THE NEW BEGINNINGS
amantha's POV
The park was filled with the sweet aroma of caramel apples from a neighboring seller and the cool fall air that rustled the leaves. Leo and Adrian were both laughing as I watched them join each other on the playground. I had been longing for this moment—a sneak peek into the family I had dreamed we would become.
Adrian's laughter was infectious, and it warmed me to see him like this as Leo swung from the monkey bars and climbed the jungle gym. I couldn't help but smile when I thought of the self-assured, strong, and emotionally reserved man I had initially met. The man who was once a stranger but became my spouse and now a devoted father.
Mom, hurry up! Come along! Leo's face flushed with delight as he dangled from a bar and screamed out while swinging his tiny arms.
"All right, all right!" I answered, attempting to summon the same zeal. As I made my way through the obstacle course on the playground, I had an adrenaline rush.
"Look at you, Mom! You're an expert! Leo applauded, his laughter filling my ears with melodies.
"Wait until I reveal my secret move to you!" I pretended to go down the slide and lay in a heap on the grass as I said that.
Adrian shook his head and laughed. "Samantha Dawson, you're a mess."
I responded, playfully poking my tongue out at him, "Yeah, but I'm a fun mess."
"Let's investigate that!" With Leo's happy squeals resonating across the park, he rushed over, lifted him, and spun him around before setting him on his shoulders.
As we watched them together, I was overcome with gratitude. A sense of normalcy that had escaped us for so long was something I had long longed for. At last, we were working together to navigate the tangle of our new existence.
As the afternoon went on, Adrian and I sipped our coffees and Leo munched on a snack on a park bench. As Adrian relaxed, I noticed that the lines of stress on his face were starting to disappear. I took a sip and allowed the warmth to radiate through me before suggesting that we do this more frequently. "Even if it's only for a short time, it's nice to get away from the chaos."
With a contemplative expression on his face, he nodded. "I concur. I want Leo's early years to be typical. I also want us to have that.
I repeated, the word tasting nice on my tongue, "Normal." 'It feels good to say it aloud after everything we've been through."
The moment seemed brittle, as though our tranquility could be broken by the smallest disruption. Unspoken concerns were still looming large above us, and I could feel their weight. Adrian's relationship with Victor and Elena served as a continual reminder of the struggles we still faced.
"What about your family, Adrian?" Unsure of how to bring up the topic without depressing the atmosphere, I paused.
His relaxed demeanor wavered as he tensed up. "How about them?"
Although Victor's schemes have been thwarted, what about Elena? I don't want you to undervalue her; she is still out there.
"I understand," he said softly. However, I'm not going to allow her to rule our life any more. I've finished my run.
I answered, "Good," with a wave of camaraderie. However, we must be ready. I want us to work together to overcome this.
His eyes were angry as he turned to face me. "With each other. I just want to do this that way.
At that moment, Leo leaped from the bench and ran toward the playground, joining a group of children playing tag while his laughter was contagious. My heart grew larger with love and protectiveness as I observed him.
Adrian's face softened as he followed my eyes. "Hasn't he really adapted to this?"
With a full heart, I answered, "He has." "Seeing him happy is such a relief."
"Do you believe that we will ever be able to provide him with a secure home?" With a hint of fragility in his voice, Adrian inquired. "Do you think we can provide him with a safe space given everything we've been through?"
I extended my arm and squeezed his hand. "We are able to. We simply need to continue talking and resolving our problems. I have faith in us.
A timid smile lifted the corner of his mouth as he nodded. "You're correct. I'll stop at nothing to keep you two safe.
"Good," I replied, my resolve wavering. "Because we've become a team." I want to improve our collaboration for both of us, not only Leo. Let's begin anew and create something new.
My phone buzzed in my pocket before he could reply. When I took it out, my best friend Jenna had texted me. "Hey! I wanted to check in. Would you like to go out to supper later?
"Who is it?" Adrian looked over and inquired.
"Jenna," I answered, my heart pounding at the prospect of eating with her. "She wants to get together."
Adrian waved a dismissive hand and muttered, "Go." "You need to spend time with your pals. Here, we can manage things.
"Are you certain?" Since it was still a sensitive moment for us, I wanted to make sure he was at ease.
Yes, without a doubt. He nodded toward our son, who was now swinging as high as he could go, and said, "I'll keep Leo entertained."
I grinned, appreciating his support. "All right, I'll text her back."
A wave of normalcy swept over me as I composed my response. After all this time, I felt like I was finally embracing who I was.
We stayed together for a few more minutes before I got up to go. "All right, I'll be back in a few hours."
Adrian grinned. "While you're away, I swear we won't turn the house upside down."
I chuckled. "No guarantees, eh? I will return sooner rather than later!
I said goodbye and headed for the door, feeling lighter than I have in weeks. I felt a rush of exhilaration as I prepared to face the world outside our bubble.
