The confrontation
Chapter 15
The confrontation
I arrived at the gala party feeling grumpy as hell. It's been days since Danni called but I still haven't forgotten the jest in his voice. After that call that day, Crest Oils had sent necessary documents for signing and all the onboarding sessions went well and it was really nice. In fact, if not for Myra's snitchy attitude, I should've burst through the door in a celebratory mood. However, I cannot, not when Danni's word kept repeating itself in my brain.
I scanned the room and saw my seat. As expected, I was paired with some of the major leads in the Oil business. Ordinarily, I'd be on top of the moon as I find this out but reverse is the case. I got in besides them and muttered some greetings before seating.
I heard a laugh that sounded like hers and when I turned my head, it was her indeed. She was having a conversation with one of the executives at Carl's company, also with are are important oil tycoons. Just how many people did she know and how many of them did she rat me out to? I thought. ‘Maybe she didn't rat you out at all and Danni is just playing his normal games,' I thought but shrugged. Danni knew too much to think that he was just taking a random cheap talk.
I took one second look at her and this time she turned too, her face brightened when she saw me but I maintained a tight face that immediately made her look surprised but I looked away. Throughout the evening I was mostly rooted in my seats avoiding conversation,in case she brought up the matter. For every opportunity, I made sure to take a separate route. Things got worse when I saw Danni and Myra talk a bit. At that moment,I concluded that the both of them knew each other at a deeper level. No wonder Danni that much!
Finally tired of seating, I stood up and socialized a bit, and got myself a glass of champagne. I was sipping it while taking a look around the room when she waltzed towards me. I tried to evade her but she called out my name, making it difficult to not answer her.
'Royce, What's going on? I have a feeling that you've been avoiding me. Am I right or I'm just being paranoid,' she said, looking worried .
I turned to her with a grim expression on my face. Her face looked so innocent that I almost believed that she didn't know anything. 'Nothing is wrong Myra. I just prefer to be on my own tonight, that's not too much to ask for right?"
'No, there's something wrong. You'd never give me that kind of reply on a normal day. I thought we were making some progress with our… friendship?" She asked.
'Must you know everything Myra? I just told you that everything is fine! What else do you want to know?" I said tightly and a little too loud, making those beside us raise their brow.
'You are embarrassing me Royce. What exactly did I do wrong? Why can't you be manly enough to tell me what I did wrong, why keep it bottled up like a woman," she said and that got me angry. The nerve of this woman! Who does she think she was looking and talking down on me? All of this because she did me a single favour.
'You really have the mouth right? Fine if you want to know, then I'll tell you. Tell me exactly why everyone knows my business. Why did you go around rattling my business to everyone who cared to listen ?" I said and her frown deepened.
'Tattle you out? I don't know what you are talking about Royce. What business are you talking about? You need to stop speaking in circles and go straight to the point. Tell me exactly what's going on. Don't make this too difficult." She said getting angry. She was going to change the table when it was her who erred?
'Oh, you are getting angry after what you did. You have the nerve Myra Cullen. Acting all mighty as if you were just being kind and caring about your partner. I didn't know you are a bird and that all you do is to sing"
'You know what, fine! Keep it to yourself. I don't even want to know what's going on again. What's your deal? One minute you are nice, the next you are all guided up like some fortress. Suit yourself Royce,I don't care any longer," she said and spurned around, leaving me on the spot. She hadn't taken up to three steps when I caught her hands and dragged her to the nearest corner.
'Listen to me young lady, you don't get to be deviant around me like some spoiled child. You want to know what you did? I'll tell you then. Tell me Myra, why did you go tell Danni about the favour you did for me? You told him everything. That I didn't merit the contract" I said
'Danni de Black? I didn't tell him anything about you." She said, her expression unreadable.
'Yes you did, because if you didn't, he wouldn't call me. The stupid ass called me, disguised as if he wanted to congratulate me and then suddenly, he mentioned how you had a hand in…helping me get it. Not only that, he told me how you've been going around, telling everyone who cared to listen that you came through for me." I fired up in anger.
'I swear to god Royce. I didn't tell him anything. We've only spoken like once or twice. I have no business with him. And what, I told everyone who cared to listen? Really Royce, you believe some cheap, second class drug dealer to me, your ally? I didn't take you to be that dense Royce. And this is the reason why you've been so walked up all evening?" She asked
'It's not enough to get me walked up?" I asked.
'Listen to me Royce Robben. I went out of my way to get you that contract in a way to show you that I care about our mutual trust but you think I'm a snitch? Really? That's what you think of me?
'If you are not a snitch, then tell me why and how Danni got so much info without even up to 24 hours!"
'I don't know Royce. You know what, believe whatever you want to! I really don't care. It's clear to me now that no matter what I do or say, you don't trust me. Clearly, you really aren't ready for this," she said and with that stomped outside angrily
