Chapter 127: A Close Call.
AARON.
Helena looked between us, her bright brown eyes darkened with guilt and worry. 'I'm sorry," she whispered again. 'I didn't mean to cause any trouble. I just... I couldn't sleep."
Luna sighed, her expression softening. 'We know," she said gently. 'But you have to understand, this isn't just about you. It's about all of us. We need to stick together and stay alert. At all times."
Helena nodded, looking down again. 'I'm sorry," she repeated, her voice barely audible.
I reached out, placing a hand on her shoulder and pulling her close. 'It's okay," I said, trying to sound reassuring. 'Just stay close from now on, alright? We can't afford any more close calls."
She nodded, her shoulders sagging with exhaustion. 'I will," she promised, her voice tired. 'I'll…. I'll be more careful."
Luna gave a small smile, trying to lighten the mood. 'Good. Because the last thing we need is another wolf fight on our hands."
The tension still thrummed in my veins, but I smiled at her words. 'Yeah, no more fights. Not tonight, at least."
Helena managed a small smile, but I could see she was still shaken. 'I think I'll go to my tent now," she said softly. 'I need some rest."
Luna nodded. 'Get some sleep," she encouraged. 'We'll figure things out in the morning."
She walked away, and I watched her, a knot of worry tightening in my chest. She was putting on a brave face, but I could see how scared she'd been. I wanted to go after her, to tell her it was alright, that I wouldn't let anything happen to her. But she needed rest, and I needed to talk to Luna.
Once Helena was out of earshot, Luna turned to me, her expression serious. 'We have a problem," she said quietly.
I nodded. 'I know. They know we're here. They'll be on the lookout now."
Luna sighed. 'They won't make it easy for us. We can't afford to slip up again."
I clenched my jaw, frustration boiling inside me. 'We need to be more careful," I said. 'We can't let them catch us off guard like that."
Luna nodded in agreement. 'We'll come up with a plan," she said, her voice determined. 'We always do."
I gave a small nod, trying to push down the anger still simmering inside me. 'Yeah," I agreed. 'We always do."
We settled down for the night, I couldn't help but glance towards Helena's tent one last time. I could still see her face, pale with fear, and it made my heart ache. I knew we were in for a rough ride, but I also knew one thing for sure—I wasn't going to let those wolves get to her. Not again.
The fire crackled, sending small bursts of sparks into the cold night air. I stood near the edge of the camp, my eyes scanning the dark forest. The adrenaline from earlier was still coursing through me, and my muscles were tight with a mix of anger and lingering fear. What were those wolves thinking? They knew Helena wasn't one of their pack, but they still came for her. They crossed a line. The most infuriating part was probably because she didn't pose a threat to them.
The sight of Helena's pale face when I rescued her, shaking and scared, was burned into my memory. I was so close to losing her, and the thought made my blood boil. How dare they? How dare they come so close, knowing the risk? I had half a mind to confront those wolves directly, to show them just how far we were willing to go to protect what was ours.
Luna approached me, her expression a mix of worry and exhaustion. 'Aaron," she began softly, but I cut her off before she could say more.
'Those elders," I growled, my voice barely concealing my frustration. 'They had the nerve to send their pack out here when they knew damn well we were nearby. It's like they're daring us to challenge them. How far are they willing to push us?"
'They sensed Helena wasn't one of theirs," Luna said, her voice calm but edged with tension. 'Even with the potion masking her human scent, they could tell she wasn't one of them. I might need to work on that. But to attack her… that was reckless."
'Reckless?" I echoed, my anger flaring. 'That was more than reckless, Luna. It was a provocation. They wanted to test us, see how far they could go. And now Helena could have…"
I trailed off, the image of Helena surrounded by those wolves flashing in my mind. I saw her frightened eyes, the way she tried to fend them off. If I hadn't arrived when I did, the situation could have turned catastrophic. I shook my head, trying to push the grim thoughts aside. No, I needed to stay focused. She was safe now, but the incident would forever be imprinted into my mind.
Luna stepped closer, her eyes softening as she looked at me. 'She's okay, Aaron. You saved her. That's what matters."
'For now," I said, my voice laced with frustration. 'But our cover is blown. They'll be prepared for us next time."
Luna's face was illuminated by the firelight, her features set in a determined expression. 'And that's exactly what they wanted. To shake us up, to make us doubt our purpose."
'Well, they got what they wanted," I said, kicking a stone near my foot. It skidded across the dirt and disappeared into the darkness. 'But this isn't over. Not by a long shot."
Luna crossed her arms, her gaze never leaving mine. 'We need to regroup and reassess. If they know we're here, we have to be smarter about our next move."
I glanced over at Helena's tent, a tight knot forming in my chest. I could hear her moving around inside, trying to calm herself after the chaos. I wanted to go to her, to reassure her, but I wasn't sure what to say. How could I make her feel safe when I wasn't even sure we were safe?
Luna followed my gaze, her expression shifting to one of concern. 'She's tough, you know. Tougher than most humans I've met. She's trying her best to fit into our world."
'She shouldn't have to," I muttered. 'This isn't her fight. She's only here because of us, because of me." I felt a pang of guilt. Helena had been dragged into this world, into this danger, all because of our connection. A connection that was growing stronger, more undeniable by the day.
Luna gave me a small, understanding smile. 'She chose this, Aaron. She chose to come with us. You can't take all the blame."
'I know," I said, though her words did little to ease the guilt gnawing at me. 'But I can't stand the thought of anything happening to her."
Luna placed a hand on my arm, her touch grounding. 'We'll keep her safe. Together. We have to stick together, especially now."
I looked at Luna, my anger cooling into a steely determination. 'Yeah, we will."
