Chapter 52: Hard to Win the Wife Back
"Mom, I'm not so busy with work these days and I want to take Nicholas back for a while, so that you can rest too. I'll send Nicholas over when I find a new nanny."
"Okay. You and Nicholas can spend more time together this way."
"I signed you and Dad up for a high-end tour for a month. Don't worry, it won't be tiring and you can rest whenever you want."
And so things were settled.
That evening, we finished our dinner at the villa. Then I packed Nicholas' suitcase and set off for the large flat I had bought in the city with him.
It was a large flat more than four hundred square meters in area.
I had already sold the house which I had lived in with Elias.
It had been Iggy who had persuaded me to sell that house.
She had told me that if I wanted to get out of the pain and move on, I had to leave everything behind, including the house.
After hesitating for a long time, I had finally made up my mind to sell it.
After that, I had cried all night.
But now it seemed that it was not worth the tears.
Elias was not a man at all!
When we arrived home, I found that someone was moving in next door.
But I didn't see the neighbors but only the workers.
Nicholas was curious, "Mommy, are we going to have neighbors?"
"Yeah, I guess?"
"I wonder if they have a little girl. I want to play with girls."
Looking at Nicholas' eager eyes, I couldn't help but feel amused. I squatted down and stroked his head, "Why do you want to play with girls. Don't you play with boys?"
"Boys are rude and not as cute as girls."
I was staggered.
After closing the door and tidying up, I gave Nicholas a bath and put him to bed.
"Mommy, sing me a song."
"What song do you want to listen to?"
"I want to listen to 'Twinkle Twinkle Little Star'. Oh, and 'Itsy Bitsy Spider'."
"Okay, Mommy will sing whatever you want for you."
I sang and a scene from that year came into my mind uncontrollably.
I had been lying still in bed when Elias had been singing to me in a serious manner.
I remembered when he had sung so badly that I almost couldn't have listened to him.
Why was I thinking of this heartless man again?!
I shook my head and tried to get him out of my head. Anyway, he was now the heir to the Silva Consortium and could get any woman he liked.
Oh, he got Tina already.
The following day was the weekend and I was preparing lunch for Nicholas.
While I was cooking, I realized that I was out of soy sauce.
If I went out to buy it right now, I would feel anxious about Nicholas being at home alone. If I had it delivered, it would take long and the food would get mushy in the pot.
I had no choice but to knock on the door of my neighbor across the hall.
I waited for a long while before I heard footsteps.
I prepared myself, and the moment the neighbor opened the door, I handed out the mango pie I had made this morning and politely said, "Hello..."
I was just about to speak when I saw the face of my neighbor.
The mango pie in my hand almost fell to the floor.
Why was it Elias?
The atmosphere was very strange as we looked at each other.
After a long time, I finally found my voice, "What are you doing here?"
Elias had looked expectant, but when I questioned him and seemed to unwelcome him, his eyes dimmed.
I continued aggressively, "What the hell do you want?"
"Jacqueline, do you hate me that much now? Don't you even want to see me?"
"You have a clear estimation of yourself." I finished and turned around with the mango pie in my hands.
I didn't have to borrow things. I could simply go buy it with Nicholas and redo the dishes if it was burnt.
Seeing him, my good mood of the day was gone.
"Jacqueline..." He pulled me back to stop me from leaving, and I shook it off so hard that the mango pie in my hand smashed to the ground and fell to pieces.
It was like our relationship.
It looked perfect outside but was vulnerable actually.
I turned around and looked at him coldly, "I'm only going to warn you once, stay away from me and Nicholas or don't blame me for being rude."
I turned and left. The moment I closed the door, Elias asked, "Nicholas is my son, isn't he?"
My grip on the door handle tightened and I denied it, "No."
I went back home and found Nicholas had woken up. He rubbed his eyes and asked in soft voice, "Mommy, did you just have a fight with someone?"
"No. Let's go out and have fun today, okay?"
"Yes! Great!" Nicholas was obviously happy to hear that he could go out to play.
I gave Nicholas breakfast, changed him into handsome clothes and a peaked cap, and took the elevator to the first floor with him.
To my surprise, there was a Bentley next to my parking space.
Since having a child, I had little opportunity to drive those sports cars, so I bought a SUV, which was comfortable and safe.
"Mommy, this car is cool." The little one was excited to see something new.
"Mmm." I pinched his cheek lightly, "When you grow up and make money, will you buy one for Mommy too?"
"Sure."
"My good boy."
I was just about to get in the car with Nicholas in my arms when the elevator door opened again and Elias came out.
He was wearing a white turtleneck sweater and casual pants, which was just a very simple outfit but attracted others' attention.
I admitted that, he had become more mature and attractive than five years ago. The once youthfulness faded away and he made me feel very strange like this.
Perhaps I had never really gotten to know him.
"It's that uncle!" Nicholas was very happy to see Elias.
But he had only been excited for a few seconds before he suddenly remembered something, took a step back, and hid behind my legs.
"Nicholas, hello." Elias walked up to us, bent down, and propped his hands on his knees with a gentle smile.
Nicholas glanced at me nervously but still gave him a smile, "Hello, uncle."
"Where are you going?"
"We're going to..."
"Mr. Silva, we don't seem to know each other very well, do we? Isn't it appropriate for you to pry into a married mother's whereabouts?"
His eyes looked a bit dully at me.
"Nicholas, let's go." I ignored Elias and got in the car with Nicholas in my arms.
I could still see him in the rearview mirror as the car drove out of the garage.
He stood straight in place like a tree, his gaze deep and lingering.
I took the opportunity to play and eat delicious food with Nicholas.
He was energetic and played with all his might and fell asleep as soon as he had enough.
He slept soundly in my arms.
The parking lot here was full and I had to walk about 800 meters with Nicholas in my arms.
I didn't know if it was because I had had a baby that I became much weaker. I used to run a thousand meters without gasping, but now I was already tired after walking a few steps.
Nicholas now weighed more than a dozen kilos, not to mention that he was completely relaxed when he was asleep, which made him like a heavy stone in my arms.
But I didn't want to wake him up and ask him to walk himself.
It was only a few steps away anyway, so I just gritted my teeth and kept going.
But I overestimated my own physical strength. My attention was only on Nicholas and I didn't pay attention to the rocks under my feet. I tripped and stumbled, when all I could think about Nicholas' safety.
At that very moment, a pair of hands took me steadily.
