THE STORM GATHERING
Lena's POV
Footfall thundered outside the hut, then the piercing sound of wood splintering under pressure. As I froze, adrenaline surged through my heart. Jacob was positioned by the window, rifle pointed, poised to defend us.
"Stay low," he said, turning back to face the assembly.
Pulling Alex down next to me, I bent behind a battered recliner. "What are we meant to do?" My voice was hardly audible, I asked.
"We are going to fight," he declared with a strong, determined look. "We cannot let them take us without a struggle."
In my head spun. This was it—that confrontation I had both expected and dreaded. We had gone so far, confronted so many threats, and now we were about to battle for our lives.
With a smash, the door opened to expose a troop of men pouring into the cabin. The heart dropped. Their faces were hidden under masks; they were sporting military gear. Though I could not see their faces, I could sense the threat they represented.
"Get down!" Jacob yelled, and my heart thumping in my chest, I ducked automatically.
"Search the place!" One of the troops barked, his voice austere and commanding. " They can't have gone far!"
Alex grabbed my arm and murmured, "Lena," urgently. "We need to relocate. Not now!
I nodded while my mind flew. Staying here made us sitting ducks. "The back door," I answered, my voice firm in the tumult.
I glimpsed Jacob's strained face as we crawled and approached the back of the cabin. Though I could see the strain in his eyes, he seemed resolved to shield us. He was carrying on his shoulders our safety.
"Leave!" As he covered our retreat, Jacob urged.
We exited into the open from the rear door, the coolness of the forest air kissing my face. We had little time, and I heard the troops yelling inside the cabin.
"Over here!" Finn answered from behind a group of trees. Breath coming in short bursts, I ran toward him.
"What's the proposal?" Looking at every one of my friends, I inquired.
"We have to separate," Jacob remarked, his voice firm in the middle of the turmoil all around us. "They will be searching groups for us. Should we separate, we could have more chances to avoid them.
"Are you absolutely sure that is safe?" Looking between Jacob and me, Alex questioned. "What if they spot one of us?"
With unflinching eyes, Jacob said, "It's the greatest shot we have. "We will get back to the old quarry in one hour. We can reorganize and decide what to do going forward.
The weight of his comments draped over us like a thick blanket. Uncertainty felt like a weight on my shoulders. But time was not on delay.
"Okay," I answered with a strong voice. "Let's start."
Adrenaline pumping through me, we hurriedly moved across the forest. Though the threat loomed over us like a heavy cloud, every stride seemed to be nearer freedom.
I went to Alex. "Stay close," I said.
He nodded with resiliency in his eyes. "We will make it out of this."
I kept having the impression that we were under observation as we negotiated the woodland. The air had obvious tension, and I could hear the faint sounds of soldiers looking for us close by.
My heart was hammering in my chest, I said, "We have to keep moving."
A few minutes later we came onto a tiny brook. Our motions were covered by the sound of flowing water, and I felt relief flood over me.
Alex said, "Let's pause," looking around. We cannot afford to be careless.
Agreed, I said, my breath coming in steady pulses.
We leaned behind a big boulder, staring around. As the troops searched close, I could hear the slight rustle of foliage; they hadn't yet seen us.
With a head shake, I said, "I can't believe this is happening." "We were just trying to live our lives; now..."
Alex said, his voice steady: "I know." "But our main concern should be getting through this. We cannot let them now dictate our life.
His comments really spoke to me. For too long, I had felt powerless entangled in a web of doubt and anxiety. But suddenly, surrounded by friends, I sensed a flutter of hope starting inside me.
"Right," I straightened up and said. "We are more powerful taken collectively. We will discover a way to turn the tide if we can only hang a little bit longer.
A quick rustle of branches drew my eye as we gathered behind the rock. Turning to see a shadow approaching us, my heart surged.
"Did you hear that?" With a thumping heart, I whispered.
"Yeah," Alex said, his voice tight. "Stay silent."
As the shadow approached, I experienced a tsunami of anxiety. Suppose it was one of the troops? The stranger entered the light just as I got ready to escape.
"Lena?" a familiar voice cried out.
"Finn!." I cried, relief flowing over me.
"What happened? We seemed to have lost you people! His face white but resolute, he said.
"We split up to avoid the troops," I hurriedly said. "We have to keep moving; they are looking about here."
Looking around nervously, he asked, "Where's Jacob?
"I'm not sure," I said, concerned in my voice. "He is covering our getaway."
Finn nodded with a sobering look. "We should hunt for him. He will have a better schedule.
"Okay, let's go; lead the way," I said.
I felt uncertainty weigh down on me as we negotiated the forest. Every sound set my heart racing, and I couldn't get rid of the sensation we were under pursuit.
A loud yell rang through the trees just as we were ready to cross another little clearing.
A soldier cried out, "Over there!"
My heart collapsed. "Run!" With a surge of adrenaline, I yelled.
Branches whirling on our skin, we pushed forth sprinting across the forest. The soldiers' footsteps throbbing in time with my heart, I could hear them gaining on us.
"We have to work out how to lose them!" Finn gasped, turning to look back.
"There!," says Spotting a tangle of bushes. "We were able to hide there and avoid them."
We slung low and entered the thicket, the brambles rubbing our skin. As I listened to the footsteps approaching—each one seeming like a countdown—my heart surged.
One of the troops yelled, "They're right there," clearly tense.
"Search the area!" another directive called for.
Breathing, my heart thumping in my chest. Fear was building within me, hot. Should they come upon us, what then?
"Lena," Alex said, his voice low. "We cannot spend eternity here."
My mind whirling, I said, "I know." But we will be caught if we move now. We must wait for the opportune time.
Abruptly, the woods echoed with a great crash. Frustration in his voice, a soldier exclaimed, "There's nothing here!"
I looked at Alex and Finn; their worried expressions "We have to use their diversion," I whispered frantically.
"On my count," Alex responded, staring straight forward. "one... two... three!,"
As the troops yelled behind us, we shot from the undergrowth, running farther into the forest. Driven by fear of capture, my heart surged.
Keep on! Adrenaline driving us along, I yelled.
As we felt we were in the clear, a strong yell cut over the air. "They're over here!"
Realizing we were under corn, my stomach sank. "Run!"; Desperate, I yelled, my throat trenched.
Although we ran over the woods, the troops were persistent. Every stride seemed more weighty, as despair settled in.
Lena! Finn phoned and turned back to me. "What do we have to do?"
An explosion of rage shot through me. We keep on battling! We cannot abandon it now!
With that, I pushed forth, will run through me. My buddies were behind me, their will firm.
I suddenly came upon a little cave buried under a group of boulders. I exclaimed, pointing "In there!"
We ducked inside and recovered our breath amid the cool air. My heart pounding, I pushed my back against the wall and listened to the noises of the troops marching forward.
"Do you suppose they looked at us?" Finn murmured, eyes wide with terror.
Feeling the weight of doubt creeping in, I said, "I'm not sure."
I sensed kinship developing between us as we bent in the shadows. We will fight together going forward; we have battled together.
My voice firm, I continued, "I won't let them take us." "We are more robust than they could possibly imagine."
Alex nodded with a fierce concentration in his eyes. "We will make it out of this Lena. all together.
I had a flash of hope starting inside me. We had overcome so much already; I knew we could do this too.
