Disgusted
We both stand in silence for a few moments, there are so many things you can explain away when it comes to creepy facts surrounding places. But a creepy dark basement in a huge criminal's house isn't something you can, what the heck could be down there?!
'That doesn't seem like a very normal thing to have in a house." I say trying to break any terrified vibe we had going on here, Jackson looks over at me shaking his head before reaching into his pocket.
He pulls out his phone and turns his torch on, this beginning to illuminate the first few steps of the creepy staircase. My brain began to try and rationalise what may be happening, maybe Mario didn't know about this, and it was here from the previous owners. But let's be honest, I was able to find this place from just taking a very step around the house, he must have done that thousands of times while living here.
Or maybe he wasn't hiding anything sinister down there, I know Mario is a huge criminal and probably has some of the darkest secrets around, but maybe he just used to for storage of totally normal household items.
But when we both begin to take steps closer to the hidden room, the smell of what I can only describe as death fills my senses. I had to hold my hand to my nose which didn't help, as much as Jackson was trying to hide it, he also screwed up his face. With all the evidence, which was now piling up, I think I can also throw the totally normal household supplies out of the window too.
'Ally, are you sure this is something you want to see, we have no idea what could be down there?" Jackson asks his foot on the first step, but I was still behind him, my hand gripping his arm for dear life. 'I have been doing this job for a few years now, I have seen some terrible scenes that have stayed with me for years, I don't want to put you through that." He says now confirming what I was thinking myself, there could be some really dark things down there.
As much as I wanted to tell him he could go down there alone, there was this big part of me that knew I couldn't allow him to head down this creepy basement all on his lonesome.
'Thank you for taking me into consideration, but you and I are a team Jackson, if you're having to go through whatever is ahead of us, I'm right by your side." I smile which did take him by surprise, but he soon does smile and reaches up to take my hand in his.
Without speaking, he takes the second step while my foot is placed on the first stone step. I'm unsure if it's due to the smell which was engulfing us or the horrors which were playing around my mind wondering what may be down there, but I couldn't shake the sickening feeling that pulsed through my body after my shoe made contact with the step. My head was telling me to take Jackson up on his offer and turn around to not see this, but my heart kept repeating that I couldn't let him go through this alone.
With every step closer we would take, that feeling would grow along with the smell of the room. After what felt like an eternity, Jackson places his foot down to the ground level where the sound of his foot coming in contact with a puddle soon gets both our attentions. He begins to shine his torch to get a better look, where I was able to make out a brick wall at the far end of the room.
'Please don't tell me Mario had a mini dungeon in his house." I say looking around the very dark room, could this have been where he's been keeping my dad?!
'It sure seems like it, if this is a room, there has to be a light switch." Jackson replies now skimming the walls for a switch, which he soon finds and is able to illuminate the room a tiny speck more.
There was a tiny light dangling from the ceiling, which you could see wasn't fitted correctly in the first place. The little light which it did provide, shown to us what Mario had been keeping down here. On the wall to the light where two chains, both nailed to the wall with what looked like holes where your hands would be placed. Beside the chains on the floor, stood one plastic plate with the tiniest amount of food, which looked mouldy and hardly touched.
Seeing this caused my heart to sink, I would be a dummy if I didn't realise who had been the last person to be placed here. My own father.
'I know where that smell is coming from, Mario had more than likely got some of his men to build this basement which probably wasn't designed to be here when the house was. This means the sewage pipe from this house is right here, where water is being dripped out from this tiny hole." Jackson explains pointing his torch closer to the pipe, where I could see tiny droplets of water falling from the pipe and landing on the floor.
'Why would someone want to treat another human being like this?" I say having to force my voice not to crack when I spoke, just imagine what not only my father but other people have had to endure while being kept down here.
'You may now start to understand why Mario is spoke about the way he is, you may want to try and defend him by saying his past is the reason he is like this. But that monster had to have been born like this, no one turns this evil overnight." Jackson says while taking photos of this place with his phone, I guess we'll need to see photos for later and may pick up on things we can't see right now.
I sigh and begin to pace around the room, allowing Jackson to get on with what he does best. But as I glance down to the floor near the chains, my eyes go wide on what I see. Stood near the plate was a necklace, the one which I had grown up seeing on a daily basis.
'My dad's chain." I say walking over to it, but before I could pick it up, Jackson stops me with his arm.
He knells down and takes a photo of the chain before reaching into his pocket and pulling out what looks like a sandwich bag and gloves.
'We don't want your fingerprints to tamper with the evidence, not only that but if we send this to your mother, they will do a test and find yours and know you've been here." He says picking up the chain with the bag before dangling in front of my face, I also knew I couldn't touch the bag because they'll probably test that too.
'That's definitely his, it was his fathers and when he past, his mother gave it to my dad as a keepsake. My father never takes it off, only when it's in the shop to get cleaned but then he's watching it like a hawk." I say looking at the chain in front of me, it was in a shape of J, it was my grandfather's initial but also, my own fathers.
'This only confirms what we already know, your father has been kept here while Mario has him." Jackson explains looking down at the chain, but I shake my head, I needed to get out of this place.
I walk towards the stairs and begin to climb them; the smell of death and light soon fill my vision as I climb to the top. Jackson closes behind me, once I finally reach the normal part of the house, I have to place both my hands on the table with my head down. I knew when walking into this whole investigation, that I would be disgusted on what I may find out about how my dad is behind treated. But there was nothing that would prepare me to see that, my father hasn't done anything to deserve being treated like that!
Jackson's arm is soon placed around my shoulders to give me some comfort, but I soon turn around and place my head on his chest crying. In an instant, I was wrapped tightly in his arms while I stood there and cried.
