56.
ASLEENA'S POV.
"Oh my. Why did Robert have to do such an embarrassing thing?" Asleena immediately complained while in the car with Roger.
Moments ago, Benny had been unable to take Asleena home because he had to continue his work. Asleena was now in the car with Roger, sitting in the middle row of the car.
"I'm sorry for coming late, Mrs. Asleena. I had detained Robert in front of the restaurant when I witnessed his arrival. But he set me up instead," Roger tried to explain in a tone that implied guilt.
Asleena, who had been supporting herself on her fists while leaning her head, looked at Robert. Asleena frowned, confused as to why Roger suddenly felt guilty.
"I was wondering why you disappeared and didn't come," Asleena replied. "But then I remembered that if I think about it, Robert must have done all sorts of things to get into the restaurant. Somehow."
Roger nodded his head in agreement with Asleena's words.
"That's right. I saw him coming and even blocked his way. But somehow I think Robert has a really strange way of thinking," Roger replied.
"What did he do to you, Roger?" asked Asleena curiously. "You've been missing for quite some time. Even I was worried about you, afraid something bad had happened to you. Unfortunately I couldn't be sure by coming to you, because I had to make sure Robert didn't talk to Benny."
Roger then replied, "Robert pretended to ask for help because something happened to his car. I didn't believe him at first..."
Then Roger gave a short pause for his words. Roger could be heard taking a deep breath, then exhaling roughly. Roger recalled the events of a few hours ago that made him feel very upset.
"But she looks very convincing. In desperate need of help. Moreover, the restaurant's security guard also believed her words." Roger continued his explanation again.
Asleena immediately sighed harshly because she was very sick of hearing Robert's behavior. She felt that Robert had not changed at all. Her memory automatically replayed the memories of the time during her relationship with Robert five years ago, where Robert never behaved maturely.
"I didn't expect Robert to act so childishly. He should have improved himself while my relationship with him was over," Asleena retorted indignantly.
Roger briefly glanced at Asleena through the small rearview mirror above them. His eyes focused on the look of disappointment in Asleena's eyes. Also, Asleena's facial expression that looked so annoyed.
"I'm sorry to ask like this, Mrs. Asleena. What exactly happened to your and Robert's relationship?" Roger asked.
Asleena glanced at Roger and sighed heavily. Actually, Asleena was too lazy to talk about her relationship with Robert. Because every time she remembered it, Asleena also automatically remembered the moment when Robert left her. The moment when Robert was never there for every difficulty Asleena faced.
Including the moment when Robert only thought about himself and left Asleena for no reason. Robert didn't reply to Asleena's messages asking why he left her suddenly. Robert didn't pick up Asleena's calls, nor did he come when she was sick.
It got to the point where Asleena had an accident and lost both her parents, then met Benny. Robert still didn't show his whereabouts.
"It's a very annoying thing to have to tell," Asleena retorted, then let out a rough breath.
Roger was still quietly watching Asleena. Waiting for the continuation of Asleena's story.
"He just suddenly left me for no reason. I've repeatedly tried to chase after him, catch up with him, contact him, but he just got further away. He suddenly cut off all access to our communication and I couldn't reach him at all," Asleena replied.
Just from the way she explained it, Roger knew that there was a big disappointment in Asleena. Roger understood why Asleena tried so hard to avoid Robert. She didn't even want to see Robert's face.
"Mrs. Asleena has never told anyone about Robert, including me and Benny. I suspect your disappointment in him is very great," Roger commented. His gaze remained straight on the road ahead.
Asleena nodded her head before sighing heavily once again. Her sitting position was changed to a more comfortable one. But her gaze did not move from the view outside the car window.
"That's right. Someone like him is not worth telling anyone about," Asleena replied. Her tone sounded complaining.
"Now I can understand your feelings, Mrs. Asleena. You must have been very burdened while harboring feelings all this time," Roger replied. "I feel relieved too. Now that I know how you feel, I can carry out Mr. Boss's responsibility to take care of you."
Asleena curved a faint smile after hearing Roger's words. She felt lucky to have someone like Roger by her side.
"I know you must be able to hold yourself together while Robert tries to come after you constantly. I'll help take care of you," Roger continued.
"I can actually take care of myself pretty well, Roger. But I thank you for being so kind," Asleena replied while giving him that faint smile.
Roger just smiled formally at Asleena through the small rearview mirror above them. Roger knew that Asleena didn't really mean it when she said that sentence just now. For many times since Robert's arrival, Roger had noticed a persistent anxiety on Asleena's face.
"Of course I do that. It's my pleasure," Roger replied.
"Ah..." Asleena complained as she leaned her head back against the chair. She recalled the conversation with Robert and Benny about the package box sent to her. "Hey, Roger, you've made sure that the package box sent to you from Robert was wasted and can't be found, right?"
Roger raised both eyebrows in surprise and wonder at the question. Moments ago Asleena had given him a request to dispose of Robert's box. Roger thought Asleena had forgotten about the box.
"Of course you have, Mrs. Asleena. What's wrong?" Roger asked. Seeing the troubled look on Asleena's face made Roger immediately know that something unpleasant had happened.
"When Robert came in earlier, he was talking to Benny about sending me a package box," said Asleena.
Roger was so shocked that he almost lost concentration all of a sudden. At the same time Roger just saw someone crossing in front of his car, so he suddenly hit the brakes. That made Roger and Asleena jerk forward simultaneously.
"Oh my God, Roger!" Asleena spontaneously said in surprise.
Roger immediately raised his face showing a surprised expression. At first, he looked ahead to see how the person who wanted to cross was doing. After seeing that the person had resumed his steps and was unharmed, Roger looked back quickly.
"Mrs. Asleena, are you okay?" Roger asked.
Asleena closed her eyes briefly and let out a long sigh. When she opened her eyes again, Asleena immediately looked at Roger with a shocked expression.
"I'm fine," she replied, nodding her head. "What happened just now?"
Roger replied, "Someone suddenly wanted to cross the road. It's ridiculous, there was no lighted crosswalk sign, but he suddenly ran."
"What was his condition? He didn't get hit by this car, did he?" Asleena asked frantically.
"Absolutely not."
Asleena breathed a sigh of relief after hearing Roger's words. Soon the car was moving again.
"Gosh... why are there so many surprising events today?" complained Asleena.
Roger felt a bit guilty about Asleena. "Would you like to continue your story, Mrs. Asleena?"
Asleena nodded her head. "Yes, that's the point. I was immediately forced to lie by saying I didn't receive any shipment from Robert."
"That's why you wanted to make sure Robert's shipment box couldn't be found to avoid Robert finding it?" Roger asked for confirmation.
"That's right. I had to convince myself that Robert couldn't bother me for too long," Asleena replied.
Roger then replied, "It should be impossible to find the box. Unless Robert has the insane mindset to keep searching for it."
