Chapter 87: Beautiful Moments
HELENA.
A perfect understatement when describing the word fun with werewolves, was when you were actually having fun with them.
These two took the word to the extreme.
Initially, we planned a sleepathon after Luna's successful heist, but after a few minutes of drifting, she said she wasn't…feeling it.
So, we had a campfire outside instead. Luna prepared the fire, I set up the tents, and Aaron, as usual, made the snacks we would eat while telling spooky night time stories. It was like in a fairytale, except I was the main character.
I walked inside the house, sniffing the scent of whatever it was that wolf was cooking. My heart went giddy, and I ran towards the kitchen. I stood at the door, watching him work effortlessly.
'Little wolf, didn't they tell you that sneaking up on others is a bad habit?" He drawled, not taking his eyes off the pan. Something about that voice…I would never get tired of hearing it.
'But I wasn't sneaking, I was merely….admiring." I walked into the kitchen, standing beside him. He smirked, carefully dropping the spatula, and pulling me in by the waist.
'Admiring what exactly?" His eyes glowed, and my heart fluttered.
'This lovely piece of art in front of me." I whispered.
He creased his brows. 'I'm not art. I'm a wolf. A big, powerful, strong wolf. Not art." He shook his head like a baby, and I laughed.
'You know what I mean." I said, smacking his chest.
'Of course I do." He leaned in to kiss my forehead, before suddenly pulling away and focusing his attention on the stove.
I knew the reason for his actions a few seconds later, when Luna walked into the kitchen with Tyrus, all smiles. 'What's cooking chef boy?" She asked, poking Aaron with her finger. He glared at her sharply, and she laughed.
'Oh come on. It's a nice name. Besides, aren't you the chef here?" She fetched a glass of water from the kitchen sink, and placed it in front of Tyrus. The little fella dunked her head inside almost immediately, suctioning like a vacuum cleaner.
'Find a better name. Period."
'You're such a grouch." She folded her arms and walked away, swaying her hips dramatically. Tyrus took her head out of the cup of water, hugged it in her arms, and floated out of the kitchen, mirroring Luna's movements.
She was so cute.
'Do you ever feel grateful for having Luna in your life?" I asked Aaron, cleaning the splashes of water on the counter. I hadn't noticed he pulled out something from the oven. He placed a tray of fresh lasagna on the counter, and the steam made me flinch back a bit.
'I am so sorry. Are you okay? Did the steam get into your eyes?" He checked everywhere from my head to my toes, with a worried expression. I laughed.
'I'm fine. Just give me a heads up next time. That looks delicious by the way." I pointed at the tray in front of me. He smiled, parading that proud grin.
'I am such a good chef aren't I? What were you saying about Luna?" He walked back to the stove, and I realized he was deep frying chicken. This would be one feast filled night.
'I said, do you ever feel grateful for having her in your life? She seems complicated, like someone who has gone through a lot of pain and mastered the art of hiding and going through it. At the same time, she's a very sweet soul."
Aaron turned around, sighing. 'That's because she has."
'But you can't just tell from a glance. Luna is…different. I would hate to see her go." I loved her energy, her protectiveness, her control. It pained me to know she would leave me eventually.
They might both leave me.
I hadn't had any more attacks from the goblins, and even though I was happy about that, I knew something big was coming. I felt it in the back of my head like a creepy lingering feeling that never left.
Aaron must have seen into my thoughts, because he dropped the pan and turned off the stove, walking towards me with a softened expression.
'We can't always control who comes and goes out of our lives. But if both parties decide that they want to stay with each other, nothing's gonna change that. Okay?"
Tears had welled up in my eyes, and I tried blinking them back. Aaron hugged me tightly, resting his chin on top of my head. He released me after a few moments, and returned to the stove.
I walked outside to meet Luna, who was playing with Tyrus over the fire.
'Hey Helena! What's going on?" She asked as I prepared the ground for me to sit.
'With what?" I laughed.
'You, and that stubborn wolf in there." She pointed dramatically. Her expression flickered for a while, and then turned serious.
I bit my lip, wondering if I should tell her about the kiss or pretend like nothing happened. I didn't even know where I stood with Aaron.
'You know, when I first saw you.." her voice interrupted my indecision. '.. I thought, this woman is really beautiful. And like I'd predicted, Aaron was stunned by your beauty as well. But as they say, beauty isn't everything. You're an amazing person Helena, and despite all you've been through, you still keep your kind hearted nature. It's rare to see humans like that. And I think that's what Aaron fell for."
I was speechless.
'Luna, that was beautiful." I whispered, trying to get a hold of myself. I wiped my tears with the back of my hand and she moved closer to me, giving me a big, long hug.
'What did I miss?" Aaron interrupted, carrying a large tray with at least courses of food. My stomach rumbled.
'We were planning a prank war against your sorry ass. The hug was a way of concluding our plans." Luna said, tossing him a piece of burnt wood. He pretended to stagger with the platter, and I laughed.
'If the tray falls, we can always eat it off the ground." He shrugged, before sitting on the floor and setting the tray in front of the fire.
'Animal." Luna remarked.
'That makes two of us." He retorted.
She glared at him.
He glared at her.
The three of us burst into laughter simultaneously.
'You two never cease to amaze me. I thought the days of bickering like siblings were over." I said, trying to calm the rage going on in my lungs.
'Me? Get tired of picking on Aaron? Oh hell nah. I think that'll happen the day elephants fly." She snorted.
'Me? Get tired of not caring? Oh hell nah. I think that'll happen the day giraffes fly." Aaron echoed, in a silly little Luna voice.
'You two gotta stop." I was on the verge of crying. 'Please…please let me catch my breath." It was so bad I started coughing. Although I felt like it was unrelated.
'Alright alright sorry." Luna handed me a glass of water, and Aaron rubbed my back. 'Better now?" He asked.
'Yeah, thanks."
An odd silence followed.
