Chapter 49: Dinner Party with Elias
"Ms. Thompson, this is the gown the young master asked me to send to you."
Gown? What gown?
I scanned it and didn't took it, but only said to the maid, "Go get your young master."
"Er..." The two maids were a little hesitant.
What? I was not qualified to ask your young master to come over?
"It's fine. I'll call him myself." I was about to pick up the phone when they paled and went out immediately.
Not long after, Elias came.
I got angry as soon as I saw him.
"What? You don't like the style or the color of the dress? I'll ask someone to change it right away."
I sat on the sofa with my arms around my chest, smiling coldly, and said sardonically, "Every dog has its day. Now it's your turn to say that to me."
"Jacqueline."
I stood up, looking straight at him, "When exactly are the bigwigs you talked about coming? Or..." I paused, "Is it just your excuse to make me stay?"
Seeing my face full of impatience, Elias sighed, "There's a charity dinner tonight and you have to accompany me to it."
"Business or personal?" I asked.
If it was personal, I would like him to get as far away from me as possible.
"Business."
I coughed lightly.
"You won the sapphire, so you should go to the charity dinner, not to mention that one of the bigwigs I mentioned will attend this party."
I had to go with him.
But before I went, I still had to pick a fight.
"The dress you chose for me is really hard on the eyes. I never thought that a young master of a large consortium would have a poor eye."
Hearing this, Elias did not get annoyed but just told the maids to change one immediately.
"I have something to do now, and I'll come and pick you up at six o'clock in the evening."
I nodded coldly, refusing to even leave him a glance.
He seemed to have stared at me for a moment before leaving.
At 7pm, we showed up at the charity dinner on time.
Elias got out of the car first and then bent down to offer me his hand. I hesitated for a moment, but still, I put my hand on his palm.
There were so many reporters here and I couldn't give him a cold face.
"Let's go."
He grabbed my arm and placed it in the crook of his arm, looking at me affectionately.
Once, we had attended Silvan's party and we had stood side by side like this at that time.
The difference was that I had been the leading role before, but now, he was the master.
Things were not what they used to be.
The door was pushed open and Elias and I stepped in.
It like someone had pressed the pause button and it suddenly fell silent.
I suddenly became a little nervous.
Although I had attended countless charity dinners, and this one was not the largest, I got nervous because Elias was here.
Perhaps seeing that I was nervous, Elias shook my hand and whispered to reassure me, "I'm here."
I gave a very small grunt, "Don't worry about me. I'm fine."
"Elias..." A man dressed in a particularly "flamboyant" way in a blue suit approached.
I searched in my memory for information about him.
Xavier Lynn, a talented designer of international reputation, had been once on par with Tina Charleson, who was at odds with the orthodox designer Tina because of his odd personality.
But I admired him.
Although he, like Tina, designed high fashion for the high society circle, the difference was that he had his own insistence.
I had once heard a story about him.
A rich woman had wanted him to design a couture evening dress for her birthday. Nobody would have said no to money. And Xavier had quickly designed it.
He always sent the designs to his customers personally. He had happened to see the rich lady scolding a little girl in a stern manner when he had gone to send her the dress.
After he had inquired, he had found out that the little girl had been the new maid there, who had accidentally spilled the tea on the lady's shoes, which had made her furious.
Xavier had immediately turned and left with the dress in his hands.
The rich lady had been puzzled.
The next day, she had sent someone to ask him why he had left.
He had said as he yawned, "Nothing. I'm just not happy with her."
Fortunately for Xavier, the backer behind him had been powerful enough, otherwise he would have been ruined because of his temper and his offense.
I had been curious as to who the "backer" was.
Now, I seemed to have a vague idea.
It was probably Elias.
"This is Jacqueline Thompson, the president of TR Group..." Elias introduced,
"This is Jacqueline Thompson, the president of TR Group..."Elias introduced me to him, "Jacqueline, this is designer Xavier Lynn."
"Nice to meet you." I reached out my hand towards him.
Xavier looked at me with amazement, "Oh, you're Jacqueline! I finally got to meet you alive today."
I was a little confused.
Elias explained with a helpless face, "He grew up abroad and he's not good at English."
"Ms. Thompson, you are indeed beautiful and have good temperament. When I see you, I can't resist designing a few dresses for you. Oh, why aren't you wearing the gown I‘ve designed for you?"
Was the gown he had designed...
He touched his chin, "Elias said that you were relatively cool, steady, and vigorous and that you were an admirable powerful woman as well as a gentle one. Anyway... Don't you like that black dress?"
That was awkward.
It turned out I had picked on his work before.
Elias covered me up, "It was my problem. When I brought her the dress, it got dirty by accident, so I changed it."
Xavier's gaze lingered on me for a moment and then on Elias, and he smiled knowingly, "Ms. Thompson, let the three of us have a drink and chat sometime."
"Okay."
"Well, I'll leave you guys alone." He waved at us and left.
"So, Xavier was able to keep his talents and passions because you were behind him."
Elias looked at me, "It's not that I helped him. I just didn't want a truly talented person with a pure heart to end up being tainted by the world."
A person with a pure heart...
That was such a broad term.
How many people in this world were truly pure of heart like a baby?
Everyone had purposes; everyone had desires; and everyone had vanities.
Back then, I had thought Elias was a simple, candid, and even a bit silly person.
Now when I thought about it, the foolish person was obviously myself.
"Elias..." A gentle voice broke the silence between Elias and me.
I looked over and saw a woman who could not be described in words.
Tina Charleson.
As a woman, Tina was simply a paragon of femininity.
Her nobleness, aloofness, and softness were perfectly combined together, so that people simply could not take their eyes off her.
If I was a man, I might not be able to withstand a look from Tina.
The rivals in love were jealous of each other.
