Chapter 37: Ex-boyfriend Messing Up
There was a knock on the door and I looked up to see Yvette walking in.
I closed the file, "How's the investigation into Silvan's things going?"
"It's almost done."
I nodded, signaling to her to continue.
"You asked me to put someone at headquarters earlier and he has cut the buck and collected many of Silvan's problems. Over the years, Silvan has used his position to embezzle at least $300 million."
"$300 million?" I raised an eyebrow, "He's got a lot of nerve."
Yvette also sneered, "He has indeed been careful, but everyone will be negligent at times. If one does something bad, there will be flaws no matter how meticulous one is, it just depends on whether someone wants to find out."
I knocked on the table, "Greed has no limits. Silvan is leading himself to his death. In fact, he dared to do so because he thought he had a backer, but what if that backer also left him?"
Yvette asked me, "Boss, have you made any progress in Serena's matter?"
I was a little distressed, "The house is bought, but I don't know how I can get Serena to go there. The most important thing is that it better be done without a trace so that I won't be involved."
Yvette was sharp-witted at this point, "Boss, why don't you use Neil?"
I was surprised.
"It seems to me that Neil and Silvan are both quite handsome..." Yvette suggested.
I coughed lightly, "You mean for me to use the honey-trap?"
"Boss, that's what I mean."
The honey-trap...
"Get Neil here for me."
"Yes."
Neil struggled when I told him about the plan, "Boss, do you really want to do this?"
I waved my hand, "It's just an idea I had. If you don't want to do it, I won't force it..."
"I will do it."
I raised an eyebrow.
"I've been repenting after doing that to you last time when I was drunk. Although you and Elias have forgiven me, I'm still not at ease. I've also said that I will do whatever you ask me to do."
Looking into Neil's sincere eyes, I realized that I had won the bet, as did Elias.
Neil might be the successor to Yvette.
"Go ahead and do it. Be careful yourself." I smiled, "When we get rid of Silvan, the days ahead will be easier."
"Yes."
I handed Neil the keys and accompanied him to the house for him to familiarize himself with the environment.
Standing in front of the floor-to-ceiling windows on the thirty-sixth floor and looking down, we had a wonderful view of everything. Neil was stunned, "How many years do I have to work to afford a house here?"
I had read his profile, "Your family is not bad, otherwise your family would not have sent you to study abroad."
Neil smiled shyly, "How can I compare with you, Boss? My family has sent me abroad to study with great difficulty, hoping that I would have a bright future, but I almost ruined my career."
"You have narrowly escaped self-destruction and you must thank Elias for that."
"He is my savior, as are you, Boss. Thank you for giving me another chance."
"Actually, I have not considered the situation enough. Although I allowed Elias to start from the bottom like you guys, I couldn't help but want to get close to him and see him, which caused you to misunderstand that he was a kept man."
"Boss, I have something to say."
"Go ahead."
"I don't think Elias is an ordinary person. At least, his talent, his open-mindedness, his way of dealing with people, and everything about him make him not seem to me like someone without a college degree; on the contrary, I think he's hiding his light under a bushel."
Hiding his light under a bushel.
Ian had "warned" me about this before.
Neil weighed his words before he said, "Boss, may I take the liberty of asking how you and Elias first met?"
"It was fate." I didn't really want to talk much about it.
"You'll be staying here for now. Let me know if you need anything. There's everything in the house, so you don't have to buy anything else."
To my surprise, I bumped into Ian in the elevator as I left.
He saw me coming out of Neil's house and looked extremely shocked.
To my surprise, I bumped into Ian in the lift as I left.
He saw me coming out of Neil's house and looked extremely shocked.
We both got into the same lift.
"Just give it to me straight." I felt uncomfortable with his stare.
"You... and Neil," he seemed to have trouble saying it, "Jacqueline, aren't you married? You already have Elias, but you..."
He looked so distressed that he must have thought I was slutty and that I slept around.
I hadn't checked that Ian had property here too.
That was a miscalculation.
Ian had been "brought" by Silvan. Although he did not act like Silvan's stooge, perhaps he was playing a trick to confuse me.
I had to be careful.
"Mr. Yates, do I need you to worry about my private affairs?" I attempted to brush it off, at least until I got Silvan down.
Besides, Ian's opinion didn't matter to me right now.
"Jacqueline," he suddenly called my name in a deep voice.
From the time we had met again, he had treated me with either guilt, affection, or grievance, and had never been as stern as he was now.
"Mr. Yates, if you have something to say..."
Before I could finish my sentence, Ian had already placed his arms to keep me between him and the elevator.
He looked down with distress in his eyes and something else that seemed different.
"Jacqueline, from the time I came back and found out you were married, my whole heart was broken. Then I wondered if you were getting back at me because of the affair I had with Cheryl Wilson back then."
"I desperately tried to convince myself that in fact, you didn't love Elias at all, that you just wanted to marry someone, and that in fact you still wanted me inside your heart."
"You are overthinking..."
"Jacqueline, listen to me first." Ian interrupted me, his dark eyes overflowing with tears, and he did look a bit pitiful.
"I didn't mean to betray you back then."
I raised my eyebrows slightly.
Did he have a reason for cheating?
I'd like to see how he would explain it.
"At that time, Cheryl had a crush on me and wanted to have me for herself, but I only had you in my heart and would not budge at all. However, she threatened me with your future, and if I didn't break up with you and be together with her, she would have made you lose your reputation at school and even drop out."
I looked at Ian with wide eyes and disbelief, trying to find any hint that he was lying.
But no, he was serious.
"I knew you were eager to do well in everything. You usually got up early and were more enthusiastic about your studies than about anything else. If your future was ruined because of me, I supposed you would have been devastated."
"I had no choice but to betray you and be with Cheryl for your sake, at least I could get your peace and stability in exchange that way."
I opened my mouth but didn't know what to say.
