Chapter 51: You Want to Get Together with Me Again?
"What are you going to do about it?" My parents asked me in unison.
What to do about it?
Actually, what could I do?
With his current wealth and status, I was like an ant trying to shake an elephant.
I could not even offend him.
Fate was so ridiculous.
"Dad, Mom, even though he is evil, at least he left us Nicholas. Let's consider him as a person who disappeared from our lives and never mention him again from now on, okay?"
Even though my parents had a lot to say, they knew I didn't want to disrupt the peace and quiet that I was in, so they let it go.
I had been alone for five years and now, I could raise Nicholas as well as I had done.
Unfortunately, things were not as they should be.
I took a step back, but someone wouldn't.
Three Months Later
I was in a meeting one afternoon when Lillie, the babysitter, called, in an awed tone, "Ms. Thompson, Nicholas is... is lost!"
The news was like a bolt from the blue.
I thought I was going to black out, "What do you mean Nicholas is lost?
"I, I took Nicholas to go shopping just now. He disappeared when I was paying. I have searched for him and asked a lot of people, but I could not find him."
I was angry and anxious, but I was in the conference room, so I gestured for them to pause and walked out myself.
"Stand still there and call the police immediately. I'll be right there. Send me your address."
Soon, I arrived at the place where Lillie was.
She looked guilty and worried, "Ms. Thompson, I'm sorry, I'm really sorry. I really didn't mean to..."
"Wait until I find Nicholas before you apologize."
"Ms. Thompson, it's true that Nicholas has disappeared in an instant. Nicholas couldn't have gone far. Would he have been..."
I was going crazy just thinking that he might have been kidnapped.
At that moment, my phone rang and I picked it up immediately. The moment I heard the voice, my whole tense nerves relaxed abruptly.
It was Nicholas' voice.
I was so anxious that I almost cried, "Nicholas, tell mommy where you are."
"Mommy, I'm in a restaurant eating parfait."
"A restaurant, parfait? Nicholas, be good and don't eat what other people give you. Tell Mommy the name of the restaurant and Mommy will come right over."
"Hey, hey, Nicholas, say something?" I was anxious as hell.
After a long time, the phone seemed to be given to another person and then a low voice sounded, "Don't you worry, your boy is safe."
My heart thumped.
The voice was Elias'.
When did he get back here from France?
That was not the point. The point was, why was he with Nicholas?
I convicted him of the crime almost instantly, "Elias, aren't you afraid I'll send you to jail for abducting my child?" I said this in a fit of anger.
Elias' voice was slightly deep, "Your child ran out into the road alone and was nearly hit by a car."
"Address." I gritted my teeth.
Elias gave me the address where they were.
I sped to the restaurant he'd told me about, and my heart that had jumped to my throat was instantly at ease when I saw Nicholas eating his parfait happily.
It was great that he was fine.
I closed my eyes, composed my emotions, and walked to them on my heels.
This time, Elias still had his back to me.
When we had first met, the first thing I had seen was his back as well.
Just because of a slight error in thought, I had helped him but had led myself to the path of perdition.
"Mommy, you're here." Nicholas saw me and waved his little arms happily, "Mommy."
Elias turned around and looked at me.
He had different emotions hidden in his eyes that were as deep as the ocean.
However, I didn't care about his emotions right now. I only cared about my child.
He was nothing more than a dispensable unfaithful man to me.
"Nicholas," I didn't even look at Elias but walked up to Nicholas, picked him up, and taught him very seriously, "Didn't I teach you that you can't just walk away with strangers or eat what strangers give you."
"Mommy, uncle is not a stranger. I was almost hit by a car just now and it was uncle who saved me."
Elias stood up, "Jacqueline, don't take it wrong."
I just treated him as air and checked Nicholas carefully, "Tell Mommy, are you hurt or not?"
"He's fine. I have just taken him to the hospital to get checked out."
"Mommy, I'm fine."
I breathed a sigh of relief and hugged Nicholas, "Nicholas, let's go home and let Grandma make you your favorite crepes, okay?"
"Yeah!"
I ignored Elias and carried Nicholas away. I had not looked at Elias from start to finish.
I didn't want to look at him.
Looking at him would only annoy me.
I put Nicholas in the child car seat, strapped him in, and then seriously told him, "Nicholas, I want to say something very serious to you. From now on, you can't walk away from me, Grandma, or the nannies when you go out with us, understand? If you get lost, you will be taken away by bad guys and Mommy won't even be able to find you. Mommy will die of sadness, so will Grandma and Grandpa. Do you want us to be heartbroken?"
Nicholas sat upright, "Mommy, I know I was wrong."
He had always been a good boy.
I kissed him on the cheek and said one last thing to him, "And if you ever run into this uncle again, make sure you stay away from him."
"Why? Uncle is very nice. He bought buy me parfait."
"In this world, there are some people who look good but are actually bad people, and we should stay away from these people, especially him."
Nicholas nodded his head as if he understood.
But the little one still sighed regrettably, "But uncle said that I look a lot like him."
My heart jolted.
Could Elias have investigated and found it out?
With his current status, it would be easy for him to dig up something about Nicholas and me.
But so what, I could simply deny it.
"Nicholas, just remember, if anyone other than Mommy, Grandma, and Grandpa want you to go with him or her, you must refuse, got it?"
"Yes." The little guy nodded his head obediently.
When we got back, I fired Lillie immediately.
She probably knew she had made a big mistake and didn't dare to explain. My mother felt a bit pity, "Lillie is quite reliable. It was probably just an accident this time."
Accident?
I would not allow any accident.
This time it was God's blessing that nothing had happened to Nicholas. Otherwise, what would I have done?
I was scared to think about it.
Even though I fired Lillie, I gave her an extra month's salary to "make up" for her.
After she left, there was still a maid, who was generally responsible for household chores but was not skilled in childcare.
I called and asked Yvette to find me a reliable nanny as soon as possible.
