REBUILDING TRUST
Samantha's POV
The morning sun illuminated the shards of our broken planet as it streamed through the curtains' gaps. Tangled in the sheets, I lay in bed peering up at the ceiling. The night before still raged in my heart; Victor's actions exposed our life to be flipped upside down. I had battled the odds, but now it seemed as though we were just gathering the fragments to attempt to make sense of things.
I looked across at Adrian, still asleep, lying next to me. His brow wrinkled, even in sleep, as though he were carrying the weight of the earth. Though I wanted to reach out to console him, I was still recovering from our last argument.
"Sam??" His voice gruff and confused pierced the quiet. "Are you okay?"
I sat up, armor-like drawing the covers around me. Indeed, only thinking.
"about?" He sat up rubbing his eyes; the sheets fell down his torso. Though my Adrian was transformed by all that had happened, the image was both familiar and alien.
"About how we go forward," I answered, my voice firm. "After everything with Victor and Elena, I want to make sure we don't slide back into old behaviors. With each other, we have to be sincere.
His eyes darkened. You mean you want to talk about my family?
I answered by nodding. "We are unable to ignore it. Adrian, all of it is linked. Your family's past shapes your present; if we want to create a future, we must face it as well.
He groaned and ran a hand over his hair. Alright, let us discuss.
That was the start of a conversation on what we knew about Victor and Elena's schemes to discredit us. I related the tense times at the gala, how near we had been to losing everything. Adrian listened carefully and nodded at the appropriate points, but I could see the inner conflict raging in him.
Victor is a brilliant manipulator, he murmured at last, his voice quiet. He has always been. He is vulnerable today, though, as his intentions are now freely available.
"Vensitive?" I echoed, shocked. "You believe he will be lying down? He has already shown he will stop at nothing to underline control. We have to be ready for anything.
Adrian turned, and I watched the fire blaze in his eyes. You are indeed correct. Though I have to face him, I cannot do it by myself. Sam, we are more powerful taken together. Right at my side is you.
Though hesitation persisted, the sincerity in his voice gave me a kick-start. "What if he tries to use me against you again?"
He stretched for my hand and squeezed it firmly. "He will not. You can count on me for that. I will guard Leo and you at any expenses. We will formulate a strategy. We will expose him; he cannot touch us.
"Okay," I said, driven by a surge. "Then let's get right on it." First, though, we have to reorganize. I would like to speak with Leo. He deserves to know what is happening, hence I believe it is time we include him in our struggle.
"AGreed." Adrian grinned, a little hope flickering in his eyes. "Let's develop a family strategy."
We got out of bed and started to get dressed; the air between us changed from great tension to a feeling of direction. Being a team, I had to remind myself of that—remind both of us.
Downstream, the air smelled freshly made coffee, and I poured two cups as Adrian walked around generating ideas for our next move. I saw him as he moved, the confidence returning to his posture, the way he turned over papers on his desk with fresh energy. Although it was lovely to see him leading once more, my heart still weighed our past.
We assembled around the kitchen table once Leo came out of his room. He peered between us, wide with inquiry. "What else is happening? You two seem to be serious.
Adrian dropped down to meet Leo's eye. " Friend, we have had some difficulties lately; but, we are overcoming them together. Alright, so you should always be free to chat with us.
Leo responded, "Okay," his brow wrinkling as he considered our words. "Is it on the nasty people from past times? Victor and that lady?
I held my breath, then Adrian nodded. That is indeed true. Though we are not going to let them, they are attempting to return into our life. We will fight back as a family and must be ready for that.
"Like superheroes?" Leo's eyes gleamed with enthusiasm; the weight from his young shoulders lifted.
Exactly, I answered, trying a smile. We will show them that they cannot muck about with us.
Yes! Leo punched the air, and Adrian smiled—the weight of the earth briefly dropped.
The environment changed from gloomy determination to buoyant hope when we sat together to talk about our approach. Every obstacle we encountered strengthened our bond and made me fill with pride in our small family.
But that was a fleeting moment. My phone buzzed on the table as we were plotting. I looked down to find an unidentified number messaging. Opening it sent my heart racing.
You are somewhere known to me. You cannot avoid Victor. He is scheduled to visit you.
I took a hard gulp and felt the color fade from my face. I said, "Adrian," my voice hardly whispered. "We have a difficulty."
"What is it?" he questioned, turning serious as the brightness in his eyes went out.
With somewhat shaky palms, I showed him the message. "It comes from someone supposedly knowing our whereabouts. Victor is arriving for us, they say.
Adrian stood upright and his attitude grew stiff. "We must migrate." Present now.
Leo turned back and forth between us, uncertainty and anxiety slinking into his face. "What's happening?," asked
With a calm yet forceful voice, Adrian urged, "Stay close, buddy." "We will keep you safe." Okay, I need you to believe us.
As we headed to the front door, I took Leo's hand and squeezed it firmly. "We'll work through this," I said to him. "We will safeguard our family."
We couldn't linger even though the early brightness seemed like a false promise outside. Adrian showed us his automobile, urgency driving our actions. I turned back to look at the house; our haven now seemed more like a target.
Adrian's phone rang as we started the car. I observed him respond, his manner changing as he listened carefully. Ask what? Are you clear-minded? His voice sank to a whisper, his face became solemn. Alright, we'll be right there.
"What is it"? My gut wriggling with discomfort, I asked.
"Something comes up." We should get together with my attorney. It concerns Victor. We could have an opportunity to stop this.
I felt the weight of approaching peril drop on us as he rushed down the street. We couldn let Victor reach us. We had to keep moving forward one step.
"Are you sure Adrian about this? Try to keep the tremble out of my voice, I pleaded. "What if it is a trap?"
He shook his head, eyes full of will. "We are not going to stop. Should we yield to anxiety, he prevails. We have to show him that we are not reluctant to defend ourselves.
But what if—?
"No more "what ifs," Sam said. We are going to confront this together. I swear not to let anything happen to Leo or you."
His determination helped me to muster bravery. I started to feel driven as we neared the office. We were not going to let Victor split us now; we had come so far.
Adrian turned to face us just as we were parking. "Stay close and go with my lead. Although I won't endanger either of you, we should be wise about this.'s
Knowing I could meet whatever came our way, I nodded. The stakes now higher than ever, we entered the structure together.
Tension permeated the air within, and I could feel unspoken words weighing between us. Adrian guided us from the lobby to the meeting room, where Claire, his perfectly groomable attorney, awaited us.
"Adrian," she said, curious eyes glancing over my face. "And this has to be your family. That you came makes me happy.
"What is going on?" With intensity in his voice, Adrian questioned.
Her tone grave, "victor's people are moving faster than we expected." "We must move fast to defend your interests and maintain your position. Should we fail, he could use this to turn around you.
And how might we accomplish that? I asked, the struggle in me starting. "We cannot let him define our life any more."
Claire agreed. "We have to compile proof and figure out how to reveal him and his links to the effort at blackmail. Should we be able to demonstrate his threat, we could be able to proceed legally to deter him.
Adrian fixed me, resolved, shining in his eyes. "We are capable of this, Sam. combined.
The idea started to take shape, and we talked about several approaches that would outline a way to neutralize Victor's impact and recover our life.
But my phone buzzed just as we started to feel in charge.
