Chapter # 14
"Yo,"
Chuckling at the emerald-eyed man, De Villiers waved his hand and approached him while he exhaled loudly.
"You need much more men or something else if you want to scare me, De Villiers," Nathaniel smirked but soon he glared.
"And asshole, you told them to get me on my knees?" He hissed but he couldn't help but to laugh a little.
"Just wanted to rile you up,"
Followed by De Villiers, Amada also rushed.
"Ah, you are no fun."
Wrapping her arms around De Villiers who placed his hand over her shoulder to keep her against him.
"So who were they?" Nathaniel sighed.
Moving circles around Zariah's shoulders to soothe her and not be vexed about a trivial matter.
She stared at him in disbelief. It was a damn staged scene for him while a building collapsed before their eyes.
"Oh, just some robbers we found. We gave them a job to scare a certain man," Amanda shrugged, ending in a playful smile, winking at the couple.
"Clean up this mess now," Nathaniel sighed, not wanting them to get caught amid this mess.
"Yes, yes,"
A few people who came from the same van started to clean up the mess, removing the bodies and stains of blood.
Resting his hands in his trouser, Nathaniel was contemplating the sight with his deadly whistling, inspecting the area while speaking.
"I guess you are too happy with your marriage. Seems like you have put on a few pounds,"
Glancing over his shoulder, he pointed at Amanda too.
"You too, Amanda,"
"We are just too happy," She giggled, staring at De Villiers who was now her husband with mesmerization.
She never anticipated that he would be such a darling partner, she expected the same darkness from him but it wasn't.
"And two too,"
De Villiers smirked, pointing at Zariah who was in his shirt and blushing from embarrassment.
Still not used to sharing a jovial chat and his teasing glances made her abashed.
"From that, give me your shirt, De Villiers," Nathaniel ordered, holding his hand out after they were done making the place spotless.
"Why?"
"I need to go to work. See this site, I am going to be too busy for the time being now." He informed nonchalantly.
"They will bring them to our hospital, I am going to join the rescue team,"
"I see."
"Plus, I want to hear what people will say about the blast there. Take Zariah with you,"
He ended, taking De Villiers' shirt and wearing it after pushing his hair behind.
"Where?"
"To Prince and Cinzel,"
They frowned, "Have you forgotten how violent she is?"
"Do you want her to kill you for lying to her about Zariah's death?" Amanda asked teasingly, earning a chuckle from him.
"Worth a shot,"
They nodded, not thinking much and were about to take Zariah with them who paused and stared at Nathaniel for a moment.
"Take care, Zari," He smiled faintly, waving his hand at her.
But, it felt cold.
She felt odd.
Probably because she wasn't used to such types of greetings.
Or perhaps, the interactions and the way they did things were not to their liking.
Whatever it was, she was in distress.
"You too, Nathaniel," She whispered wholeheartedly to which he hummed and left.
He joined the rescue team, helping them take the ones who were lifted alive and reached the hospital hastily.
"Nathaniel!"
Keith came hastily, utterly perturbed about his friend, checking if he was okay or not.
"Are you alright?! News came about the blast. We were so worried about you,"
He asked but sighed in relief when there was no sign of injury except for a few scratches from jumping through the window.
"Yeah- yeah, I am fine, I was not in the building when it happened," He hummed.
Regarding his slight wounds as 'got them while helping others'.
"My Lord, whose evil eye had cursed us? First the plane crash and now this blast. Is Amsterdam not safe anymore?"
Mark, who also reached on time, continued his pretense sorrowfully.
"Who knows? Let's see what the police have to say about that." He sighed.
"I think the crash and this blast are done by the same person and not only mindless but an intricate plan,"
"That is not our job, our job is to save those who got alive. I have come with the rescue team too. Let's get to work, now," Nathaniel ordered strictly, motioning to them to get to work right away.
"Yeah, you are right,"
He was treating his patients one after another and stopped at the eight years old girl.
He remembered her, she was on the same floor as him and used to play in the apartment's garden most of the time.
"You?"
He paused, narrowing his eyes out of compassion, disliking kids being involved in their resentment and monstrosity.
"Save me... please," The bleeding whimpered, sobbing badly.
His sister flashed in his eyes when he saw her, shattering his heart.
... Back when Nathaniel was eleven. They were in the hospital, he was eleven and got his leg broken due to a fight with Prince.
He shook his head and was about to speak but the door opened as someone entered holding a gun.
Before he could speak or do something, they shot Persephone, his seven years old sister, right before his eyes.
Staining his mind and memory with a trauma he could never recover from.
"PERSEPHONE!!"
His life was ruined that day and he failed to protect his family...
His jaw clenched remembering his sister and rushed to the child's side, he won't let this happen again.
"I definitely will, don't worry," He enunciated, holding her hands before treating her foremost.
"I know all cures, I won't let you die too, kid,"
He won't fail in treating his patients anymore. He would grasp all cures, he would study more, learn everything.
But won't lose.
After treating, he was exhausted, the rush and atmosphere of anguish was disturbed for all of them.
Rubbing his temples, he was taking a moment before going back as Keith came.
"Wow, I had never seen you emotional towards a patient. Is the amount of patients hurting you?" He asked with a sigh, offering him a cup of coffee.
"Seeing her reminded me of my late sister, she died at seven,"
Nathaniel shared his personal life for the first time. He always said whenever they asked, never mentioned what type of life he led.
"I-I am so sorry to hear that, Nathaniel. You okay? I could pitch in your place, you rest for some time," He offered hastily.
Understanding he might need some moment before continuing.
"Hmm, I think I need it,"
Nodding, he laid down on the couch to empty his mind momentarily before continuing his work.
Keith left to cover up his work while he stared at the building, curling his hand in a fist.
"Curse them and their lives,"
That sight, that day, that moment. He would never forget it.
A ferocious fire burned in his eyes, fumes emitting from him by the merest thought of it as he growled internally.
The second main source for him to live after Zari.
"Those who ruined my home twenty four years ago will pay dearly for their sins."
