Chapter 52
Chapter 21
"I'm going to kill her," Belle hissed as she flopped at the bus seat in front of the one Grayson and I were on. Her face was twisted and anger and when Belle got mad, it was not a good idea to be around her.
"Kill who?" I asked. "What happened?"
"Yesterday, at the dance, I was talking to Thalia," Belle said. "I was telling her about Devon and how I still liked him and how he wanted to get back together with me. And this morning, when I went to my locker, I saw Thalia making out with Devon."
I looked at Grayson, who looked just as shocked as I felt. I looked at Belle once again. "She actually did that?"
Belle scoffed. "Yeah. And now, she is number one on my hit list. I can't believe she would do something like that."
"Well..." I said slowly. "I kind of can believe that. You should see how she acts when she's around only me."
Belle furrowed her eyebrows. "What do you mean?"
I sighed. "Whenever it was just me and her, she would constantly shoot me glares or snap at me. Then there was a conversation we had in the hospital. She found out Grayson was in a coma and heard that it was my fault, so when she visited him, she was saying he should break up with me."
"What?" Belle asked.
"You never told me that," Grayson said.
"I know," I said. "It slipped my mind. Anyway, when I questioned her about it, she said that she knows him more, which is totally not true. She hates me a whole lot though."
"How come you never told me?" Belle asked. "I would have kicked her to the curb."
"She was still a good friend to you," I said. "Or at least I thought she was..."
More students began piling onto the bus, two of them being Devon and Thalia. They were holding hands, so obviously, they were dating. I didn't know why Thalia would do that to Belle, or even why Devon would. He even told Belle he wanted to get back together with her, but Belle told him he had to prove it.
Grayson leaned over the seat. "You know," he said to Belle. "I have a feeling Devon is doing this to make you jealous. We've been friends before. He wouldn't move on that fast. Whatever you do, don't give them a reaction."
"Don't worry, I won't," Belle said. "If Devon really wants to get back together with me, he's going to have to make the first move. All I have to do is pretend I don't care."
"That's the spirit," I said as Devon and Belle walked in our direction.
"Hey, guys!" Thalia said in a fake-happy tone. "Mind if we sit behind you two?"
"Not at all," Grayson said, rolling his eyes when they weren't looking.
Belle shifted in her seat so she was facing us. "Nice to see you have a boyfriend, Thalia," Belle said and it actually sounded like she was genuine and how she didn't care at all. She was a really good actress. "Maybe now you can stop hitting on Poppy's boyfriend."
I snorted a laugh, but then covered my mouth. I didn't want to seem like a jerk in front of Thalia, even though she was one to me.
"I didn't ask for your opinion," Thalia snapped at me, causing me to frown. That was exactly my point. I wasn't a jerk to her, yet she snapped at me. Belle was the one who made the comment about her hitting on Grayson, not me.
"Thalia, can you stop being so mean to Poppy?" Grayson asked. "When has she ever done anything mean to you?"
"Well, for one, it was her fault you were in a coma," Thalia said.
"That was not her fault," Grayson said. "And that has nothing to do with you. So please, for the love of God, stop being a jerk to her."
Thalia seemed to be shocked to reply as Grayson turned back around. "Thank you," I mouthed to him so Thalia wouldn't hear.
Grayson smiled in reply as he reached into the pocket of his jacket before frowning. He checked his jeans' pocket for whatever he was looking for. He sighed, resting his face in his hands. "What's wrong?" I asked.
"I forgot my antidepressants," he said. "I didn't take my morning dose because I forgot, and I won't be able to take the noon one."
I reached into my backpack, pulling out a pill bottle. "I got your mom to give me an extra one just in case."
"Oh my god, thank you!" he said. "I love you so much!"
"I know," I said. "I'm awesome."
Our vice principal announced that we were now leaving for the field trip. Honestly, I was not excited at all. We were going to a haunted house because the school felt the seniors needed a break. Couldn't we have a break somewhere else? Like at the beach, or anywhere.
I placed Grayson's pill bottle back into my bag for safekeeping, then I wrapped my arms around his waist and snuggled into his chest. I was still tired and I was hoping I could get a few minutes of sleep before we got to the torturous place... I mean our destination.
"You comfortable there?" Grayson asked, wrapping on of his arms around me.
"Yes," I muttered. "You have a comfortable chest."
Grayson chuckled, sending a deep vibration in his chest. "Why, thank you, Flower."
"I love you," I said, just because I could.
"I love you, too," Grayson said, pressing his lips on the top of my head before resting his head on mine. I was able to get some of sleep before we arrived to the haunted house we were going in since it was about an hour away.
