Chapter 49: Goblins Again!
HELENA.
The bastard was unfazed, like he didn't just run 250 meters twice. Stupid werewolf abilities.
'I didn't cheat, Helena. I let you think you could win, and did the opposite. It's called reverse psychology."
I snorted
'That's not what reverse psychology is."
'...."
'Well, I still get your bread, and mine." He walked happily, carrying both bags of bread.
We arrived at the farmhouse, and met Luna at the porch, waiting. Guilt pierced into me.
'Did you two plan to give me a headache? Why aren't you picking up your phones?" She scolded the moment we got close enough to hear her.
'I'm sorry Luna. Someone here thought it'd be a good idea to have a race on the road." I said, glaring at Aaron.
His expression, '..."
I giggled inwardly.
'Oh really? Aaron, is the young woman correct?" Luna asked, crossing her arms like she was his mother.
'Of course not. She's the one who…." His voice trailed off, and realization dawned on him. 'You tricked me."
This time, I giggled outwardly. 'Sure I did."
He shrugged. 'No matter. I'll still eat your bread."
'Bread?" Luna snapped her head at both of us. Almost immediately, she lunged forward and grabbed both paper bags from Aaron. She tore one first, savoring the scent before devouring it in one bite. She spat it out a second later.
'Seriously Aaron? Chocolate? Oh my." She threw the bag to him, and dashed into the house. I gave Aaron a look, still dazed.
'Some werewolves are allergic. I'm not." He shrugged.
'My goodness. Why didn't you stop her?" I suddenly felt guilty. And mad at him.
'Why did you trick me?" He folded his arms.
'It was a bet, not a trick."
'You literally admitted it was a trick."
'I.."
A loud shriek interrupted our banter, and I went pale. I recognized the faint smell of sulfur. The goblins were back.
Aaron picked me up before I could think, and ran into the house. Dropping me in the living room, he sped upstairs and down, locking every window and placing a charm on every door. Luna had made the charm since the last time they tried to break in.
Luna appeared from her room, and pulled me in, locking it. Before that, she told Aaron, 'Shut off all the lights. If they can't see, they can't smell."
Aaron nodded, and went to do as he was told.
I sat down on Luna's bed, rubbing my clammy palms. The room was dimly lit, as always. Luna handed me a small bottle, and motioned for me to stay quiet. Then, she walked into the bathroom. I wanted to ask about Aaron. He was facing those things. Alone. I wanted to go out and help him, but I couldn't. I felt helpless.
I hated feeling like this. It reminded me of the time my parents died. I had no one. Literally no one. Anytime I moved on the streets I felt like I was constantly being targeted. Probably that was why I needed to return to Henley.
Even here it wasn't safe anymore.
Then, I heard a tiny squeak under the bed. I froze, my pulse spiking immediately. Did they get in here? I sucked in a deep breath. Luna said not to move.
I wouldn't move. Sweat trickled down my forehead.
AARON.
They were everywhere.
In greater numbers than before too. I was furious the last time they showed up mostly because they had hurt Helena, but now, I didn't even know what to do about the little things.
Some of them had weapons, but they were nothing compared to the barricades. Luna's charms had succeeded in keeping a good number of them out of the house, but the older and stronger ones found a way in.
I slowly shifted forms, careful not to destroy anything in the house. Helena spent a lot trying to fix the damage these idiots had caused earlier, and quite frankly, no one wanted a repeat of that situation. I hoped she was safe with Luna.
I shut my eyes, preparing myself to fight the goblins. Sooner or later, this had to stop.
One of them came flying from the kitchen, and I tore up its head in one swift movement. Another one came, and I jammed its head with my elbow. I ripped and tore flesh, even in the dark.
Having night vision was such a flex. Within minutes, over fifty of them were sprawled on the floor, nothing but empty vessels of flesh and blood. I had killed so many, but they were still coming.
I was losing strength. Then, I spotted Luna, moving stealthily in the dark. I howled lowly, and she howled in response. She held three bottles in her hands and motion for me to stay still. I obliged and froze in my position.
She took a step towards the living room door where three of the goblins were trying to materialize. These bastards had mastered the art of magic. I wasn't surprised, they were sent by the elders after all. Luna muttered some words incoherently and tossed one of the bottles in the midst of the three goblins.
The contents of the bottle splashed on them and they shrieked, screaming loudly. The whole house rumbled. Suddenly, my ears perked up. I heard a familiar shivering. Helena. 'Luna, I'm going to go check on her." I said to Luna. She nodded, facing the entrances and exits.
The goblins had begun to retreat, cursing us in their own language. They probably realized that one of us could use magic as well. They would be back, I knew, but not for a while.
I morphed back into my human form, putting on my emergency pair of pants. I was yet to find out why our clothes disappeared each time we morphed. The power was restored to the house and the golden bulbs shone brightly.
I headed to Luna's room.
HELENA.
I heard a whisper.
A slight touch on my feet. I flinched. 'Luna?" I whispered. The light in her room had gone completely out, and my fear increased. I hugged my knees, sitting as far away from the door as possible. There was a loud shriek from behind me. I jumped, and yelled as loud as I could. They were outside Luna's window.
It was dark, I couldn't see anything. The only thing in my hand was the bottle Luna had handed me, and I couldn't even find her. The noise from outside the door stopped abruptly, and so did the screeching from Luna's window. I trembled, whimpering slightly.
If those things found a way in…
A small knock startled me out of my thoughts. The door knob turned. I readied the bottle.
'Helena? Are you okay?"
