Chapter 106 No, you.
Losing something special can make an impact big enough to change a person's life. Sometimes, it takes losing something important to find something you have been unconsciously needing all along.
In my case, this sometimes happened not too long ago. And this something? This something is my car. I may have lost my Lexus, but I did find Elliot. And he is something I need. I would have traded a hundred more Lexus to get back in the arms of Elliot Langston. I know I sound cheesy, but it is the absolute truth.
Okay. Just to be clear, I am not saying that he is the air I need in order to breathe. He is also not the universe I need for me to exist in. But what I am saying is that I like to think of him as my wifi. I can live without him, but that would be boring. Too boring. So really, I look at Elliot as him being my happy pill to keep me happy. Content.
I bought my Lexus the month after I left home. So, technically, a moth after I have graduated high school. Instead of using my college fund to go to a university, I have decided to simply use the money to buy my dream car.
I know it sounds crazy, spending a fortune for a car instead of university, but in all honesty, I was never an academic person. My passion lies in my photography. When El broke up with me a few years ago, I was so heart broken to the point that I do not even know what to do with my life anymore.
I wanted to go to the University of Southern California at the time, but when everything went down, I literally hit rock bottom. I had no idea what I want to do anymore. I have no hope, no dreams, no goals. I was lost. It felt like I was trapped in a body that I do not own. It felt like I was simply breathing and not actually living.
My family were around me, and there are people constantly surrounding me, but… I have never felt so alone. I wanted to die at that time. Maybe it was because of the heart break, or maybe because I just graduated high school and was really lost. But I wanted to end everything at that moment. I went to the famous Denovan Cliff and was planning to cross the finish line.
Obviously, I did not.
Because when I looked at straight in front of me, I had realized how beautiful the sunset was at the time. Golden rays with pinking hues. It was not cold, nor hot. It was the perfect time for me to realize that my passion was photography. That is why it was not hard for me to decide to simply buy the car and screw university because I wanted to chase my happiness. My passion for appreciating nature and really, life.
So, I bought my dream car. I traveled around the fifty states and took pictures. From the tourist spots to the locally beautiful ones. I had fun in the past few months. I honestly did. Photography became my healing therapy. It healed me and saved me from the darkness I used to call my friend. Photography made me love and appreciate everything around me, including myself. And my car, my Lexus was the one that made it happen.
Talking about my Lexus...
I grabbed my phone and called Elliot. It has been a few weeks since we got back together, and I have been in my happiest mood. I love Elliot. I tried trampling it down when we broke up a few years ago, but it never died down.
Hanging out with Elliot was familiar and interesting at the same time. Familiar because I have been with Elliot more than half of my life. And interesting, because even it was not a long time since we broke up, we are still different from who we were since that day. He is now a cop, after all.
After a few seconds of ringing, Elliot picked up. "What is up, pretty woman?"
I held in a giggle and said, "I have a few questions."
He chuckled. 'Ask away, babe."
I cleared my throat, 'First question, where are you?"
"I'm at the police station."
I gasped, "What happened?!"
"I work here, Cobie." I can hear him do an eye roll.
"Oh, right." I laughed awkwardly, "Are you working right now?"
"Yeah."
"Oh! I'm sorry for disturbing you-"
"It's okay," He cuts me off, "I'm just encoding some file. I have all the time in the world, love. What can I help you with?"
"Can I come over?"
I can feel him smirk, "Why?"
I rolled my eyes, "I have questions."
He chuckles, "Alright, do you want me to pick you up?"
"... but you're working."
He laughs, "Denovan has to be the safest town in North America."
That's a lie. And we both know it.
Denovan isn't a town where drug lords or serial killers would consider home, but it also isn't a town full of saints.
I grew up learning self-defense because my mom inherited a company full of assassins where my dad is basically the boss.
Elliot used to be a fighter in an illegal underground fighting ring like his brother, Charlie, and his father, Reed Langston. Although his mom, Chloe, is highly against it by the way.
But then, Elliot changed jobs to a more professional one. Nope, not as a police officer -not yet, at least, but he worked as an assassin under my family's company, D.A.C. Deadly Assassins Corporation.
Both jobs were risky, and I bet Chloe was against it. Which is why Elliot's a police officer now and Charlie's working in a daycare wearing a fairy suit. But then again, Elliot does do part-time jobs where it is required for him to wear a mermaid suit.
Langston's and suits. Huh.
"Aren't you hilarious," I chuckled while rolling my eyes, "You better be doing your job properly because I pay my taxes, Elliot."
"I'm just kidding love," I hear him laugh, "But do you want me to pick you up?"
"Again, you're working."
"I get off in a few minutes."
I looked at my phone and saw that it was almost six o'clock, "You know what? Let's just grab dinner together."
"Fine by me, I'll pick you up in 15."
"Gotchu." I nodded, "Alright, I'll see you later, okay?"
"Okie."
I waited for him to drop the call. But after a few seconds, I can still hear some clicking, probably him doing some encoding, from his background and so I trailed off, "Alright..."
"Alrighty."
I pursed my lips, "Okay, I miss you."
"I miss you more."
Another pause, "What are you doing?"
"I'm typing."
I rolled my eyes, "I mean what are you doing right now?"
"I just said I'm typing."
I held the groan threatening to come out, "I mean, why aren't you ending the call?"
"Why aren't you ending the call?"
"Touche."
"Touche indeed."
I chuckled. "Goodbye, El."
"Goodbye, love."
After a few more seconds, I sighed. "End the call."
"No, you end the call."
I rolled my eyes, "No, you end the call."
I heard an "oof", a short rustle, and then a familiar voice and said, "Adios Señorita!" Was that Officer Ramon?
Chuckling, I went to get ready.
Roughly ten minutes later, or something, I entered Elliot's truck and smiled to myself when I saw that he had returned the photo to where it was before I asked him about it.
"Where are we going to eat?" I asked while putting my seatbelt on.
"Are you craving something?"
"Chinese sounds good. What do you think?"
"Chinese sounds great."
