INTO THE DEN OF THE LION II
Samantha's POV
As we got to Royce's home, the air seemed thicker than normal and an uncomfortable quiet encircled us like a dense cloud. Every stride we made seemed weighted, as though the ground under us was just ready to break open and engulf us whole. Alex walked next to me, his face covered in a mask of quiet will, but I knew him too well. His jaw was clearly tense, and his hand hung just a bit too near to his firearm.
This was not any one goal. Everything we had been battling came together here, and I could feel it weighing down both of us. Royce's words still resonate in my head: Samantha, see me. You are not ready for what is ahead.
Though we were too deep in now to turn back, he knew we were coming.
Lila was several paces ahead, her eyes darting from side to side as though she expected Royce's men to leap out at any minute. She had been silent since we left the safe home, but her every movement betrayed the terror. Fear of what Royce had already done dominated rather than just what she may do. Lila had been in his life, had in some respects shaped it, and now she was on the opposite side, working with us to destroy it.
"Stay sharp," Alex said as we approached the estate. High barriers covered with security cameras that watched the entire area like alert sentinels "We have no idea what waits for us inside."
My pulse increasing as we neared the gate, I nodded. This was it—that which has no return point. We could turn back once we entered.
Lila halted at the gate, her palm lingering over the keypad. She murmured softly, "This is the back entrance," her voice hardly above a whisper. "Royce rarely makes use of it. Though least guarded, this does not make it safe.
I looked at Alex; she nodded slightly in favor. With few choices, this was as nice as it might have been.
Lila entered the code and for a brief, heart-stopping moment nothing occurred. Every second stretched out agonizingly as I held my breath, the silence choking. The gate swung open then with a gentle click.
Alex responded, his voice level but tinged with urgency: "Let's move." We entered and the silent finality of the cold metal gate closing behind us shivered my spine.
Royce's estate's inside was just as I had pictured—cold, sterile, and expansive. Glass and steel high walls, perfect landscaping more akin to an artistic creation than a real garden. Everything in this place screamed authority, control, and power. It was a fortification, a mirror of the owner.
We stayed in the shadows, moving swiftly and silently toward the main structure. As we neared the center of the estate, my heart hammered in my chest, each pulse resonating more in my ears. Our main goal here was the program meant to bring down Royce's whole operations. Still, getting at it would not be simple. Royce knew we were on our way, thus this place most likely teeming with his troops.
" Where is the server room?" As we bent under a short hedge, Alex murmured to Lila.
Two storeys down, inside the main house, Lila answered. "It's under great security, but there's a service elevator straight to it. Once we get there, we might have a chance.
The word hung, weighty with doubt, between us. All we had as we were approaching the lion's cave was a meager hope that we might survive.
Moving fast, we avoided the surveillance cameras as best we could by slipping between the shadows like ghosts. Every stride had my heart racing and my senses on great alert. Alex stayed near, his presence consistent and comforting, yet I could sense the stress emanating from him. This was a high-stakes game with a razor-thin margin for mistake.
Lila halted short as we got ready to enter the main house, pointing a hand to tell us to stop. My breath seized in my throat as I realized why: two armed guards stood by the door, their faces blank as they looked about. We could hardly be going by them without attracting notice.
Alex reached for his revolver, but I grabbed his arm and shook my head. We cannot bring them down here. It will cause alarms.
He lowered his hand and wrinkled but nodded. Lila turned to look about, her brow wrinkling as she did so. "There's another way in," she said softly. Though it runs more risk, it avoids the guards.
I looked at Alex, who sent a doubtful gaze.
Lila stopped and bit her lip. The cleaning crew has a separate entrance. Though less guarded, it is distant from the server room. Once we enter, we will have to act fast.
Alex looked for a time, his gaze narrowing. "We have no time for discussion. lead by example.
Lila nodded, and we rounded the side of the house following her closely along the walls. Though the door was unlocked, the entrance she mentioned was tiny, nearly invisible. We crept inside and followed a long, narrow hallway surrounded by the cool house.
Knowing Royce was most likely somewhere inside, waiting, it seemed strange to be within his stronghold. Every sound enhanced as we walked across the vacant hallways, my nerves were on edge. The silence was stifling; only the gentle sound of our feet broke through.
Alex said, "Stay close," his gaze darting ahead along the corridor.
We turned a corner and stopped.
At the end of the hall stood a towering, broad-shouldered man clearly belonging to Royce. His back was toward us, but I knew we would be discovered if he reversed direction.
Panic blazing in her eyes, Lila turned back at us. Alex gestured for us to still, his hand reaching to his weapon. Watching him go, each step slow and meticulous, my heart hammered in my chest. Too preoccupied with the corridor ahead, the guard was totally oblivious.
Alex then quickly, in a smooth action, seized the guard from behind, covering his mouth and dragging him back into the darkness. The guard battled momentarily but it was short lived. Closing the door behind him, Alex hauled the unconscious body into a nearby room.
"Let's go," he replied softly, his voice cool even in the conflict.
At last we arrived at the service elevator Lila had suggested. Tucked at the end of another small corridor, it was unsecured but locked with a keycard.
"I don't have access to this," Lila said, frustratedly whispering. We would have to hack it.
Alex linked a little gadget he retrieved from his suitcase to the lock while crouching beside the keypad. As we waited, my heart flew while the seconds achingly slowly passed. Every moment seemed like an eternity, and I couldn't get rid of the impression Royce's men were hovering over us.
The elevator doors slid open and the latch blipped. We crept inside, quiet hiss sealing the doors behind us.
"Two levels down," Lila murmured, her voice hardly audible. "We will have some time before they see us once we are in the server room."
I nodded, my tummy turning over with nervousness. This was it—the instant we had been aiming for for weeks. Everything turned on our next action.
The tension between us was thick and obvious as the elevator dropped terribly quiet. My pulse accelerated, and my head spun with a thousand separate ideas. If we arrived too late? Suppose Royce had known this already?
The elevator rang, and the doors slid open to expose a long, darkly lit hall. At the end, under heavy steel door protection, was the server room. Though I knew it would not last long, there were no guards visible.
Alex added, his voice low and urgent: "We have to move quickly."
Hurrying down the corridor, we stopped before the door. Lila moved forward, keying on the panel in a code. My breath seized in my throat as the door opened to show the chamber beyond—a large area dotted with rows of servers—the faint hum of machinery filling the air.
Lila murmured, "This is it."
We entered and Alex went right to connect the gadget we had brought to one of the servers. Watching the progress bar gradually fill on the screen made my heart race. Every second seemed to be stretching out, each moment full of promise for us to be grabbed.
The chamber erupted in a loud alert, the lights glowing red.
Lila remarked, her voice faltering with anxiety: "They know we're here."
Alex cursed silently while his fingers flew over the keyboard. "We are about to reach here. Only a couple more seconds.
Footfall resounded along the hall, getting louder with every second. My hands quivering slightly, my heart hammered in my chest as I reached for my gun.
The bar for advancement reaches one hundred percent.
Alex remarked, detaching the gadget, "got it." "Let us go."
We shot for the door, but as we got to it someone stepped into the gateway and blocked our route.
