Chapter 44: I Wanna go Back
HELENA
I was almost yelling.
'Helena, calm down." He touched my arm. His eyes were heavy with emotion, and my heart raced.
'I'm supposed to go back home and take over as pack leader. I don't want to. It's not for me. I'm no leader. I..I wanna stay here, with you." His gaze pierced through my pupils. I could hear the painful sound of my heart, but I didn't want it to stop.
I looked away.
'Aaron, it's your duty. You can't ignore all your people because you want to stay here." I swallowed. Even if I wanted him to.
He sighed, but didn't say anything else.
A soft knock on the door. 'Helena? Vee, she's awake." Luna peeked through the small opening in the door.
Vee wheeled into the room a few moments later. She glared at Aaron, but softened her expression as she stared at me.
'I'll leave now." He muttered, walking out.
'Vee…" I strained my neck.
'The poison should wear off in a few hours. I managed to get most of it out, but the rest in your body would keep you here for a while." Luna voiced. 'Are you good?"
I nodded.
'Perfect. Don't go touching creatures when you're not sure what they are." She said softly.
'How was she supposed to know?" Vee retorted, glaring at her.
Luna glanced at her, but didn't reply. 'Avoid touching them." She warned lastly, before exiting, leaving just me and Vee alone.
'You didn't have to say that." I scolded.
'I had to. Look at you. You're stuck to the bed. If you had told me he had a position to fill in back at home, I'd never let him stay here. It puts all of us at so much risk." She had a deep frown on her face.
I understood what she meant, but…
‘no buts.'
'I wish they would just leave him alone." I muttered.
'Now the both of you aren't gonna get married."
'Veronica! Who said anything about getting married?" I chuckled, slapping her thigh.
'With all the slow burn? I have eyes Miss." she laughed. Her expression turned serious, then concerned.
'Are you actually good Lenny?" She rubbed her palm on my arm.
'Yes. I'm just a little tired of all the drama."
'I can handle Caleb you know, just give me time to regain my leg movement."
'There won't be any need for that." I stared at the foot of my bed.
'I'm just saying." She raised her hands in surrender. 'I wanted to talk to you about something though."
'Yeah?"
'I got a call last weekend." She started. 'You guys weren't at home, and I was bored. So I went online for any context concerning my research."
I strained my head. 'The cancer cure?"
She nodded. 'And?"
'They've not been able to get their hands on it, but I can't help but feel like something is wrong." She had a valid point. They hadn't tried to contact her for almost two months now.
'Your apartment, is it secure?" My mind was racing.
'Yes, it is. I locked it properly before driving out that night. My experiments are still in the basement."
'Wanna go check it out?" I offered. If we could bring them back here, it'd probably be safer.
'I don't think that's much of a good idea. What if they see me going back?"
'I'll do it then."
'And they might come after you."
I groaned. 'So what do you propose we do then?"
She sighed.
'I'll go. Alone."
'That's not happening. Luna will go with you."
'I'm not going anywhere with a werewolf. What if goblins attack me too? Or even worse, bloodhounds? My face is too pretty."
I stared at her. 'Who's the stubborn one again?"
'It's always been me, Helena." She snorted, and we both burst into laughter.
'You've done some crazy things, but I'm proud of you." I grabbed her chin, shaking it playfully.
She smiled.
'I'm sorry you have to look after me. I know I'm a nuisance." She feigned remorse.
'The nuisance is gladly accepted by an equal nuisance." I smiled, and we both giggled.
'I wanna go back." She blurted.
'What do you mean?"
'I wanna go back home, Helena. You've done enough for me." Her eyes were lidded with unshed tears.
'Vee, you have three months left to stay. You don't have to fight something you have no idea how to handle." I tugged on her arm.
I motioned my arms and she helped me sit up. I could start to feel my toes, and I wiggled them a bit. 'Stay here."
She directed her gaze towards my arm, then my face. Was she afraid of something?
'No, Lenny. I gotta leave."
'I still don't get why you need to return so quickly." I grumbled. 'At least wait until you can walk properly. With the cane."
She nodded, and hugged me.
'I guess you can't go to work today."
'Meh." It's probably for the best. I wasn't ready to face Georgina anyways.
'Meh." She concurred. 'Aaron's making breakfast. You should come."
I could already smell the faint aroma of sizzling bacon. My mouth watered. It was around 10am now, and I'd definitely be missing work.
'I can't move you nitwit."
She giggled again, and sped out of the room.
Moments later, Aaron showed up, with a tray in his hands. Bacon and eggs, pancakes and syrup, and two glasses of orange juice.
I stared at him in confusion. I was hungry, not ‘that' hungry. He pulled out a small table, and set it on the bed, in front of me. Then, he placed the trays on top, adjusting the height of the bed table until I could just reach it with my hands. I could use them now.
'Not my most perfect definition of breakfast in bed, but this smells delicious." I said, sniffing the bacon.
'Doesn't get any better than this." He smiled, and grabbed the plate of pancakes. He stabbed his fork into one of them, and brought it to his mouth.
'I thought those were mine." I pouted. The fork stopped halfway, and turned towards me instead.
'Why don't you eat it then? I'll make some more for myself."