When all the seniors were off the bus, we gathered around the vice-principal, Mrs. Hughes. "I hope you will all have fun here," she said.
"Not me," I muttered under my breath, something only Grayson heard. He chuckled, putting his arm around my shoulder and pulling me closer to him.
"Here's how things will work," Mrs.
Hughes said. "Everyone will have to split up into groups from three to five. Once you have your group, tell me and you'll line up at the front. Find your groups."
I turned to Belle, who was on the other side of me. "Want to be with me and Grayson?" I asked.
"Sure," Belle said. "Let's go tell Mrs. Hughes."
The three of us walked to Mrs. Hughes, with Grayson pulling me because I was trying not to go. He knew I hated haunted houses. I didn't mind scary decorations and things like that. I only hated when things jumped out at me. I really, really hated it.
After telling Mrs. Hughes we were a group, we went to the line up, which was quite long already. Everyone else seemed excited to go in.
When we got near the front of the line, Mrs. Hughes walked up to us, followed by Thalia and Devon. "These two are going to join you three, okay?" Mrs. Hughes said.
As soon as Mrs. Hughes walked away, Thalia flashed us, more specifically me, a smirk. "Wow, what a coincidence," she said with fake enthusiasm. "It appears as if we got put in a group."
"Yeah, coincidence," I said, looking away from Thalia. I was getting so sick and tired of the looks she was giving me. Didn't she have anything better to do?
"It's a good thing you two got put with us," Belle said. "Grayson, Poppy and I aren't going to scream, so it will be entertaining hearing you."
"I'm not going to scream," Thalia said, narrowing her eyes at Belle. "If anyone is going to scream, it's obviously going to be Poppy."
There it was again. Whenever Belle insulted Thalia, Thalia would insult me. Even though I didn't say anything at all.
Grayson, thankfully, was getting quite annoyed with Thalia. "Thalia, for the love of God, stop being a jerk to Poppy, alright?! She's has never, never done anything mean to you. She's basically the nicest person you will ever meet and she doesn't deserve the attitude you're giving her."
"You don't have to snap at Thalia," Devon defended, crossing his arms. "It's between her and Poppy."
"Aw, how cute," Belle said. "Devon's standing up for his little girlfriend. That's adorable. If only Devon knew the truth about Thalia."
"What truth?" Devon asked.
"Oh, you don't know," Belle said, looking at Thalia with a raised eyebrow. "Oops. I guess I shouldn't have said anything."
The conversation was cut short when we reached the front of the line. The worker there told us we had to leave our bags outside before stepping in. Grayson looked at his watch and sighed. "Great," he muttered as we walked to the pile of bags from out school.
"What?" I asked.
"It's almost noon," he said. "I don't want to wait until later to take my... you know what."
"The haunted house won't take that long," I said. "You can take it after, okay?"
"Sure," Grayson said with a sigh. We walked back to where the others in our group was before the worker opened the door for us. Grayson had to take my hand and literally pull me in because I was trying my best to resist.
As soon as we walked in, the door slammed shut. I wished to say I was expecting it, but I wasn't, so I jumped a bit. Grayson snorted, wrapping his arm around my should to keep me close to him.
"Devon, I'm scared," Thalia said. And it was so obvious that she wasn't actually scared.
"Don't worry, I'll be here beside you," Devon said.
"Oh, gag," Belle muttered under her breath. "Let's just get this stupid thing over with." She began leading the way down the dark hallway, shaking her head.
The hallway took quite a while to go down. Right when we reached the end, Belle said, "Spider," right before a large spider jumped out at us. I was so close to screaming, but I kept it in.
Thalia, however, didn't.
"What happened to not screaming?" Belle asked.
Thalia didn't answer as we walked into a kitchen. In the middle was a large cauldron, which Belle peered inside. "Aw, gross!"
"What?" Grayson asked, making his way over there and looking inside. "Wow, that looks so realistic. Flower, come look at this."
"No thank you," I said.
"Too afraid?" Thalia asked.
"Says the one who screamed," I shot back before looking at Grayson. "What exactly is it?"
"You have to come check," Grayson said.
"No."
"Oh, come on," Grayson said. "You've played video games with decapitated heads."
I had to admit, that got me curious. I stood beside Grayson, looking inside. Grayson was right, it did look realistic. It was a decapitated head with the eyeballs floating around. The liquid was a blood red, and honestly, it was making me sick. "That's gross," I said, looking away.
"Can we finish the tour?" Devon asked with a bored look.
"So long as you look inside," Belle said with a smirk.
Devon shook his head. "No way. And it's not because I'm scared."
"Uh huh."
