Chapter 41: You Hurt Him.
AARON
I walked back towards the house, hearing faint sounds. Luna walked out, putting on a fresh scent of clothes.
'So?"
'Caleb's here. With his aunt. I feel like she's his mom anyways." She shrugged. 'They seem pretty cool. Here's some pants. Morph back so you don't scare them." She tossed me a pair of brown loose pants. I frowned at her.
'Get over your obsession with Helena. It won't do you any good. You know you're gonna return sooner or later."
'Not if I can help it." I morphed back, slipping into the brown pants. I smoothed down my hair, and exhaled. Caleb's image flashed in my head again, and fresh anger built.
'What if they come here? What can you possibly do to defend yourself?" She asked, crossing her arms.
'I'll fight." I said through gritted teeth. I will.
Luna laughed lightly.
'You've forgotten that Theodore was almost an elder. Can you even beat him? If the elders decide to rain hell on us…", her voice trailed off, but the aftermath hung heavy in the air.
The air tasted stale, like the taste of regret. I sighed, drowning in melancholy before that was interrupted by loud chatter coming from the house.
'Oh dear, we're so sorry we can't stay long. I need to get home and work on a few things. I promise we'll drop by one day." I heard a feminine voice. It was a little elderly, and I guessed it was the aunt.
'Let's go aunt. Even I have things to get to." Caleb said.
They approached the door, and I stood put, leaning on one of the pillars that stood in front of the porch. The haul of meat was beside the porch, safely hidden.
'It was nice seeing you, Georgina. And I'm sorry for taking your flask. It totally slipped my mind." Helena said as they walked out.
She caught sight of me and stiffened, before turning back to Georgina.
Caleb followed soon after, with Veronica tailing behind him. She glared daggers into his back. Another reason I liked her. We both hated the same people. I think my reason for hating Caleb was the fact that he had someone like Helena and treated her poorly, but every time Veronica talks about him it's like their enmity ran deeper.
Helena didn't speak about it either.
They walked down from the porch, and Georgina was eager to get into the car. Maybe she was tired.
'It was nice to see you, Helena. Not to mention coming into your house." I heard Caleb speak. I moved forward, towards them.
'It's not gonna happen often. So consider it your last time." Helena tried moving away, but he blocked her.
Caleb sighed.
'Helena. I truly am sorry. I want to make you see that."
'I don't want to see that. What can't you understand? I already forgave you a long time ago. That should be enough for you."
'But it's not." He moved closer to her. Helena took a step back, and he took another step forward.
I stepped in between them.
'I'm sure the woman has made her point clear. You can go." I said, crossing my arms.
HELENA
'I didn't see her complain. Mind your business." Caleb retorted.
'And who is whose business here? You're the intruder." Aaron pointed.
This was getting bad. If both of them fought here, Aaron would murder him without a second thought. There was Georgina to deal with too. She didn't seem too perturbed by Aaron's presence, and I liked it that way. She'd ask me way too many questions. Questions I wasn't ready to answer.
Aaron stepped a bit closer to Caleb, his green eyes glowing under the moonlight. Caleb stood his ground, and just like that, they were in a glare off.
'I find it funny, you know, always poking your nose in our business. Who are you?" Caleb asked, his fingers clenching into fists. That was probably a bad question. The veins in Aaron's temple pulsed violently.
'You wanna know who I am so badly? Let's see. Easy way, or hard way?" He said, cracking his knuckles.
'Hard way. Gladly." Caleb replied.
I stepped in between them.
'You two better stop this nonsense now!! What is wrong with both of you? Caleb, leave. Your job here is done. Aaron, get it together. You're not my boyfriend, and I'd appreciate it if you stay out of my conversations." I said all in one breathe.
Veronica gasped in shock from behind us, but only I could hear it. Aaron glanced sharply at me, his eyes flickering with emotion before settling into a cold hardiness. I sucked in a breathe. Maybe I was a bit harsh, but he wasn't my boyfriend. We might have had a few sparks, but that was it.
Caleb chuckled. 'So you're not her boyfriend. Funny as fuck."
Aaron clenched his teeth, but unclenched them immediately after. He placed his fists into his pocket, slowly backed away, and walked back towards the house. That singular movement alone made my chest hurt. I stared at his figure until it was out of sight.
'I'll head home now, Helena. We'll talk later." Caleb said, walking back to the car. I could see Georgina peering at us from the side mirror. I'm definitely going to answer a lot of questions tomorrow. Gosh.
The night had been ruined slightly, but we had a boatload of meat outside. It had to be attended to. I walked back into the house, under Veronica's judging stare.
'What?" I snapped.
'You didn't have to be so harsh. He stood up for you." She scolded, turning away from me.
I sighed in frustration. I was just getting worked up about the both of them. 'So you think I said too much?"
'I know you said too much. He hasn't spoken a word since. I think you hurt him."
'I just said the truth, Vee. I.."
'The truth hurts. I guess. And I know you like him. That was a little overboard." Veronica never sounded serious, and when she did, she meant what she said. My chest hurt even more.
