can't..." I cannot run much further. She shouted out, terror tumbling into her voice.
"Just a little bit further!" I pushed, looking back at the woods. They felt as though they were closing in, and I sensed peril hiding just beyond view. "We are nearly here!"
Nyla cast a troubled glance at me. What would happen if they owned a car? They could cut off our access!
"We have to be faster then as well." I begged, pushing myself more fiercely. Though my lungs burned, I refused to let anxiety rule. not yet.
We broke into the area where the cabin stood, a worn-out building that seemed to be a hope lighthouse. "In here!" I yelled, yanking open the door and shove Emma inside then trailed Nyla.
Panting fiercely, we leaned against the door and closed it. Too near for comfort, I could hear voices outside.
"Are they arriving?" Emma asked, eyes wide-open.
Glancing out the window, I said, "I don't know." The shadows changed, and I could see the men looking about. My heart collapsed. "We have to keep quiet."
Nyla was already seeking a hiding place. "What if they come upon us here?"
I argued, "they won't," but the air was thick with doubt.
I felt our circumstances weighing down on me as we bent in the low light. "We have to come up with a strategy," I murmured, trying to get my thoughts working. We cannot only sit here and wait.
"What would you like??" The voice of Nyla was strained. "We are outnumbered."
"Maybe we can make a diversion," I murmured, a flash of inspiration starting in my chest. "We might be able to disappear if we can divert them."
Emma pounced forward, her anxiety transforming into will. "I'm able to assist! I know the woodland rather well. I can guide them away.
Are you positive? Needing to test her bravery, I asked. "It is dangerous out there."
Emma insisted, her voice strong: "I have to try. "I am not able to go back."
Nyla cast a concerned look at me. Still, what if they find you?
Emma said, her will hardening: "They won't." "I am qualified to do this."
Given our choices are few, I nodded. "Alright, here's the plan." I hurriedly summarized our required actions. Emma would make commotion to liven the men away, while Nyla and I were ready to flee.
Emma's eyes flicked with terror when we talked about the specifics. "What if I cannot get back to you?"
"You will," I told her, sensing an odd confidence in this young woman I hardly knew. Emma, you are powerful. So far you have made it. Simply said, we will be waiting for you.
Her bravery was evident as she nodded. It was a sobering reminder of my own challenges—how I had battled to survive, how I had to summon fortitude when all appeared lost.
Emma's shoulder was grasped by Nyla. "Be careful," advises.
Emma promised, then she slid out the rear door, vanishing into the darkness.
The cabin seemed smothering the instant she left. Nyla walked back and forth, anxiousness written on her face. "What if they run across her?"
"They won't," I said, even though doubt tormented me. She is familiar with the woodland. She will be in good shape.
But my optimism changed as the seconds passed. Every choice felt like weight falling on me. Was it fair to expose her to such risk?
"Lena, what if this was a mistake?" Nyla said, her voice subdued. "What if we left just with her?"
"No," I said with great conviction. Running right now runs the danger of our being captured. We owe it to her to believe.
The sound of yelling emanated from outdoors just then. Moving to the window and peeking out to see the soldiers searching, my heart surged. Their cries got louder as they grew increasingly annoyed.
"Where did they vanish to??" One of them yelled and angrily kicked the ground.
"It's too quiet," said another. "They could not have just disappeared!"
The third advised, "Maybe they went back to the camp."
My gut turning over, I turned back to Nyla. "This is our opportunity. We have to move immediately if we are going to do it.
Are you indeed sure? Nyla's eyes were wide with anxiety.
My heart thumping in my chest, "We have to take the risk," I said. "We will get caught if we wait any more."
Adrenaline pumping through my body, we slid toward the door. The desperation seemed to be driving me ahead. I couldn't permit Emma's bravery to be in waste.
The fresh air hit me like a wave of relief as we opened the door and slid out, but I knew we had to keep quiet. We proceeded fast, lowering as we negotiated the cabin.
Still, I could hear the men yelling, frustration tinging their voices. "Let us check the other side!"
"Now's our chance," I said to Nyla quietly. "ollower me."
We tried to hide by moving farther into the forest, the underbrush crunching underfoot. My heart hammered, a concoction of exhilaration and anxiety. We were just about free.
A great crash came from the cabin just then. I halted and turned around.
"What was that?"? Nyla murmured, eyes wide.
My heart sinking, I said, "I don't know." "We must keep on."
But the sound of feet followed us from behind as we turned to go.
hey! There they are! a voice yelled.
I felt panic strike me. Run! I cried and rushed farther into the forest.
Pushing into the thick underbrush, branches whipped against my arms. Nyla's hard gasps behind me could be heard, her will exactly matched mine. We had to run away.
"Lena, where do we travel to?" Pining, Nyla struggled to keep up.
"Exactly follow me!" Trying to stay grounded, I yelled. The woodland seemed to be a maze, every curve blending together as I battled to stay concentrated.
We avoided past trees, but just as we were getting distance, a man came out of the darkness to obstruct our way. "Going Somewhere?"
Adrenaline pumping through me, I skidded to stop. We're not terrified of you!
Hey? He grinned and moved forward. "Then let's see how brave you really are."
I shoved Nyla behind me without thinking. I had little time. "Go!." Ready to meet the danger, I yelled. I could not allow anxiety to control my behavior any more.
The man came at me, but I sidestepped, instincts driving in. I had to direct that force now; I had fought before. Surprised, he staggered back when I pushed him.
"Run!", Heart pounding, I yelled once more. I turned around to find Nyla hesitating. Please go, Nyla! Today!
She reached for a little knife from her pocket instead of sprinting, though. "I'm not quitting you!"
Another man showed up before I could reply, and the matter rapidly got out of hand.
"Stay back!," Nyla yelled, lifting the knife angrily.
Taunting her weapon, he asked, "Are you really ready to fight?" "This isn't a game, girl," says
Seeing the terror in Nyla's eyes set my heart racing. "We cannot fight them all!," says Screamed. We have to consider!
But the first man recovered and charged at us once while I was speaking. Something changed inside me at that instant. I could not merely watch and let dread rule.
"Get ready to run!." I roared, words driven by adrenaline. "On three!!"
We nodded, adjusting ourselves for what lay ahead.
"One... two... three!!"
We rushed to the side as the first man lunged, just avoiding him. But as we moved, I could feel uncertainty weighing my heart.
We headed farther into the forest, the sounds of pursuit lost behind us. Though the rush of escape shot through me, I could hear my own breath fraying and wild.
"Where do we go right now?" Glancing around, Nyla asked with a shaky voice.
"Follow me," I said, my head whirling. We wanted a secure area to gather.
But as we started to sort ourselves, I heard a stir. "Wait!", said, "Are you listening?
Emma broke through the trees, breathless but driven, before I could respond. "I pulled them away! We can leave!
Emma! I yelled out, relief sweeping across me. You made it back.
