Not so strong
Chapter 24
Not so strong
I stood in anticipation as I waited for Myra to come. The day has finally arrived to begin the much awaited project. Crest Oils franchise was about to be born to life and I'm to be known as the pioneer in all of the state. I checked my wrist watch again and looked towards the entrance of the airport. Myra was running late. She had promised to be here on time but she hasn't shown up, which by the way is quite unusual of her. I took out my phone and was about to call her when she called my name aloud.
'Royce!" She said, waving as she quickened her pace. Even though she was running late, she still looked composed and was elegant as ever. She removed her fashion glasses and put it in the front of her blouse, exposing her cleavages a bit. She smiled as she finally got to be exposing her beautiful set of teeth. Oh man, what's up with the description, a voice said in my head but I deadened it.
'I know I'm late, please forgive me," she said as soon as she got to my side. I noticed that she had only her handbag with her but then I saw her assistant behind her. She bowed to me and I smiled politely. 'Traffic was hectic today, I really don't know why. I left home early," she said as we got in line for the attendant to check our documents
'I almost thought you cancelled," I said stepping in line after her.
'You know I'd never do that to you Royce. I promise to give you all the help that you need and that is exactly what I'm going to do. You know I don't get back on my word," she said smiling.
'I sense some pride Miss Cullen," I said and she laughed. It didn't take a while before the check-in was complete and we both found our way to the gate. We collected our seat numbers and we both boarded the plane. Left to me, I'd have preferred to take my plane but she insisted that we take the business flight, that it made her feel comfortable.
'This is 28," she said and took her seat. 'What's your seat number?" She asked intently, taking her seat.
'I think my seat is next to yours," I said, taking the next seat to hers. She dipped her hands into her back and brought out her iPad tapping into it furiously. Seeing that she seemed busy, I also took out my laptop too and decided to work on the last project I was working on. About 10 minutes into it, the pilot began his usual talks and told everyone to tighten their seatbelt. I brought the buckle around and fastened my belt. I noticed that she was holding her belt too tightly as the plane lifted up.
Most people find the first part difficult so I understand her anxiety. However, I noticed that even after the plane had steadied and was now in the air, she still won't leave the seat belt and her breathing wasn't steady. Her shoulders were tensed and her knuckles were tight, I thought it would pop out
'Myra?" I called but she just grumbled without answering to my calls.
'Please tell me this isn't what I think it is,' I said smirking.
'And what's that?" She asked in between taking shallow breaths.
'That you are afraid of flying in the air,"I said in hushed tones..
'I wouldn't say I'm afraid, I'm not just a big fan of flying in the air but I really don't have a choice do I?" She said in between her clenched teeth. I realised for the first time that she was human after. I saw fragility in a woman who had utmost steeze and Composure. Someone who could talk to a room full of executives and men of power without wavering was afraid of plane turbulence. Was this why she wanted a business class plane.
'Hey," I said but she had her eyes closed shut. And I would have liked to laugh but she seemed too scared for me to do so. Moreso, I would be too petty for me to do that. I closed my laptop and tucked it in my bag and then moved close to her.
'Myra," I called again, placing my hand in hers. She opened her eyes and looked at me. I steadied my hands on her and began to rub the back of her hand, trying to calm her down. Her tight face softened a bit as she gazed at me.
'This plane is one of numerous I used for business. Yes, I didn't tell you but believe me when I say it is been directed by the best pilots money can get. Nothing is going to happen to us or to you. This is nothing compared to what you've done. Remember how you even threw Selena out of the hotel?" I added to ease the tension.
'Oh!" She chuckled. 'Why bring that up now when I'm thousands of feet in the sky?" she said. She maintained her gaze on me and after a while, her breathings steadied a bit.
'That's more like it," I said. ‘Don't think too much of it and relax Myra, I'm right beside you, nothing would happen to you, I said out of nowhere." Myra's face softened more and she placed her other hand on mine, squeezing it hard. I hope she won't make too much of a meaning into this..
‘I didn't know you were this soft, I feel better now Royce. Thank you," she said. I looked at the side of the plane and signalled to one of the attendants. She went inside and came back minutes later. She had with her a tray with all sorts of drinks and snacks. She got to us and dropped it.
'What are these things for? 'She asked surprised, her hands still on mine.
'These? They are for you. Would you like me to pour you a glass of champagne?' I asked but she declined.
'Water would do something to calm my nerves," she said. I poured her a glass of water and she took it. After a while, the grip she had on my hand relaxed and her shoulders eased too. However, she still feels uncomfortable whenever the plane experiences turbulence. I returned to the work I was doing on my laptop.
It wasn't long before I felt a thud on my shoulders and I froze. I realised that she had fell asleep. She snuggled closer to my side, holding me closely
I thought about pushing her gently to sleep on her own but discarded it as I didn't want her to disturb her sleep or risk waking her up and make her feel tensed up again.
The scent of her perfume wafted into my nose and I inhaled it softly. It smelled like a garden of flowers. Staring at her up close, I saw a vibrant young lady who looks sturdy on the outside but was as soft as anything on the inside. I checked my wrist watch hoping that we'd get to our destination on time before I get too comfortable with having her close to me or worse, want more.
