Chapter SEVENTY FOUR.
The aroma of the sauced meat filling the air as Mrs Saint cooks while humming a popular song to herself.
Grrrr!.
The phone rings loudly.
' I will get it." She shouts from the kitchen and walks towards the land phone, her apron still hanging on her neck. She picks it up and places it on her left ear. ' Saint's mansion. How may we help?." She says then after a while she adds 'Oh okay."
' Who was that?." Paul asks curiously on seeing that the expression on her face has changed. She looks a bit worried.
' The Council called. Something about them dropping a package for us." His Mother informs.
' Why would the council drop a package for us?." He asks curiously. To him, the council calling meant trouble cause he believes that they never have anything good to say. Besides the last time they got a call like this was when his Father was to be suspended from the pack for a while due to his getting into a fight with a member of the pack.
' I don't know either." Mrs Smith responds.
' Where is this so called ‘package' then?." Paul questions and the doorbell rings just about the same minute she shrugs her shoulder.
' That should be it." She responds and heads towards the door.
' Let me." Paul volunteers, stopping her midway.
' No Son. I will deal with this myself." She responds and forces a smile before pulling the door open.
' Hi." She says with a fixed smile on her face, her sweetness being faked as well.
' I have a package for you. You just have to sign here." He informs and stretches the logbook to her.
Paul catches the glimpse of the delivery man and watches her append her signature on the book before taking the outstretched package and stepping back, pushing the door close with full force.
' What's that?." Paul asks almost immediately, his eyes on the White envelope his mom held, a red seal stamped on it.
She says nothing as she tears the paper open and pull of the letter in it. Her eyes scurries over it and her hands drop.
' What's it?." Paul asks worriedly and walks over to her to take the letter from her and weirdly she doesn't try to stop him.
His eyes run over the words in it and just like his mom, he loses his balance and lands right on the floor.
' How?. It's impossible. How can this be true? I refuse to believe." He rants on but Mrs Smith says no word.
Paul stands on his feet and rushes towards the phone, punching the numbers in. He waits impatiently as it rings.
' House of Melville. How may I help you?." The receiver on the other ends say.
' Hi, Aunt Fiona. Umm. Is Arianna home?." He stammers and awaits her response.
' Not yet. She said something about going to Aurora's." She explains then take a brief pause. ' Hope all is well, boy?." She asks.
' Yes. All is fine, aunt. I hope." He replies unsure of what he is to believe.
' Okay. Be good boy." She responds as though she knows of what is going on.
The call ends.
Paul shoves the phone back into its place and pace up and down the room first unsure of what to do next.
Should he call Aurora first? Or talk to Arianna? Or his Father?."
If it is to be his father then he knows he has a whole lot of questions to ask. He knew he needs answers and he needs them quick.
He wonders and eventually he picks up the phone and dials another number.
' Mrs Salvatore on the line." She says.
' Hi Aunt. It's Paul..Paul Smith." He responds, his surname starting to have an unexplainable weight on his lips. It is as though the name ‘Smith' has become a stranger to him in a space of hours.
' I will get your friends." She says before he can reply and put the call on hold. He waits for a brief moment, tapping his feet on the floor gently as he did. Soon the line came alive again.
' Hi asshole." It's Aurora's voice and she says jokingly, just the same way she plays.
' Hi." He replied coldly, not really in the mood for the talks.
' How have you been today? Arianna and I didn't see you all day. You good?." She asks.
' Yea, I'm fine. I need to speak with Arianna."
' Hey, calm down horse boy. You can talk to me too you know. This unusual closeness between Arianna and you is starting to get so suspicious. Should I be expecting a god baby one day?." She teases.
' Ewww, Aurora. It's nothing of such. I just really need to speak with Arianna." He replies.
' Okay." She responds and calls out Arianna's name. ' She is on her way." She informs. ' So while we wait, what does the upcoming birthday boy want for his birthday?." She asks.
He takes a minute to think about it and respond but instead nothing comes to head. For the first time in a long while he didn't know what he wants for his big day. Weirdly his big day didn't seem like a big day to him anymore.
' I don't know. I…."
His words trails off on hearing Arianna's voice.
' Hi." Arianna greets. ' Aurora said you asked of me. You good?." She adds.
He heaved a big sigh.
' Yes. I.." He pauses and clears his throat before speaking.
Here goes nothing.
He whispers in his head.
