A TRUTH UNVEILED
Adrian's POV
I was standing in the ballroom's corner with my back to the large windows, looking around the space as if it were normal. Unmistakably, there was tension in the air, the kind that precedes a storm. However, that storm was entirely my tonight, and Victor's conceit was the catalyst. I was momentarily comforted by Samantha's warning touch, but I could already feel my patience ebbing.
My palm curled into a fist when Victor's eyes lingered on Samantha for an excessive amount of time. I could see it in the glimmer of discomfort in her eyes; she felt it too. I was even more impressed with her after she steeled herself and raised her chin with a rebellious determination.
With a determined gait and an unyielding gaze, I approached Victor's court. I would confront him directly if he wanted to play with us. Tonight, he wouldn't win this game.
"Having fun?" With a steady tone and a caution that I knew he would notice, I asked. He smirked at me as if he had been anticipating this.
'That's right," he said, looking quickly at Samantha. It's unfortunate that you didn't include her in the family sooner, Adrian. What an intriguing addition.
Samantha interrupted, her voice piercing, adding a bold edge to Victor's derision, "You mean a threat." She was clearly as sick of his shenanigans as I was.
Victor's eyes briefly glowed with annoyance before returning to their typical grin. Whatever you want to call it, Samantha," he said with ease, "but you have a way of making things complicated. ones that have a propensity to fall apart rapidly.
Victor was the only one who could hear me lean in. "Perhaps we should discuss those issues in a more private setting."
For the first time, his confidence faltered and his expression faltered. He wasn't as unbeatable as he wanted us to think; he was tense. "Maybe," he said calmly. "You wouldn't want everyone in this room to know who you're dealing with, would you?"
"Not you," I retorted.
In the side office fifteen minutes later.
There was a lot of tension in the room as Samantha, Victor, and I stood silently, each waiting for the other to initiate contact. Samantha stood next to me, staring at Victor with an unwavering gaze. The arrogance was still there, but it was obviously gone as he leaned on the desk.
Samantha broke the silence by saying, "Enough games." "Victor, what do you want?"
His laughter was dark and low. "Samsa, I'm looking for something that you can't give me. Adrian took from me everything I desire.
I kept my eyes on him, not letting his remarks bother me. "You've come to discuss business. Don't change it.
'All right," Victor said, squinting his eyes. The board might have been duped by your contract marriage, but it won't last. Adrian, people are starting to talk. They are keeping an eye on everything you do and are waiting for you to make a mistake.
I stepped up and responded, "They can watch all they want." "Because I'm making sure they have no choice but to remain in line while they're busy watching."
Victor's face became icy, his confident façade eroding even more. Adrian, you believe you've won, but you haven't. You are unaware of certain things that, if they were to come to light, may destroy you.
Samantha was tensing up next to me, so I put a reassuring hand on her arm. Refusing to back down, I answered, "You're bluffing."
Victor's eyes grew gloomy. "Am I?"
Suddenly he reached into his pocket, took out a little leather-bound notepad, and threw it on the desk between us. He said, "Read it." "Go ahead if you believe you know everything."
I opened the notepad and looked at Samantha, who appeared just as confused as I was. Lists, dates, bank accounts, and a name that made me shudder were all inside: Leo Dawson.
I felt sick to my stomach. The name of my son, in the sloppy handwriting of Victor. It was more than simply Leo, though; Victor had planned every nefarious tactic imaginable to gain control of my business, including threats and blackmail.
Samantha continued, "You have been spying on us," in a whisper that was lethal.
Victor gave a shrug. Whatever you want to call it. You see, Adrian, there are those who are skilled at filthy tricks. I can get in touch with your family whenever I choose, even if you might believe they are safe.
I felt a white-hot, blinding wave of rage. I stated in a quiet, controlled voice, "If you ever go near my family again, you'll regret it," but it was clear that violence was on the horizon.
Victor merely grinned. He answered, "I'll take this as a friendly warning, then," but his tone was not amicable. He put his sneer back on his face and backed toward the door. "Enjoy your evening to the fullest."
I went to Samantha as soon as he was gone, and she was looking at the notebook with a pale face. "Adrian is aware of Leo."
My chest constricted. "Samsa, I'll take care of this. I will not allow him to harm our family.
Even if her eyes softened, I was still struck with a vulnerability that I hadn't anticipated: fear. "Adrian, we can't continue to battle him in secret. He will eventually figure out a way to turn this against us. We must assume command.
I nodded as her words began to weigh heavily on me. I answered, "Then we go on the attack." "We take the battle to him."
In the hotel suite later that evening.
Samantha paced the suite with a focused, determined expression. She was still absorbing everything that had happened, and I could see that the adrenaline from the argument with Victor had not worn off. As I watched her, I wanted to embrace her and tell her that I wouldn't allow Victor to triumph. However, I was certain that words would not suffice.
I walked across the room and said, "Samantha." "I need your trust, even though I realize this is overwhelming. We will overcome this.
She raised her head and searched my eyes. "Yes, Adrian, you have my trust. However, I must understand that we are fighting for the same cause. that this goes beyond your business or pride.
I grasped her hand and drew her near. "This concerns us. about safeguarding the life we are creating. I paused, my words weighing heavily on me. Samantha, I don't want to lose you. Not to anyone, not to him.
Her face flashed with relief as she let out a slow exhale. Then, with a resolution that echoed mine, she muttered, "Let's face this together."
I put my arms around her and felt the tension begin to release. For a long time, we remained in that position, a silent power flowing between us. However, I had a sneaking suspicion that this was just the beginning. The threats Victor had made were genuine, and he refused to back down.
My phone was vibrating on the nightstand when I woke up, just as the sun was beginning to rise. Squinting at the screen, I reached for it. The message came from an unidentified number:
Adrian, I told you. Be mindful of your back.
As I read the message and the understanding set in, my pulse raced. Victor wasn't playing a bluff. He was moving more quickly than I had thought. I was at my breaking point.
In order to avoid waking Samantha, I softly slipped out of bed and went out onto the balcony. I could see the city in front of me, its lights still glistening in the early morning. I steadied myself by taking a deep breath.
Victor would get a war if he desired one. However, I would ensure that he had no chance of winning this time.
Later that morning, back in the suite.
Samantha was awake already, resolved to shine in her eyes. "Did you get any sleep?" she inquired, observing the strain in my stance.
"Not much," I acknowledged. Victor took the initiative. He isn't being reserved.
Despite swallowing, she spoke steadily. "Then neither do we."
I took her hands, a sense of serenity settling over me. We would tackle any challenge together. And I'd be prepared if Victor wanted to go overboard.
But as we left the suite, a new message flashed on my phone. This time, it was a photo—one that made my blood run cold. It was Leo, at school, playing on the playground. And behind it was a straightforward message:
You ought to have paid attention.
Samantha's face paled as she read the message over my shoulder, and I felt her hold tighten on my arm. Her eyes flashed with fright as she glanced at me, but I made myself think and remain composed.
Despite the horror in my voice, I answered, "We'll protect him." "Whatever it takes."
However, the gravity of our situation weighed heavily on us as we hurried out of the suite. Power and control were no longer the only factors involved. Victor was prepared to use our son in order to achieve his goals.
I realized then that we had gone too far and would never be able to go back.
