Chapter 98
It was beautiful to watch the moon under our already made up tent.
'I just love the moon." Laura said. She sat very close to me. 'It's so beautiful."
'Me too. I remember when my mother used to tell me stories about the moon, the folktales and everything." I said, smiling. It's been a long time since I had bonded with my mother and I felt bad about it.
Damien had gone to put the horses away in a safe place and probably feed them too so they don't die of hunger.
I glanced at Laura and saw how unhappy she was. The truth was that Laura had never spoken to me about her mother, father or any member of her family. Most times, I have asked her in the past but she would always nod and tell me to forget the issue.
'Laura." I called her, thinking it was finally time for us to have that discussion but she didn't answer. 'Laura?" I called her again and she responded by looking at me.
'What's bothering you?' I asked her, hoping she would confide in me.
'Me?" She asked. 'I'm good." She answered her own question without waiting for my response.
'I think it's time we have that discussion." I said and nodded. I knew she understood what I was talking about when she looked away.
'I don't want to."
'Tell me. If you really consider me your friend, you will tell me." I told her, trying to make her speak.
She looked at me intently and then turned away. 'The truth is that I don't know who my parents are." She said. 'I just found myself living with a particular person who treated me like their own but I was never related to them in any way." Laura explained.
I was shocked when I heard this. Every single time, Laura had refused to talk about her parents. I had thought that they might have died in a painful way that she didn't want to remember. I had never thought that she never knew her parents.
I looked at her as she spoke of her parents and I could see the pain in her eyes. She was hurt and u had contributed to that pain every time I talked to my parents. I had been taunting her without being aware of it.
'So that's it. I have refused to talk about my family because I have none. It was a painful thing to sit but that was what she felt. She gave me a smile that was filled with pain.
'What about the people you loved?" I asked her.
'When I got older, I figured out that they weren't my real family so I had to feed myself. I still speak to them and we spend time together when we can but I simply didn't belong with them." Laura concluded.
'I'm so sorry."
'I just loved the bond between you and your mother. It makes me happy to know that mothers and daughters could still have so much bonds." She said sadly.
I didn't want her to start talking about my own mother so she wouldn't get sad but I had so many questions to ask her.
'Did you ever look for your parents?" I asked, turning to hold her hands.
'Yes, I did but I never got enough information about them so I didn't know how to find them even if I wanted to."
'Tell me what you know about them." I said, caressing her hands with mine. The moon was now as bright as ever and it made the night so beautiful.
'Well, I asked my then family and they said that all they knew was that my father was just a normal clan man and he did nothing special. My parents were captured when there was a fight in Shadowcrest.."
'That night that my father was killed?" I asked, shocked.
'Exactly. There were captured and they had found me on my bed crying so they took me in." Laura paused. 'I know that you're thinking that they have been taken to ice crest but I doubt that. I had warriors that I paid to go to Ice crest to look for them but they always come back with bad news."
'I'm so sorry about this." I said, still trying to understand what I was hearing for the first time.
'It's fine. I forgot them already." Laura lied.
'You know that's a lie. Anytime someone talks about their parents, you become gloomy. It shows that you still think about them and you still want to see them."
'I'll love to see them but there's absolutely nothing I can do about it."
'Yes, there is. You must look for them. You must try to find them. You must at least do something.."
'What if I found out that they've been dead for a long time or.." Laura kept quiet suddenly. I knew she felt like crying. She was a brave girl and would never let someone see her cry.
'"Don't talk like that. I need to give me more information about your parents so we could also look at for them I'm this journey too.``
'It's of no use. I tried to ask questions but nothing. I doubt they even remember that I exist." She paused. 'What if they don't want me?"
'You parents love you and I'm very sure they've been in search of you ever since. Don't give up on finding your parents. I'll help you, I just need you to believe that you can do this." I told her and she nodded.
'You'll help me?"
'Of course. Aren't you helping me too?" I asked her and she smiled.
'This is difficult. I'm helping because I want to help." She said and just then Damien walked in on us.
'Really." I said, then asked. 'Don't you ever get tired and feel like you might be wasting your time?" I looked at Damien too expecting to answer the question too.
'I'm doing this because I want to save Shadowcrest and because I love you and because you can't do this alone." Laura responded, laughing. Then I looked up to Damien where he stood over us.
'No, I do this because it's my duty and because you are my friend." He said coldly but the look on his face says a different thing altogether.
'So you're my friend?" I asked, in shock. It was the first time Damien was addressing someone as his friend and I was privileged to be that one person. I jumped up in happiness like someone who just won a trophy.
