SHADOWS OF DOUBT
Lena's POV
The room seemed weighty with silence as I stood there, still rushing from the conflict. Beckett lay still on the ground, and like a tidal wave the realization of what had just transpired broke over me. Though at what cost? We had won this war.
"Lena"! Are you ok? Concern written on his face, Finn hurried to my side. His eyes looked for any kind of damage.
Though my voice was faltering, I said, "I'm fine." The adrenaline and the aftermath of the fight more rocked me than any physical injury. "What about you?," asked
He nodded, but his face clearly showed distress. "only a bruise." Nothing I am unable to manage. He stopped, starting over at Mara and Jacob, both of whom were regaining their breath. Still, we have to confirm Beckett is truly out. Not yet let our guard down.
I looked where he pointed, the weight of the moment down on me. "Do you believe it to be over? What if he returns? Really, what if?
Finn groaned and ran a hand over his hair. "I'm not sure. We must, however, be ready for everything.
Mara forced herself to stand up and dust her clothes. We have to act swiftly. Should he awaken—'
"He won't wake up," I said, my voice harder than I had meant. I looked over my shoulder and was bored with being afraid. "We cannot carry on living like this, waiting for him to strike once more."
Jacob turned to face me, wrinkled brows. "Lena, it is not that straightforward. He has several tools at hand and people who might be of assistance. We have to have a plan.
"Then let's make one!" I said, a fire starting inside me. I'm done running on the defense. It is time we fought for him.
Finn gave Mara and Jacob looks. Their hesitancy and the worry hiding behind their eyes caught me. "What do you suggest?" he inquired at last.
We learn where he is hiding. We assemble our allies—the ones he hasn't yet turned against us—and bring him down permanently, my voice steady with every syllable.
"That's a dangerous move," Mara replied, sounding wary. "What if we fail??"
"We won't," I said, the passion behind my words startling even to me. Each of us has the other. We are more powerful taken collectively. We really only need to believe that.
Finn nodded softly. As you say. Too long we have been living in terror. We ought to flip the script.
Driven once more, we gathered around a makeshift table laden with maps and intelligence gathered during the past few weeks. Piece by piece, each of us offering ideas and tactics, the plan came together. For the first time in a long time, I felt hope growing inside me.
Days went by getting ready for our assault on Beckett. We contacted our friends to organize assistance and compile information regarding Beckett's location. The urgency propelled us ahead and caused me to change personally. I was ready to battle and I was a leader, not simply a girl trapped in a risky game.
But I started to doubt as the date for our intended attack approached. Late at night, I would lie awake, the weight of obligation crushing down on me. If I failed them, what then? What if more suffering resulted from this choice?
One evening, Mara silently arrived while I was sitting by myself in the poorly lighted room we used for planning. She whispered gently, "Hey," sitting across from me. You seem to be really immersed in contemplation.
"I only... Leaning back in my chair, I said, unable to shake this sensation. "What if we turn out to be mistaken? What if chasing Beckett merely serves to aggravate things?
Mara started to soften in expression. "That is natural to feel that way. If you need to keep in mind why we are doing this even if we are about to incur a great risk. We cannot remain living in the shadows.
But what should happen if someone gets injured? My voice just above a whisper, I asked. "What if it's me?"
"That's a possibility we all have to face," she said with a calm look. But we are in this together. Lena, you have been really strong. You cannot lose sight of that.
Her comments really connected with me deep inside. I had fought through anxiety I had experienced before. This was the same. "You are correct." My actions cannot be driven by my worries.
"Exactly. Remember also that you are not alone in this. Whatever happens, we will have each other's backs, she told me.
Thank you, Mara; I appreciate your support. I really needed to hear that.
"Anytime," she said, a little smile breaking through her austere manner. "Let us now return to organizing. We are fighting to win.
The day the attack took place, there was obvious tension in the air. In the morning, our hearts were weary but determined we assembled. Every one of us was there for a different purpose and carried personal stakes in the battle against Beckett.
Finn said, his voice firm: "Remember the plan." "We go fast and forcefully." We cannot afford to come across as surprised.
I could feel my will strengthening as we headed to the place Beckett thought she was hiding. Every stride I made seemed as though it was toward recovering my life, my power. I participated in this game, not just a pawn now.
Fear mixed with excitement as we neared the abandoned warehouse that had become Beckett's hideout. This was it. Not now could one turn back.
"Are you ready"? Glancing at me, Jacob questioned with a mix of worry and resolve.
I inhaled deeply, the weight of the occasion slamming down on me. "I am," I responded, my voice more robust than I felt. "We are going to finish this."
Following the shadows as we negotiated the warehouse's perimeter, we moved in. My heart hammered in my chest, an adrenaline rhythm. The promise for change energized the electricity in the air.
Once within, we broke out into teams. Finn, Jacob, and I walked over the ground floor; Mara and a few others ascended to the second level. We had arranged this for maximum surprise, but as we progressed the mood changed.
Finn murmured frantically, his eyes darting around the poorly lit room. Lena "Something doesn't feel right."
"What are you referring to?" Feeling a sense of foreboding sweep over me, I asked.
Tension vibrating through his words, he advised, "Just keep your guard up."
We kept looking, but I shivered down my spine as we moved further into the warehouse. The weight of expectation permeated the silence, which was deafening.
Then suddenly anarchy broke out. A door sprang open, armed guards swarming into the hall with rifles drawn.
Lena: Move! Finn yelled, driving me out of the path just as bullets started.
Heart pounding, the adrenaline started to surge as I landed. We hurried for cover, but the guards were all around and I could feel the terror mounting.
Retreat! Finn yelled, and we staggered back trying to gather.
But as we were walking, I noticed Beckett grinning in the rear of the hall. He had been waiting for us; he had not been startled.
Did you truly believe it would be that simple? He teased, his voice resonating through the anarchy.
As I understood the scope of his trap, my blood turned frigid. We had entered this configuration exactly as it was designed. The fear I had battled returned, chewing at my determination.
"Lena!"— From above, Mara yelled, her voice cutting through the . "We must leave!".
I turned, urgency blazing within me. "We can't leave!" I shouted back. We must fight!
But I started to question Beckett once I turned around. Was sufficient strength available to guide us out of this?
I felt Finn's hand on my shoulder, steadying me as terror seemed about to strike. Lena, we really have to concentrate. He cannot be allowed to win. Recall our scheme.
His comments pierce the anarchy and rekindle the fire within me. "You're right," I murmured, resolving to pour through me. "We cannot let him take this from us."
Driven now, I turned to face the others. We get back together and fight back. Together, we are stronger and we cannot let him decide our future.
I felt the weight of responsibility on my shoulders as we settled into position, but this time it seemed like a mantle I could wear. I would fight for my buddies; I was a leader.
"Let's do this!." I yelled, brandishing my weapon.
The fight continued, yet within the anarchy I found clarity. I was prepared to recover what Beckett had taken from us; this was our struggle. I felt the anxiety start to fade with every step, then our unity's power took front stage.
I watched the will in my companions' eyes as we battled. We would not waver since we were in this together. Whether darkness hung over us, we would
