Chapter 91
The next morning, Damein made it a duty to wake everyone up. It was going to be another long day to meet new people and talk to a new Alpha on our quest.
'What do you think?"
'Well, according to my map, our route leads us towards the west."
'Seems like it's only in the west that the major clans are located." I said as we continued our journey. I didn't know why but the little discussion I had with Laura yesterday kept popping up in my mind. I was totally restless and wanted to know if there was something I would do.
I wanted to know what she saw when she was in that car. I needed more information on Mascot. Why did he join Lucas? What was he going to gain from them? If truly Laura wasn't lying about going there to find out things for herself, then I need to know what she found out.
'What's wrong, Naomi?" Laura asked me.
I came back to reality immediately. They were some distance ahead of me because I was walking very slowly. I ran to catch up with them.
'Nothing. I was only thinking." I told them when I caught up with them.
We kept on walking even when the scorching sun was on our skin. Sweat dropped on our clothes like tears of despair and pain.
'Next time, we should get horses." Laura suggested and I totally agree with her. At least, this was the first time I actually agreed with her after the incident.
'That would have been a good idea if this pack does not accept horses."
'Why?" I asked Damein, shocked at the revelation.
'Because they believe that horses disturb the peace of the moon goddess and kill the plants that she made to feed them." Damien explained.
'So what happens when someone who's a visitor enters the land with a horse?"
'Well, the person gets beheaded."
'What?" I and Laura screamed at the same time unexpectedly but then we caught Damein laughing so hard and then we knew that he was joking.
'Stop joking around." I told him, trying to calm myself.
'Yeah. I actually thought you were serious." Laura said, leaning on a tree and took a deep breath, trying to regulate her breathing.
'But I am. They do not believe that horses were made by the moon goddess and so they banned it from their clan."
'So are you trying to tell me that we wouldn't find a single horse in the clan?"
'No, you won't."
'How do you know so much about these things?" I asked in wonder.
'Alpha-king Magnus told me everything I needed to know so I listened to him." Damein replied, putting his backpack down so he could get his bottle of water. 'We are soon running out of water and we need to refill so we don't get thirsty." Damein said and gulped down the little quantity he had.
As Damien and Laura sat down to rest a bit, I went out to look around for a moment.
'Be careful." Laura called out but I didn't say a word to her. I went down the little valley and took a few steps towards it. It was very beautiful and had huge tall trees around it. The sun even though painful to us made the flowers bloom radiant. The air was different, it was sweet and smelled like beautiful wild flowers. Then I saw a river, it flowed through the middle of the valley.
I was about to look away when I realized what I had seen. A river?
'Guys?" I screamed from where I stood while still trying to run back to them so I could reveal the good news to them. 'Guys? Come see what I found."
'What?" Damein was already up and charged forward with either sword. 'Where are they?"
'No, no. I found a river!" I screamed in excitement but got hisses as a response. 'What? Is this not good news." I turned facing Damien, then Laura.
'You scared us."
'I thought you were attacked or something." Damein sounded disappointed and Laura looked scared and it made me laugh.
'I just wanted to show you that I found a river, we can finally refill our bottles and have more too." I said, leading them to the valley where I had found the river.
'This place is so beautiful." Laura exclaimed. 'I don't think I have seen anything as beautiful as this. I'm so glad I'm on this journey."
I watched her smile as she smelled the flowers and watched the butterflies. That was the Laura I knew, always glad and always smiling. She was a beautiful little soul.
Was.
I didn't feel that way anymore. This time her smile was suspicious, her joy was suspicious, her laughter was suspicious even her tears were suspicious. I had my eyes closely on her because I didn't want a repeat of what happened before. I knew deep down that I had put myself inside that little cage of always watching her but I would prefer to be in that cage than to be cut off guard again because of her.
'Should we spend the night here?" Laura asked.
It was a very interesting question, we would have loved to spend the night in this beautiful valley but duty called and we must answer.
'We can't do that today, we can do that when we are on our way back from Moonlight pack, as for now, we are close by and we need to get there before midnight." Damien replied.
We all shock our heads in disappointment but then that's what has to be done.
'Can we at least pick out fruits we could eat, atleast?" Laura asked again and Damien gave a go ahead nod to her.
There were plenty of good looking fruits but we needed to differentiate them all so we wouldn't eat evil fruits from the forest which could cause death.
'Be careful." I said to Laura but then changed my mind and stood up. 'I'll help you."
'I knew there were different fruits but could these beautiful fruits really cause death?" Laura asked, curious.
'Of course. These are made up of different species. Some are meant for us werewolves, others for just humans and others for animals too." I explained to her as we wandered round the valley, in search of the fruits to pick.
I had a little knowledge of this because when I was little, I would always go round the Palace where wild fruits grew and pick out good ones with my mother. It was what we did together to bond after having a bad day.
'How do you know so much?" Laura asked me.
'Well, my mother taught me." I answered, still trying to not have a conversation with her.
'I wish I had a mother like yours. One that would always teach me and tell me what to do."
