Chapter 18: Why You Rejected Me
"It shouldn't be like this. How could it be?" Soros' face was filled with skepticism.
Anna saw his expression for the first time and couldn't help but look at it for a moment longer.
Taking advantage of her lapse into contemplation, Soros hugged her tightly, and whispered in her ear, "I won't let that happen, Anna. You have no choice. I know you're crazy about me. How could you leave me?"
He thought Anna was faking it or he was going to break down. It was obvious that she loved him so much that she was willing to give her life to him.
Anna unexpectedly froze as she was trapped in his arms. It was a warmth she had missed for years.
She thought the whole thing was incredible. There was a time when Soros was too scary for her, and now that he was desperate, it made her feel a little uneasy.
Anna began to doubt herself. After all these years, was her love just a habit?
She said nothing and waited quietly for Soros to let go of her arm and walk away just as he was about to speak.
She went to the NYU.
She looked at the entrance to the school and wondered what she was waiting for. She had just watched in silence.
Shortly after, a familiar figure came into her sight. It was Joey.
He seemed to have seen her car and walked towards her. In that instant, Anna almost wanted to start the car and just leave.
The thought was fleeting, but she was startled.
In all these years, no one but Soros had been able to make her have any mood swings.
Apparently, Joey was the exception. And as they spoke upstairs that day, her emotions swung at his words.
She calmly lowered the window, "What's wrong?"
Joey gave her a skeptical look and immediately recovered, "I'm sorry, I thought you were wating for me."
Anna was about to say that he was overthinking it when she realized that he had pulled hundreds of bills out of his pocket.
He handed her the money, "I'm sorry to pay you back now. I don't think you have a credit card."
Of course, Anna didn't need him to pay her back, but the way he tried to put a line between them annoyed her.
Now even Joey was turning her down!
As Anna was about to get angry, Joey's clear voice came back, "I know it's not much, but I paid a lot for it. I know you're rich, but if I don't pay you back, I won't have peace of mind."
Anna gritted her teeth, but her heart softened. She held up her hand for the money, "Okay."
Joey nodded, "Are you looking for someone? Or do you want to go in for a tour? I can be your tour guide!"
Anna gave him a cool look. Joey scratched his head, "What?"
Why was she looking at him like that? Every time she looked at him like that, he wanted to fall to his knees!
That's when he heard Anna say, "Get in the car."