Devon gave Belle a smile, shaking his head. The smile he gave her told me that he liked her. It was the same smile Grayson gave me all the time. So why was he dating Thalia?
When Thalia noticed the smile, she grabbed Devon's arm. "Let's just go," she muttered, shooting Belle a glare before pulling him out of the kitchen,
The rest of us followed them, but kept our distance. Why was Thalia acting like such a jerk to Belle lately? Me, I understood, but Belle? Belle has been nothing but nice to Thalia.
Belle was able to see things before they popped out, nudging my side every time as an attempt to warn me. Since Thalia didn't see the warnings Belle gave me, she screamed every time.
Grayson would snort each time, claiming that it was child's play. He was as fearless as they came.
Honestly, the haunted house wasn't that impressive. The decorations were cool and realistic, but I don't know. There was just something about it that didn't make it creepy. It could be the fact that they didn't use actors as ghosts or zombies. It was only decorations.
When we got out, Grayson looked at his watch. "Perfect timing," he said. "Can you get my pills?"
I nodded as we walked to the pile of backpacks. I found mine and opened it, digging through to find the pill bottle. However, I couldn't find it. "What the...?" I could have sworn I put it in here.
"What?" Grayson asked, bending down beside me.
"Grayson, I swear I put it in here," I said. "You saw me put it in, right?"
"It's not in there?" Grayson asked. I gave him my bag and he looked, finding nothing as well. He groaned, dropping my bag. "You have got to be kidding me," he said.
"I put it in there," I said. "I promise."
"Poppy, I saw you put it in there," he said. "I just don't get where it went."
"Do you... Do you think someone took it?" I asked. "It's the only explanation."
"I don't know why someone would," Grayson said. "Your brother's here, right?" I nodded. "Can we tell him?"
I stood up with my bag, as did Grayson, before looking around. Tony was nearby, talking with a group of grade twelve teachers. I held Grayson's hand and pulled him to the teachers. "Tony, can we talk?" I asked.
"Yeah," Tony said, leading us to a place away from everyone. "What's up?"
"I had an extra bottle of Grayson's antidepressants in my bag," I said. "You know, just in case he forgot to bring his. And it's not in my bag anymore. But I swear, I put it back in my bag after showing Grayson I had it."
"It's true, I saw," Grayson said.
"So you think someone took it?" Tony asked.
"What else could have happened?" I asked.
"I'll tell the vice principal," Tony said. "Trust me, if someone did take it, they're going to be in huge trouble."
When Tony walked to Mrs. Hughes, I faced Grayson. "If someone did take it, why would they? And how would they know to look in my bag for your antidepressants? How would they even know you're on antidepressants?"
Grayson sighed. "I don't know."
The last group of students came out the haunted house, so Mrs. Hughes called everyone over. "Before anyone heads on the bus, we're going to have to do a bag search," she said, causing muttering amongst everyone. "Something very important went missing and if someone did take, they'll be in huge trouble. Everyone, get your bags, then line up."
Grayson and I were the only two who had our bags with us, so Mrs. Hughes did a quick 'search' -just so nobody would question why we didn't get searched. We then went on the bus, heading to the back. I looked out the window, watching as Mrs. Hughes searched the bags.
She got to Thalia and pulled something out, saying something to Thalia before allowing everyone else on the bus.
Mrs. Hughes handed what she found to Tony, who got on the bus and walked over to us. "I believe this belongs to you," Tony said, handing Grayson the pills before walking to the front of the bus.
"Who took it?" Grayson asked since he wasn't able to see out the window.
"Thalia," I told him.
"Thalia?" Grayson asked. "Are you serious?"
"I wish I wasn't," I said.
Thalia finally got on the bus, sitting in the last empty seat, which just so happened to be in front of me and Grayson.
"Thanks, by the way," Grayson said to her. "Thank you for stealing the pills."
Thalia turned to face us. "That thanks should be real."
Grayson scoffed. "How did you know about them?"
"I saw your girlfriend holding them out on the way here," Thalia said. "You shouldn't be doing drugs, Grayson. And she shouldn't be giving them to you. Some girlfriend."
"Thalia, it's celexa," Grayson said. I furrowed my eyebrows, wondering why Grayson was telling her. "Antidepressants. For, you know, depression?"
Thalia opened her mouth, looking very shocked. "You... you have depression?"
"Yeah, I do," Grayson said. "But you didn't know that. Instead, you decide to snap at Poppy because you think you know me better. Poppy's known since the beginning of school."
"I'm sorry," Thalia said. "I didn't know." She turned back in her seat and for a second, one second, I felt bad for her.
That second was short.
